Great thread.
I love hearing about the early days of eve, compared to now it sounds chaotic and bloody fun because of it.

Maybe they still exist and I don't know about them, but there used to be places, I forget what they were called, where waves of NPC's spawned. They weren't complexes, missions or belts or anything conventional, just hidden spots. I had bm's to one but a patch removed all my bm folders so I could never figure out where it was. Then bm's got wiped out anyway.
Speaking of BM's many I'm sure remember flying around in a fast frig making gate to gate bm's so as not to have to fly 15km to jump. There was a whole bm market.
Also, back in the day Yulai was the major trade hub, not Jita.

Edited by: Canine Fiend on 07/10/2008 15:40:23 I don't think these have been mentioned before... slightly newer than the first days of EVE but still about 4 years ago...
Torpedoes not only had splash damage as some people stated, but would also hit whatever was in front of them, whether it was the intended target or not, which meant flying large ships in the way of war targets so they would get concordokkened, or avoiding a missile ship in an asteroid belt because their missiles would hit the roids and never hit you.
It used to be very common to add two MWDs to a ship to make them accelerate to absurd speeds, Dual MWD ravens which fired torps that hit you in huge globs at once were absolutely terrifying
It was possible to fit cruise missile launchers on things like caracals (a full fitting of them) which made for some pretty epic damage out of pretty small ships
Someone mentioned the Curse minerals going missing, it was actually the Xetic minerals, and I know who took them

This one was an awesome skill that some developed, it was possible because despite there being hundreds of thousands of KM between warp points, the EVE system only kept track of a few specific points along this line when you made bookmarks, so if you got lucky enough you could actually make a bookmark on top of someone. It's a shame probes came into play and got rid of this skill, because it made finding someone so much more rewarding, and most importantly it stopped people from keeping things in safespots (Cruisers and sometimes if you were really lucky even a battleship were often found just sitting in space because someone thought they'd made an unbustable safespot)

I used to have a nice deal with techhell buing tech2 miners from them for 5mill and reselling for 10mill, earned my first bs with that deal, a megathron!
2 weeks later i lost it to a pirategroup called "polly want a craker" i bet a few remember those guys ^^
i also remember almost loosing a bs to npc when first npc bs was implemented and their ROF was insane. Their missiles made a nice line from them to you
My first battleship was an Armageddon. In those days one of the best NPC spawning sites was somewhere out in Genesis that had 50k cruisers. Yes! 50k cruisers!
Anyway, there I was, firing away at these cruisers and getting an awesome 50k for each one I killed, when who turns up but a pair of Polly blackbirds.
Luckily, I got out before they could warp jam me.

While I'm myself a tad newer (even when this isn't my oldest character), I do remember the following EVE legends I believe have not been mentioned yet: - m0o corp (masters 0f ownage) camping Mara and Passari systems. They were eventually driven out by CONCORD (GMs in invincible ships). - Any missile shot out of any launcher. Cruise missile frigates. - EVE database has been rolled back exactly once. This happened after some spawn broke and started spewing out really valuable drops, which was quickly exploited. - (semi-mentioned by DigitalCommunist): There used to be no stacking penalty. Damage mods had bonuses on top of bonuses, resulting in huge amounts of damage. Due to multiple low slots on top of the built-in bonus, the Armageddon was the king of the hill. Maller was amongst the best ships, as well. - Everyone used to shield tank. Thus, the Scorpion was the best-tanking ship in the game. - Instead of chance-based, target jamming used to be point-based, like warp scrambling is now. - Talking about warp scrambling, warp core stabilizers didn't have any bonuses (relatively recent nerf!). This led into some people trying to use multiple WCS in combat fits trying to make sure they could escape. - Lasers used to take less cap, while having good damage. This resulted in lasers being used across the board. - Ships used to have one bonus only. Additionally, Caldari hybrid bonus was to railguns only, Gallente hybrid bonus to blasters only. - You could field as many drones as you could fit into your bay. (?) - There used to be no tracking for guns. (I.e. target speed did not matter.) - Locking times used to be constant. If a ship doesn't have a sensor strength modifier, this is the fallback method. (Shuttles, see "It is a Templar, an Amarr fighter drone used by carriers. It can be assigned to shuttles, but I hear the shuttles don't tank too well.")
That's what I do remember. Some might be slightly off.

