http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-03-26-ccp-launches-investigation-after-eve-online-fanfest-panel-accused-of-mocking-suicidal-player
"We expect public presentations to be courteous and professional towards others."
CCP has launched an investigation after an Eve Online panel at its FanFest convention was accused of mocking a suicidal player.
Eve Online player Kestrel wrote to CCP and Eurogamer today to complain about Thursday's Alliance Panel presentation.
The presentation, delivered by one of the CSM council members and moderated by a CCP employee, featured an in-game communication between two Eve Online players where, according to Kestrel, one of the players clearly indicated suicidal thoughts and showed "obvious" signs of severe depression.
"When this communication was shown to the audience the presenter, along with part of the audience of players and CCP representatives present all had a good laugh," Kestrel said. "The presenter went on to encourage other players of Eve Online to harass this player in the hope that he would eventually be compelled to act on his suicidal thoughts.
"This player's in-game contact information was provided. I found this section of the presentation to be in extremely poor taste."
The panel was broadcast online as part of the streaming of the popular FanFest event, which showcased Eve Online, Dust 514 and World of Darkness.
In response, CCP issued a statement criticising the "abhorrent behaviour" that occurred. It is reproduced in full below.
"I want to reassure you that CCP in no way condones the harassment of players, especially those who suffer from depression or suicidal thoughts, as we understand the possible consequences of such abhorrent behaviour," CCP public relations and social media specialist Ned Coker said.
"Our Terms of Service (TOS), which can be found here, mirror our company's stance on this matter.
"While the content of online interactions between players cannot realistically be gated within our game worlds, we do take very seriously accusations of such behaviour between our players.
"Furthermore, we have a suicide hotline protocol which has, in specific cases, made a difference for several unfortunately troubled players. We appreciate you voicing your concerns on this level, and CCP will be very vigilant in monitoring any behaviour directed towards the individual named in the presentation.
"We are undertaking a full internal review of this panel as well as the process used for vetting the panel's materials. Even though this panel was billed as unfiltered by CCP, we expect public presentations to be courteous and professional towards others."
I hope they kick him off the CSM...

As I stated in another thread. If CCP thinks they need to take action. They will. I don't know the extent of the ToS or EULA in this matter but I would assume that harrassment of other players (which this would fall under) would require at least a temp ban of the account. I would then assume that his position on the CSM would also be revoked. He should not get any special treatment because of his position or influence in the game, but likely will.
Anybody want to orbit a statue in Jita and shoot at it for a while if he doesn't get removed from the CSM? EvE is not about PvP.-á EvE is about the SANDBOX! - CCP!-á Open the door!!! |

IMO this incident reflects very poorly on CCP. CCP holds up the CSM as a crowning achievement in the MMORPG and gaming world overall. They heavily market this body as representative of the players, by the players and speaking for the players. Broadcasting the Chairman of the CSM as he incites someone to commit suicide in such a public manner, does more harm to their brand than any neglect of spaceship in lieu of avatars could have ever done.
I donGÇÖt care to quibble over morals and rules. Players can act however they wish within the confines of their own forums and comms. ItGÇÖs interesting to note that this type of behavior would be immediately locked were it to take place on the EVE Forums; and bans would most certainly be expected. How someone or a group can get away with this on a live feed being broadcasted by CCP in front of thousands of existing and potential players astounds me.
CCP should understand that inaction on this issue will be seen as an approval, if not a full-blown endorsement of this type of behavior. |

This.
People who are depressed should not be playing EVE. If you can't handle Real Life, you should be playing a game that caters to your inability to cope with issues, not one which advocates psychological warfare and tough choices.

I doubt that the EULA covers actions by persons out of game. As this was not done in game or on an ingame forum, it would be rather silly of them to action him for this in my opinion. I haven't seen the presentation itself, so I will not comment on exactly what was said. I prefer to investigate the primary source myself before making a descision on whether what he said was acceptable or not. |
