Right so, i built a new machine much more powerful than my previous build which had no problem running 3 clients as well as counter strike and other applications running at the same time
BUT
This machine when i have 2 eve clients running, the second i open a third client entire PC grinds to a half and responds to my commands about 2 or 3 seconds later each time...
My current build is: CPU: 3.6Ghz Phenom II x 4 RAM: 16GB DDR3 GPU: Geforce GTX 560 (x2)
More than enough to handle 3 instances of eve...
Now before when i ran 3 instances of Eve they each had seperate folders for the clients, but this time i just clicked the Eve.exe file a second time to launch a second client.
any ideas wth could be causing this? My PC is more than capable of running 3 clients at the same time. |

Check your video card settings and run a stress test on the video cards. I once had a PCIE slot go bad and was having similar problems. Moved my 580 GTX down a PCIE slot and everything was hunky dory.
Are you currently running SLI or running on 4 separate monitors? Also flash video drivers and get the latest ones from NVIDIA. I would start with the driver options and make sure your SLI is setup properly (if you are running SLI) and then move on to investigating hardware.
For curiosity what is spiking when you open your third client? is it RAM or is it CPU?? Also another thing to check for ***** and giggles is the bandwidth drop when you go from your second to third client open.
I run 8 clients on my build and still could open up crysis and play a game on nearly all high settings (couldnt play BF3 as the bandwidth that 8 clients take was bad).
My setup is: intel I7 2.88 ghz (not exactly sure of the model as I am not home at the Moment) 12gb of DDR3 OCZ memory EVGA mobo EVGA Geforce 580 GTX Dual Monitor
Hope this helps a bit.
~~~EDIT~~~ and this all running on one instance of the client |
Problem is it's an AMD... haha
You are using the launcher right (not sure what you mean by clicking the eve.exe... you just press "play" 3 times...)
You need to see what is going on.
Open up taskman, performace tab...
Load up your 3 eve clients... see what happens to your ram, CPU, etc... see if anything spikes...
I can run 3x eves, killing floor, world of tanks, and do other things with no issues on a simple 875k, 470, 16gig ram.
You be an anti virus acting weird..... whatever do that... lets see if something is eating your ram/cpu. |
I am running SLI for 2 monitors. 1 Card handles both monitors, and the second card kicks in for physix and if the strain gets to much for the first card.
I checked the performance monitor, the CPU spikes to 100% when launching the client, then it tapers off to around 26% but the computer isnt usuable keeps stopping and starting.. the ram doesnt go above 7GB.
But now im looking at the performace monitor while i have 2 clients running and the CPU is staying between 65 and 70%.. It must be the CPU or something. |
The launcher only kicks in for me if there is an update.. I just click start then click the Eve online icon in my start menu :P.
I forgot i am also running a virtual machine as i am attempting to catch up on my work. But even so i only have 1 core dedicated to the VM with like 1GB of RAM also! Shud still have enough to run 3 clients.
Now i still have the VM running, 2 clients of eve and my CPU has dropped from 65-75 down to around 25%!
This is with the usual Norton Anti virus running in the background and Steam also. |
Likely this same issue ruined my playing experience since around Tyrannis until I solved it with step 2 after incarna; Any more than two clients tanked my FPS
I Have two suggestions
1) Always run the game in different folders; With resource cache "DISABLED" ( If you can't run it with different folders still disable cache )
2) Right click the eve executables/shortcuts > Properties > Disable desktop composition ( While as far as I am aware, this shouldn't be an issue... It is regardless )
3) Clearing cache is for champs
4) Add CCP Program folder to AV exclusions |
Few things:
- manually install DX9, "but win7 has DX11 blahblah and that link says it's 2010" Yes I know, do it anyway. - SLI cards don't perform well with windowed games (SLI only applies with full screen) - make sure your CPU isn't overheating and throttling, this may make it seem as if you're having cpu usage issues, in reality it's the CPU shutting down from the heat
Also, don't use separate installs, instead use Junctions. Read this on how to do it, it's really easy and less annoying when applying patches. If you use win7 you don't need to download anything for use, just use the Mklink command as explained. Excellence is not a skill, it's an attitude.