-A "jove representative" (ccp of course) contacted the corps that had said lasers and asked them to form up at a rally point to give them back for a reward, the reward was the first t2 bpo's (Mining laser II's) (Update: Apparently only one laser was dropped and one corp traded it to the GM..) 6 months before t2 bpo's were released! (Update: There was such a high demand for the first mining lasers that there was an apparent 10-month waiting list! CCP later introduced BPO's 1 by 1, such as when there was an event with a rogue jove general having a battle with other jove ships somewhere in the south, a miner II BPO was going to be dropped, in this event Tyrell corp found the Miner II BPO. After whines from the player base about this systems unfair design, the t2 BPO lottery was soon implemented).
Sorry this is false....TechII minning laser BPO was a rewared from a agent. No corp involved unless you count a noob corp...The player who was rewarded the BPO sold the units for 12 million a pop...and there was not a waiting list....
Damn you CCP! Why did you have to make such a good game?? Yes you drew me back AGAIN! Oh well wheres the Omber? |

Not true, Drone Interfacing didn't give a 20% bonus to drones, but let you launch another drone, up to a number of 10 - and yes, the guardian Vexor was able to launch 15.

Edited by: Shan''Talasha Mea''Questa on 09/10/2008 07:14:20 - Logging on after an extended downtime and buying an object on the market and receiving 100 units every time... didn't take long for the server to go offline and roll a few hours back.
- CCP reimbursing players with free online-time when downtimes got out of hand. Longest downtime experienced by me was somewhere around 6 hours sceduled, streched out to about 36 hours followed by a few days of highly unstable logins and lots of CTD's. Castor sounds about right...
- RMR (Red Moon Rising) used to be called Kali for ages before it went live.
- I remember a fixed spawn of 2 Angel Depredators and 1 Angel Marauder in Horaka.... and they had NPC pirate frigates near the gates.
- A Mammoth at skill 4 with its lowslots filled with 19,6% cargo expanders had a really big cargo-hold.

A few things hehe, good old times here:
- Ships used to fly on when you ejected, so if you had a MWD or AB activated or even warped, the ship would sail into the wild blue yonder without any chance of catching up. A lot of people lost their ship that way!
- Kestrels fitted with cruise missiles made nice suprise packages.. A bullet, Laser beam or Plasma charge may have your name on it..... A Smartbomb or Shrapnel is adressed "To whom it may concern"... |

As was the Ishkur (Ishtar? The HAC, anyway) ... and the Moros, for a brief but glorious period, could launch thirty-five of the beggars. Indeed, I've always believed it was because of the lag created by a Moros attacking you, that caused the change. ________________________________________________

I approve of this thread. Lots of nostalgic moments when reading this over. Some of the stories are true, some are twisted version of what really happened. Favorites have to be the Yulai incident, Jump in points and m0o. I've done and collected a few images from EVE over the years all the way from late Beta to this current day. Most of these images are taken by me, some are not. Here for your enjoyment:
Strange little bug This is very very wrong Chaining rats. Got to the point where we couldn't kill the spawn fast enough CCP being funny 4 afterburners on a Megathron Large hybrids on a Rifter In station Old Minmatar titan design ? When they first introduced afterburners of different sizes Again 4 afterburners + Mobile refinery Again, very very wrong. Miner III When conqurable stations first came into being lol Ninja mining Region control in october 2003 Sometime late beta Phase 4 beta I think Cruise missle fitted crow Amarr titan Don't even know when this is.
Shout out to The Jokers down in Pure Blind for being cool, to Freewheeling throughout the years, and all the other great corp members I've had.

I hearby present the OP with the title of Scop (Dictionary definition of the word scop)
Thou are definitely much like a bard of old, both receiveing and relaying the boasts of the great heros of older times to the new and eager ears in a changed world. Though these boasts may not always be the most truthful at times you relay the stories to the best of your knowledge, and we shall continue to take them with our grain of salt.
(Keep up the work, even if not accurate i do like getting to read some of the ideas, and who knows maybe they'll give people some rather epic ideas for new chronicles or fan fictions. Look at modern stories, often the old and highly embellished tales of old become the inspiration for many a modern tale) Anonymity is not an excuse to be and *******. Think before you post. |

My memories:
You used to be able to fit cruise missiles on a kestrel.
You used to be able to get Capital Ship BPOs and other assorted valuables for under 1m isk, or nothing, from escrow. Escrow camping was a lucrative profession.
There used to be an Eve fan site dedicated to finding random stuff like abandoned stations with nothing else around them that existed in random areas of space.
2+ mwd's on a ship used to be win.
Goonswarm used to go round on masse killing people in noob ships.
People used to buy full region sets of gate to gate bookmarks for upwards of 50m isk.
Shield Boost Amp I and Expanded Cargohold I BPOs used to be worth loads.
