I don't believe they have a trial yet but personally I'm loving it.
Keep in mind it's still buggy as hell. I've been capturing screenshots of weird happening like a horse standing on it's hind legs and flexing with it's forelegs. My biggest issue, although it's gotten better, was completely locking up when I exit the game.
You don't have the cartoon like graphics of WoW, no humans with popeye forearms or elves with 2 foot long ears. If your in the empire it's always a dark and gloomy atmosphere.
Everything you do is pretty much centered around pvp. You have the open arena's that you can just run into and kick butt (I love inner city fighting). You have scenario pvp which functions kind of like capture the flag. And you have keep seiges that I have yet to try but from what I hear in vent it's very exciting, especially when you use a organ gun to shred the unholy opponent. Furthermore each tier of pvp actually means something because you have to control each tier to be able to assault the main city and the tide can change in any tier very quickly. You can also get RVR quests to crank out the xp so really if you wanted you can XP your way to top level if you wanted.
As you gain renown (pvp ranks/level) you can buy better equipment off merchants and you can increase stats. Also people were claiming that you only get money off of the opponent but I've gotten quite a few drops now for my character.
As for questing you can either gather a crap ton of quests and go out to complete them you can just walk into an open quest and join a fight instantly. Open quest serve 2 functions, if you get a high roll at the completion of the quest you can get some decent gear from the lootbox and during the quest you gain storyline xp and if/when you max that you can talk to the rally master in the zone and also get some rather nice equipment.
Now my one personal gripe between the 2 forms of questing is when a personal quest leads you into a public quest which can make it harder to complete the personal as you've got 30 people running around killing the stuff you need to kill.
So far I've got a level 12 Witchhunter with a serious case of tourettes. It's funny as hell when he's in combat and out of nowhere he yells some profanity (English profanity words like *******s!). However I love the dual wield gun and sword style.
I can try to post some screenshots later tonight when I get home.

Standard fee's like eve. $15 for a month, $45 for 3, 6 month and one year (can't think of prices off the top of my head).
And even though I got the strategy guide I don't really know a lot of classes yet.
Empire: Witchhunter - Your basically an assassin against casters. I love stealthing up to a caster and owning them in the face, well in the back actually. You wield light armor and can dish out damage like crazy.
Warriorpriest - healing warrior pretty much says it. You don't wear as heavy armor as other tank classes but you also double up as the healing class and buffer.
Bright Mage - Fire mage. You have a nice array of DD nukes and AOE nukes and after a few of these you tend to turn into the primary target.
Elven lands: Shadowwarrior - Bow class. Not too bad in hand to hand either although you can't take too much damage.
Swordmaster - Main elven tank. Still not as heavy as some tanks but nimble as hell.
Elven mage - not the real name of them. They can cast spells, and I think buffs and heals too although I'm not sure about it. On my server theres like 5 million archer and warrior elves but no mages so they are suffering in RVR on their little island due to lack of heals.
Dwarves: Ironbreaker - The tank of tanks. These guys can take a beating like none other.
Engineer- Kind of a weak class but they pop up all kinds of portable guns, mortars, and flamethrowers and they get a personal gyrochopper for a mount.
Runemaster - Caster for the dwarves. Also the healer and buffer.
As for Destruction I know the chaos has a heavy tank (chaos warrior), medium tank that can mutate (marauder), and a follower of tzeentch (mage, they fly around on little discs and spit out deamons).
Dark elves have a nasty swordmaster class that I hate fighting, witches that are fun to kill, and something else that I haven't seen yet to my knowledge.
Orcs have the black orc (heavy tank), Squig herder (mage), and I think a goblin archer.

Yeah I picked up the 2 cd pack on Thursday along with the strategy guide. Overall it was like $70 or so ($40 for game and 25-30 for book if I remember). It will load a whole lot faster than trying to DL the whole thing.
After that you've got a 250mb patch but it goes by really fast.

Going on what I saw in Beta (I played with a Marauder and a Disciple of Khaine):
The witchhunter / witch elf is basically the equivalent of a rogue or a solo recon ship. Limited stealth, high burst damage, not much lastability. These generally seem to be used for sneaking up on squishy casters and they're boned if anything happens to interfere.
The other melee DPS classes are slightly less ganky but slightly more survivable. That's the marauder and the er... White Lion? Difficult to play well without support I find but last a bit longer than the above classes which makes them better for the scrum. I was using the Marauder like a tackler but they nerfed his snare ability :(
The neat thing about the marauder is his mutant arm can be configured to give you burst damage, DoTs or area effect (as well as debuffs) so you're quite adaptable. I presume the hElf version is similar.
Shadow warrior is bows and/or melee DPS. They have melee skills and a whole mastery tree for that.
Warrior Priests / Disciples are ridiculously crunchy. In PVP they're like a bleeder set-up or something. One on one they can win just by virtue of hanging in there and outhealing your damage (this is surprisingly common even with some of the DPS classes). In groups they can make a big difference. PvE you can just syphon health out of mobs and stay alive for really long periods of time. The Disciple (and I presume the Warrior Prist) is a really fun class to play. You can switch between doing a variety of useful stuff (like druids or paladins I suppose) and you're fairly survivable. Dark Elves don't actually have a tank/warrior class so I guess it's a disciple you were thinking was a "Blade Master" :D I'm thinking of rolling one if I sub.
The archmage and shaman are the stand at the back and heal classes. They do damage and heals and I think they have this mechanism where if you do one you then get a buff to doing the other.
Bright mage equiv is Dark elf sorcerer.
The Tzeentch mage is actually the equivalent of the dwarf engineer. The demons function like turrets (they're stuck in place).
The tanks have different mechanisms. Chosen is aura based, Borc (and Sword master) is tier based, Iron Breaker (and the cut Blackguard class :( ) is grudge based.
This forum has some good guides if you have a poke around: http://www.warhammeralliance.com/forums/showthread.php?t=54163

