Hi Guys,
How about in a future patch how about adding a button/icon which will transmit your position to your allies or corp..not necessary in local; or maybe player defined excluding local. In real life as a naval officer if we ever got in hot situation we could transmit a simple sos which alerted our allies of our exact pos. This enabled help to get to u if it was available quickly. On eve when you've just been jumped your quite busy trying to fight your way out of a situation or escape often not having the time to type a msg in channel.I would find this very useful... a simple SOS button/icon or maybe even have it as a module.
Would be interested to hear your thoughts

I can't see anything that would be wrong with this, it wouldn't be overpowered or anything. The SOS could appear in Alliance or Corp chat or something so people actually see it.

Maybe you could just right-click the button and choose which channel (or channels) you want the SOS to go into by default.

Thinking through the concept further if you had it as 'Radio Operator' skill with an associated module... the higher the skill the more information gets transmitted.

that complexity is hardly worth it. its just an automatic radio message to your corp and allience if you have one, that says "im here and under attack, help me".
it takes no special skills to holler for help at the top of your lungs, and your ships standard com system is clearly capable of communicating with your corp.
- PvPers always say "GB2WoW". the message is that EVE is hard, and people just need to deal with it. wasn't it funny how when nano's started making it hard for *them*, that all went out the window? |

I like the idea.
In fleet ops people are always adviced to tripple xxx in fleet channel.
But often an engaged scout is quite busy and should additinally type in his current location and the amount of ships he is concfronted with.
It would be neat to have a XXX / SOS button for fleet ops (personally i prefer it on fleet scale not on ally / corp scale). Afterwards a easy to recognize icon should appear with his current location so its easy to set the autopilot to reach him.
And yes, when the engaged buy has the new skill maxed, everyone inside the fleet should be able to see a copy of his overview when he sent the SOS signal. Just some kind of overview information copy when someone of his fleet clicks on the alert symbol.

This has some similarity to the idea of needing to 'call the cops' if you want concord to show up quickly.

Edited by: Joe Starbreaker on 05/09/2008 17:22:29 I would prefer if it created a beacon on the Overview in the local system. That'd be more like a real distress signal -- everybody can hear it, but you don't know who will respond.
In lowsec if you're being attacked by pirates, you might just summon more pirates, but on the other hand you might find somebody who will save you, or at least kill the pirates after killing you. This makes the whole "anti-pirate" profession more meaningful, as they can roam around lowsec looking for distress signals, and might actually be able to catch pirates in the act (instead of trying to engage pirates by springing their well-laid traps at stargates).
In high-sec the distress signal may not let others get involved, but it at least lets everybody know where there's a fight to watch. And you never know, somebody might come along with a remote rep and give you some aid. In fact, it'd be a fun way to get involved in other people's PVP in highsec - bring a battleship with some remote rep drones to share aggro.

Yes but if you do summon pirates who's to know the second set of pirates won't feel the first set is worth blowing out of the stars? Pirates have money and implants too, they can be ransomed.
I like the idea of a general SOS |

Greetings,
As someone who has, in RL, had to call in that naval distress, I have to agree that this actually makes a lot of sense.
A number of caveats I would place on it though;
- Does not work in high sec. My reason for this is simple, too many chances for new players to make mistakes with it and cause a lot of mischief.
- Anyone in low sec or 0.0 can call it in at any given time. This way it can be used for both good and bad.
- Is not tied in, in any way, to Concord or NPC factions. This feature should only be used as a player to player tool. NO player to NPCs
- Must show local conditions. When someone hits the button, it should show how many ships, what types of ships and which ones are hostile, but not faction, standing, or pilot info.
As someone posted previously, yes, it should be a beacon that anyone can warp to.

