As no one has replied i am assuming it can't be done, the reason I request this is because the cache folder stores a lot of information and is the biggest application on my first partition to increase fragmentation.
It would be great if CCP could include in there next patch a way to change the default location for this folder, so say I could place it on the same drive as my page file or other partition, different to where I keep my operating system and other applications, thus reducing fragmentation. Heavily fragmented hard drive can sometime be a cause of many issues.

Edited by: Clansworth on 15/09/2008 04:06:39 Well, besides the fact that fragmentation has virtually no impact of the stability of a modern OS, and only a minor performance hit to reading/writing of the fragmented files only, I don't see this as a terrible concern. However, if you DO want it on a non-system drive, you best option would be to simply move your entire Users folder to another drive (not a bad idea, anyways).
Walkthrough here (for vista): http://blogs.zdnet.com/Bott/?p=215

The other day I cleaned up my hard drive and defraged it with a none windows defrag tool to get zero fragments, anyways with in 2 days of playing eve I now have 466 fragmented files in 4194 fragments.
I don't know about everyone but I know a lot of people like to run there OS, applications and games etc on 1 drive and use another partition or drive to keep saved files, downloads, music, Fraps files and video. It makes sense to do this specially for performance, extending the life of your hard drive and backing up important data.
I just think this is worth looking into, very often I hear peopel asking how do you delete your cache folder, why does it end up in such a mess ?.

I think it will be possible to use NTFS links for what you want, same way as it is used to move the cache files to an RAM drive. But CCP does not support the moving of the cache files itsself. _

This sounds like you have a low amount of free disc space, so when files are being written, there is no large open area for them to be written completely. Instead, they are needing to be split to squeeze into the holes left. But again, are you seeing a problem with this fragmentation? Or are you just trained from years of lesser operating systems that didn't have good cacheing mechanisms that defraging is something that must be done?

This. The software is called junction.exe and works on NTFS.

Edited by: Helison on 15/09/2008 22:33:21 You can also try this method with using a batch-file to change the Userprofile-variable: http://myeve.eve-online.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=808449. Thanks to RaTTuS for the good explanation. It¦s not really supported by CCP, but I¦m using this method now for over one year without any problems.

Nope, 1st HDD free space is at 69% on the first partition Secound drive is for page file and video editing
I just like to keep my pc maintenance free, but this normally takes maintenance

Instructions how to move your cache folder etc
1. To creat a .bat file on your desk top make a new .txt file by using notepad on your desk top and input following lines
Set home=d:\Eve\TQ\<username> Set USERPROFILE=%home% Set HOMEDRIVE=%home:~0,2% Set HOMEPATH="%home:~2%" Start "EvE" "c:\Program files\CCP\EVE\Eve.exe
then save as <username> changing the .txt to .bat
2. Creat folders on desired drive same as first line in your .bat file Local settings\Application data My Documents\Eve
3 If you start up eve via .bat file now, you will basicly have a fresh instal of eve. you may wish to copy your orginal CCP folder and place into your new directory "d:\Eve\TQ\<username>Local settings\Application data" to have all your old settings
if everything works ok delete your orginal cache etc.
thankyou to RaTTuS for his guid
