Seriously, This is the only game I have played that I can't sit here for a few hours without my eyes hurting bad. To the point where I can't play nearly as much as I should be able too.
I think I've narrowed it down to a few variables mainly with regards to the text. I have tried all the text settings and so far the best one is 12 point expanded font. But the other major problem is, I NEED black text. I have inverted vision and white text on black backgrounds kills my eye sight. If its pure white text on pure black background, I can't even look at it without major pain.
I have tried adjusting the color schemes with limited success. If I lighten up everything so the contrast between the text and everything else isn't too high its bearable.
The main point though, the text in eve is not acceptable. Not to mention it would be a decent benefit to the game for players to be able to have limited ability to mod their UIs. Some players could have PVP type layouts, others trade oriented layouts.
Seriously though, I need black text, or any other color between. Imagin you got a very nice 23 inch LCD screen ($1000 ticket type), and you have over 1600x1200 resolution (native res required). Now a 12 point font might be good in some cases but for a chat window with hundreds of lines per hour going by. Without the ability to change the font boldness or style. Now I know I can increase size, but that doesn't help. It just makes an already crappy font larger and more "White"...

You got ripped off.. i paid a little under $400 for each 24" Full HD 10000:1 1900x1200 Monitor i own, if you really spent 1000+ on a 23".. try to get a refund fast,
on another note.. yes i would love to see the fonts/text updated in the game so they dont turn into blurry white characters that really are a pain to the eyes at times.

In the ESC menu there is options to change the colors of your windows. What happens if you change them to white? I havent tried but maybe the text turns black?

I agree on the small font. It should have more variations in size or it should be changed to a completely other one.

Agree the text should be more customizable.
And while we are at it, why not be able to move the module hud around, like everything else these days. Not everyone have wide screen, and therefore have trouble with the width of eight modules and a window on the right(fx. drones/scanner).

Edited by: Backdaft on 12/09/2008 18:44:34 I sympathize with you. For me the eyestrain is in those "quasar" space backgrounds that make up EVERY SINGLE SYSTEM. There was a bug awhile back where the space background wouldn't load (I think I was blowing out my cache ie graphics mem on my card) and it was pure bliss except for warp tunnel effects being slighly nauseating. But now the screen just turns pure white with a huge drop in framerate and I'm forced to relog all clients.
The biggest problem is trying to see a bright green ring around my weapons buttons to tell if they are activated. Green against a bright quasar just doesn't show up. It's horrible. I run missions purely by instrumentation ie by the overview and keeping the player camera swiveled towards the darkest part of space -and even that's hard since many systems have a near white "band" that wraps around the player with enough variation up and down to be a complete pain in the a**.
In any case, I'd just about kill to find a way to force the client to not load the space backgrounds -even to the point of being tempted to try hacking the resource files and replacing them with black screens.
And as for the text, well consider yourself lucky. CCP went round-and-round a year or two ago, playing with the fonts and it was pure hell. I also run 1600x1200 and back then the eye strain from the fonts was horrible, but at least the font is now readable for me, and the size can be adjusted some. Trust me it's a 1000% better now.

Did you try turning on 'Widescreen' yet.? Then you get a black background on top and bottem (where youre hud is).

The text issue can be solved by just reverting to the Cold War font. It was far superior to the current font imo, or at least give us the choice to change between a list of fonts.

Yeah I have not liked the font since the Revelations patch so I would have to agree the font needs work.
I also would like to see something done with the readouts that show your modules, cap, shield, armor, and such. I'm sure many of you have been to a bright system at one time or another and noticed that it is very difficult to read your cap or tell if your modules are acually turned on. So what I propose is an option that would add a background behind the readouts. The player could choose the color and transparency or even just to have it the way it is.
I made an image to show what I mean...please forgive the crude artwork here...I'm not a graphics designer and just worked from a screenshot.

Yeah, I'm sure CCP's graphics dept. could do a better job, but at least you get the idea :p

yes we do need bigger context menu fonts and market menu fonts, it kills my eyes too
12 size, works very well on 1024x768, but all modern screens support 1600x1200,1920x and 2400x; at this point you can barely see what is written, while lowering the resolution will make image quality lower.
CCP really needs to look into market window font size, then all fonts in descriptions must be scalable, besides not everyone has excellent eyesight, starring at small text often hurts the eyes beyond 'repair'
issue is very important to every player in eve, protect our vision and enhance our gameplay!

Well since I allready had the picture made I decided to have a little fun with it and came up with the idea to make it into like a dashboard for you ship. I don't know if the devs can do it or not...but what the heck.

I thought it would be fun if you could choose from several different dashboards with settings for transparency and perhaps a light/dark setting. It would be totally optional so if people didn't want to use it they didn't have to. Again I'm sure CCP can come up with better stuff than I did, but I thought maybe some people might like to liven up the inside of thier ships a little since we spend so much time in them.
As for the font Issue, yes the Cold War font looked way better and I think giving people more options can only improve thier gaming experience. You shouldn't have to strain to read the names of items or to read the chat windows...it is bad for your eyes and makes gameplay more of a chore than fun.

With 1920 by 1200 resolution the text seems to be vertically stretched a bit too much. I've gotten used to it and white text is fine for me, maybe 2-3 fonts could be a (hopefully) small change that could make text look more normal. |

Anything shown in widescreen gets stretched out in the game, apparently CCP thinks everyone still has a 4:3 monitor. You can notice this easily when you look at objects that are placed in the left/ride side of the screen, round objects become oval. More options are needed and true widescreen support...

I always thought that was a weird name for 'remove the top and bottom portions of the screen so you can read your ships readout easier' option.
Is it really supposed to be 'widescreen' 16:9 ratio stuff? I hope so, as I have a nice widescreen display for my primary (4:3 for alts) Man goes to the doc, with a strawberry growing out of his head. Doc says "I'll give you some cream to put on it." |

20/20 vision here and my eyes never hurt.
Get glasses.
As for the suggestion for more clutter on my screen: no thanks.
Overview, selected item, fleet, broadcast, ship cargo, drones, ship controls, character screen, journal, bla bla bla bla.. its croweded enough as it is. Change your theme settings or something and sit closer to the screen.

My text was ok. But then I decided to up my graphics setting to some extra Anti-aliasing, and bunch of other stuff set near max, and I got to see my text quality degrade to a sort or fuzzy text. My resolution is still set as my native resolution too..
I also agree the text could use some work. I would like different fonts, sizes, colors would be a nice start. Mr TriX |

The left and right side stretching occurs on all monitors whether 4:3 or widescreen.