Edited by: Mea Lustra on 22/09/2008 22:40:03 Played it in open beta, had it preordered and when the game went live I stopped playing. It's not a real MMORPG, it's guildwars on steroids; fast simpilstic leveling to max lvl so you can RVR. It's not like other MMO's or DAoC where you can roam around in vast areas with all kinds of cool stuff going on. Instead it's small maps that push you through as fast as possible to 'process' you to the next tier.
If you like ADHD attentionspan stuff you'll like it, if you want a proper MMORPG then you probably won't.

Yeah so far I've only made 2 classes. My main is the witchhunter and if I can catch a couple of casters off guard then they are toast. Once backup arrives I'm done for but I do as much damage as I can until then.
I also rolled a warriorpriest last night as part of a trio but I only got him to like level 4 or something so I haven't seen too much of him yet. I already have plans to do the buff intensive skill tree for him.
One friend has a shadowwarrior for his main and he's mad that he doesn't get stealth of any kind but he makes a pretty decent support character. We agreed that he would work best with the other friends Ironbreaker guarding one flag while I snuck over to the other flag. And I think I talked him into the guerrilla warfare tree that kinda covers close to medium range style fighting.
The ironbreaker will be choosing the path of stone and is putting everything he can into toughness and wounds. He won't be a major damage dealer but he will be a beast to take down.
And I probably am thinking of the disciple who I hate fighting. Theres one guy that we keep coming across and I swear it takes like 5 people to drop him and he usually gets at least 2 of us. I've got a feeling some of the heals may be reduced later on.

tbh the warrior priest is much the same if played well (if he's taking 2 down out of a 5 person group, that disciple is played well).
Try rolling destruction and see how hard priests can be to take down. They're not at all balanced like "healers" from other games. More like paladins. Very difficult at lower levels. At higher levels the WP is slightly healier and does more burst damage. The DoK does slightly more damage and it's more consistent (or so I'm reading anyway).
The "big" burst heal is interruptable and a morale ability (for both classes I think) so it's not always available.
I dunno how it works with scenarios but for battlefields and world PVP instead of splitting up I'd try and find some way of suckering someone into engaging one or two of you and then ganking them with all three of you.
The way the damage is balanced with how tough the characters can be you want to be ganking to kill anything even slightly chewy in a reasonable timeframe.

I'm pretty interested in WAR. I completely skipped WoW, got sucked into the hellgate hype (that was the worst PC purchase ever), and currently have been sticking with Eve. (Although I probably haven't logged more than 4 hours in the past week and a half due to RL stuff) If you buy the game do you get first month free?

Maybe a sill question, but how does it play? Much grind? And what's the sharding?
Looks interesting for a swords and magic game.

Well, you have to level but it doesn't feel as a grind, not really. They've done a whole lot to NOT make it feel drab... to a point where it almost becomes meaningless. It's devided into tier 1 to 4 (1-10) (11-20) (21-30) (31-40) and they have their own leveling area. There's 3 different area/storylines, one per race per faction and you simply advance from one to the next. The storylines are Dwarf vs greenskins, empire (humans) vs Chaos and High elves vs Dark elves. You can witch between the storylines if you so want to.
One thing they did is great: they made it easy, 'profitable' and natural to group up with others which is a refreshing change. And you can PVP right from lvl 1 and actually level on it, getting XP and gear.
My problem is that it isn't a 'real' MMORPG in the true sense of the word; it's an MMOPVP game, the people looking for the RPG part (amazingly, knowing the IP) is brushed aside to make room for easy, simplistic and short attentionspan gameplay. You really can't make any mistakes and it's all too easy and forgiving. It is NOT DAoC 2, it's rather Guildwars 5.

Edited by: Vigilant on 23/09/2008 13:48:42 Been playing since launch. Fun game, unlike WoW the grind is fun, and not just a reason to get gear.
Btw, the lore has no real "rogue" class, so that is why none exists. Some races have temporary cloaks but they are very limited like the Witch Hunters ability.
Eve will always be "the fall back" game for me at least, I have 5 years invested but I am sure as hell enjoying WAR at this time.

Taking a break from Eve is a good thing, cause like any game you will burn out and sure as hell do not want to burn up (not come back at all). Enjoy, other games and continue training, then come back with new skills and attitude to go with it.
