why is it everyone feels the need now days to post guides for EVERYTHING
what has happened to the days of guarding your knowledge so you keep the upper hand most of the time
i swear if CCP made secret that gave you uber god like powers if you warped to certain plaints in a solar system in a certain order there would be a guide on the forums on how to do it with in a week of someone finding out.
you don't need to tell everyone how to do everything.
there's no one forcing you to share info you find that makes you isks/has that uber fit.
so why would you do it.

One of the biggest complaints against eve is that it has a huge learning curve. Community guides help alleviate that, and that brings in more new players for us to scam. I mean play with. |

The most important thing in EVE is to have fun
Helping others is fun to me. I often check local or Help-chat or forums and give help where I can. I sometimes give ISK to new players and occasionally I give real trading advice with examples of items I'm actually trading in, knowing that it will hurt my trading if someone follows the advice.
But it's fun to me, and I happily use ISK (or lose some potential profit) to have fun.
What other use there is for ISK, than fo have fun?

I use their laziness to my advantage. I'm an industrialist. I love it when people blow each other up; when that happens I see two potential customers.
Rule of acquisition #35: War is good for business.
And in order for there to be more customers, there needs to be more players. If I help keep more players in the game, I develop more customers. Customers who blow each other up and buy more of my ships. Therefore I help people and there are more customers in EvE.
Is that the much more selfish response you were looking for? . |

^^ that's for building things
why would people want to write guides for things that clearly have a affect on there ability do do them when more people do it
as in exploration guides, and WH guides, listing WHs by class and difficultly , Scanning guides, and drug making guides
they all clearly add to your competition and you get nothing in return besides a warm fuzzy feeling, which should be crushed and locked away in the blackest pits of darkness and greed.
you would think of all the MMOs that EvE would be the one LEAST likely to have guides for everything, but nope there's Nothing left that doesn't have a guide written for it .

Having played this game 'some' years there are players who I have remained friends with to this day- I can categorically say they are not people who have been unhelpful to me.
Like much of this game, you can draw a parallel to RL equivalents, you get helpful people and you get c*nts. I know who id rather be around. That which doesn't kill us, makes us stronger.

Guides don't provide all the information. Reading a guide gives you information that is already available just in a condensed version. They are also written from the the creators perspective.
EVE is a situational game. I have read a lot of guides that while technically correct, and do provide a very good starting point, they are hardly complete. It is also interesting how things tend to left out of guides. (the good stuff that nobody talks about). So the guides are just that a guide, they give players a starting point to find the other stuff that isn't on paper.

How do I mine? How do I activate the mining laser? Why does a retriever not fit mining lasers? Where do I find X ore? Which is more valuable, refined or raw ore? Is there anything that mines faster then X industrial? ect. ect repeat ad nausem
Its like the whining of the OP, it doesn't end with the questions you have to answer for every newb just as the OP needs to somehow find a excuse to negate any reason for a guide. Well, one simple reason is...consolidated information --> Link Halda's mining guide, mention it is outdated but so is the entire mining profession and move on. BAM! Done, single source of information. And most guides just explain how do something at the basic level, they don't explain in XXX-rated explicit detail to buy X item low and move it to Y System to sell it exactly at Z price. |

I can easily think of several reasons, all in line with EVE:
1) You aren't a producer of said goods, you are a consumer and you WANT more competition. 2) Knowledge is a key resource for economic prosperity. By spreading such knowledge, you grease the economic wheels. 3) You are "getting out" of the profession, and no longer have any vested interest in keeping your information secret. 4) You are moving up the production line and want the components you used to build to be cheaper. 5) You want the market to grow, so it can support higher volumes.
Basically, it all boils down to you wanting someone else to do the work for you. |

and yet we are back around to the building things/mining things
that still doesn't cover why people want to make guides for exploration, because no matter in what way you spin it more competition in exploration is NEVER a good thing

Au contraire, there is plenty of benefit to creating an exploration guide.
Exploration can be used to: 1) Get Datacores, decryptors, interfaces - all needed for T2 production. The more plentiful these things are, the easier T2 production becomes. 2) Get salvage - needed for rig production. The more plentiful these are, the cheaper rigs become. 3) Locate sleeper sites - needed for T3 production. The more plentiful these are, the cheaper subsystems and T3 ships become. 4) Locate asteroid belts - which supply ABC ores. The more plentiful ABC ores are, the cheaper high ends become, and the cheaper T1 ships and capitals become. 5) Exploration is related to PvP probing, which causes more ships to be destroyed, which increases demand for various PvP related goods (ships, mods, ammo, etc) 6) Anamolies and escalations, which can drop faction/deadspace loot. These items can be very rare, and someone who wants to buy said items has a vested interest in making exploration widespread. |

Stop being a selfish c*nt. So new players should stay ignorant because of you? I am a fairly new player myself (4/5months?) and these guides helped me to get through the learning curve and stay with the game unlike many others that fall off because of that. FYI a mmo needs new blood to stay alive and if the learning curve of this game is a big roadblock the best thing you can do is to make it easier for them. ~ When everything fades away, an echo is the only sound that will remain ~ |

Damn! I ran out of quotes!!! Let's change format :)
"Fitting Guides - people fitting better - less fail fits to lol at in KMs = BAD" More potent oponents means more challenge; harder = BAD .... for wussies
"Moon mining Guides - More Moon competition = BAD" See part about exploration
"there's no up side to having MORE competition" One can tell you haven't taken economy classes, I don't bame you, they can be tedious
There are many upsides to helping/teaching such as better environement, attitude, feeing of actualization/achievement and cleaner forums.
Also, education helps knowing the difference between "their" , "they're", and "there"; I would strongly suggest finding a guide ;) /null hard_feelings |