Thanks ill try this, i didnt know that about SLI and windowd mode i do run my clients in fixed window mode.. I cant say the CPU wud be overheating as i have a V8 cooling tower on top of it and that things a beast, including several fans in the chasis. |
A badly installed Cooler won't cool the cpu, it'll just keep itself cool. Download and run Speedfan to see how hot your cpu is getting. I have no recent experience with AMD cpus but if it's anywhere close to 80C or over it might start throttling. Excellence is not a skill, it's an attitude.
Doesn't matter that there should be enough horsepower left to run 3 clients. That's not how multiple processes on a PC work. You can't take your PCs full specs and divide them among the amount of things you're running simultaneously, and assume that they will each perform as if you were running just that on a machine on those specs.
Multiple processes will cause overhead.
Try and run the 3 clients without the VM.
Also, did you increase the quality of your graphics settings, compared to the settings you ran on your old machine?
Some of the settings don't scale that well with multiple clients running, so even tho you have more horsepower, you might have to scale some back to get similar performance that you had on your old setup, in case you turned them up.
No i had all the eve clients on max settins from what i can remember. But back then i didnt use the VM only have the Vm active now cause im doing some work to do with my job. didnt want to shut it down cause the VM client takes like 5 minutes to boot up each time, does a load of checks or something.
But i think i have it sorted now. I used the junction link posted above and it seems to be running fine now with 3 instances of eve and the VM running. Just have to figure out why when they are both in fixed windowd mode the client on my left monitor sometimes jumps to my right montir when i click on the right monitor... and then when i press escape twice it jumps back to the monitor on the left where its supposed to be....
Under your graphics settings change the present interval to "interval immediate". The latency should stop when the 3rd client it brought up.
Think of it this way, the refresh rate is 60 hz or 60fps. The 60fps gets divided up between all the clients running, so the third client take 60 and divides the frame rate by the 3 clients which makes it appear jerky and unresponsive.
Hope this helps.
*edit: Make sure you do this to all instances of your clients in case you setup a separate folder at some point. |
IDK but this isn't the way it's worked out for me, I spent some time testing. I usually run 2-3 clients at a time, sometimes a fourth but never for long (my personal attention "fps" isn't very good). Interval immediate indeed gave me serious fps on all clients, like 150-180 or something along those lines. However, it lead to my CPU temps going up as high as 70C and the graphics card wasn't able to keep cool, which soon enough would result in everything going poopy and me having to go down to one client (or close that, too) till stuff cooled down. Interval one, though, even with three clients running, still has everyone moving along at 58-60 fps with one exception: if some character is sitting at a POS, then I would often lose fps on that client and sometimes also on the other two, down to 20 fps. Nothing else does this to me, not bright clouds in PvE sites, nor firefights at gates with stuff flashing, exploding, moving like crazy, drones and stuff (and I have models on for everything most of the time), nothing. CPU temps stay at around 40C, the GPU isn't melting, three clients, 60 fps, zero problems. Something about POS graphics doesn't sit well with my setup.
I run clients from the same directory, no symlinks. GTX 460 (not overclocked), Intel Core i3, Windows 7, 2 monitors.
Yes 1 card runs my left monitor the second runs my right monitor, they are SLI'd and in the clients i have them set to use individual monitors also
What i dont get is why its doing this at all, my 2 previous ATI cards which were Radeon HD 4870's could run them with no lag what so ever, yet the supirious GTX 560's i have cant... Just doesnt make sense...
Its mostly fixed now thanks to all the posters help but i still notice a tiny jerk every now and again! |
Nothing about SSD is fancy, they are simply a must have. 128 GB minimum.
I'm running 5-6 clients on a single computer, so here is my input on the subject:
- Performance issues sometimes surface when cache files sometimes get corrupted or filled up. Clearing the cache files makes things a lot smoother. I need to do that every week or so when I see the game stutter a bit. Clearing them makes it silky smooth.
- A couple of 560s should be find running the clients, and there is no need for any SSDs. I'm running two clients on another computer on a 470 without any problem (but a stronger CPU tho) and the game is on a normal HDD (1.5TB sata2).
- There is no need for different folders per game client. I'm running all clients from a single install folder on all my machines.
- If you have performance issues, best is to check : CPU usage, GPUs usage and see where your bottleneck actually is (note: its NOT your HDD unless its badly defragged).
My main computer with 5-6 clients is a bit stronger granted, but you should still don't have any issues with two 560s and your CPU. |