I could see this being used and abused in a few ways...
1) Player in distress activates beacon. Beacon is visible to anyone in range (not just Group/Corp) in case any "good samaritans" would be out and about. Good samaritan comes to the rescue, and the peasants rejoice.
2) Player in distress activates beacon. Beacon is visible to anyone in range. Pirate reinforcements lock onto signal, and "finish the job". Player wakes up in a new Med Clone.
3) Player in distress... Good samaritan arrives... Pirates arrive as well... fleet battle ensues.
4) PIRATE player NOT in distress... Good samaritan arrives... Samaritan wiped out by waiting Pirate fleet.
5) Player in distress... no one arrives, fearing a set up of some form... player dies anyways.
--- Don't take my ranting personally. I may just be arguing the topic, unless you're saying something stupid, and then I mean every word. "Players don't want Variety. They want THE BEST" |

Yeah, that's why it's good! If it were just a "save-me" button only visible to corpmates or Concord, it'd be no fun at all.

This is why it's a good idea [the beacon thingy]. It helps both Carebears and Pirates, about equally.
I would add maybe 1 caveat: You can only launch a distress beacon (like launching a jet-can) if you are either being targeted/aggressed/shot at [delete as needed] by a player ship, or have a PvP aggro timer counting down (GCC or Aggro). שששששששששששששששSigשששששששששששששש The magic behind Minmatar ships is the fact that there is only one type of Minmatar ship. The only variation is when they decide to stop building it. |

this could be fun but it needs to show up in selected channels not be tied to fleet because there are lots of ways already to get response from fleet. but if you have other allies around they should be able to join and there should be a beacon in system so anyone in system can show up. the tie to corp and alliance channels will let them know who is in trouble but anyone else would be able to come join the fun. i do not think it should be tied to pvp because if you get in a mission that you are not ready for you should be able to get someone to help. i don't know how much information would be appropriate for this, i could see there being a rank 3 skill that effects how much information if transmitted. each level allows message to be linked in an additional channel(starts with one and lvl1) lvl1 allows you to put beacon in system, lvl2 tells who is aggressing(name of pilot that fired first) lvl3 also gives number of aggressors, lvl4 changes from name of aggressor to list of aggressors or name of mission, lvl5 gives full ship list that is involved

A way to link your position in a chat window would be kinda cool. Kinda like the "location" link in a mission window. Being able to choose which chat to link it in would allow each player to choose who sees it.

I'm thinking that the data needed to display your attackers names and ships could give peoples clients a few problems, especially if they are lagging.
More so, I would say this could be something along the lines of a distress call like this:
- Specific Type: Local, Corperate or Alliance - Local Distress Call: Along the lines of "A distress call has been detected somewhere near <nearest astrological location>" - Local calls are played in Local, not providing an identity, simply a blank SoS with the name of where it is (a belt, planet, moon etc). - Local calls cannot be used in High Security space.
- Corperate Distress Call: "<Person> has sent out a distress call in the <system+link> system, near <nearest astrogolocal location+ precise location link>" - Corperate calls play in the Corp channel, and give links to your precise location within that system with a link to where that call was made, allowing you to be quickly found even if not in fleet.
- Alliance Distress Call: "<Person> has sent out a distress call in the <system+link system>, somewhere near <nearest astrological location> - Alliance calls are played in the Alliance channel, and give more information than a General call, though dont provide a precise location.
- Can only be repeated once every 60 seconds (all types) - Can be blocked by a filter, or wont show from people who are b-listed. - The use of a distress call generates an animation like a giant wave that eminates from the ship. Additionally, ships firing on that ship or that are engaged with it will be notified in their local channel. - - - - - - - - - What could possibly make me walk into your gate camp to get to low sec, unless my Retriever has a doomsday device on it...

It should be an unmissable feature. The buttons should be placed just above the ship status indicators, and should flash when you come under attack. ------------------

A very simple way to implement this would be to have an SOS script that is executed when you type /sos. That's not very hard to type even in heat of battle.

If it was fitted as a module it could have an associated skill with it ..the higher the skill the more information that's gets transmitted and like wise an radio jamming skill with associated module..As peeps have pointed out could be very interesting in pirate engagements..

and you dont think there is any other module you would prefer fitting there instead? like ewar, damage mods or neuts?
better to have such a thing in the ship itself. like the onboard scanner

The SOS should always go out on local. The others could be added via skills, but if someone pushes the SOS button, it should always go to local, unless the ship is in high sec of course.
