In a shock report ABC news (from the US) reveals that you need to actually monitor what your kids get up to when playing games online. Ignoring the issue that the kids shouldn't really be playing them anyway it advises parents that they need to keep an eye what they get up to.

Why the hell would you be letting a kid that young play online in the first place? And why in hell would you let kids that young play games like that anyway? This is a case of total parent failure. |

It is for those who do let their kids play despite all common sense. Just telling people not to do it when they already do not care is likely to fail.

I have yet to run into anyone that young in eve. but back when I played wow, I would get swarmed by the irritating twerps. they all seemed to have this self entitlement thinking that just because they managed to scrape their way to max level, they deserved to be brought into raids, and that they should get first dibs on loot. I mean imagine someone showing up at an incursion, a month old in an all t1 fit BC with no rigs and complaining that nobody will invite them to a blitz fleet. as well as them yelling at the other 95% of the players any time we swore. |

I have seen a 12-year old kid flying a faction fitted Machariel quite effectively (and not a bad fit either). The real problems start when such kids start pewning 20-30 year old know-it-all-type of players in PvP. The disbelieve over what had seemed impossible leads to the most amazing outbreaks in personality issues. |

It's not quite cut and dried. Parents of a certain age who missed the whole internet thing might just not have any reason to understand the nature of online gaming. They may just see some sort of extension, which they don't have time to research, of a computer game which entertains their child. The report, I guess, is aimed at just nudging those parents towards some sort of awareness.
There's also the question of just what sort of violence is acceptable to young children. Would you let a 9 year old play EVE? If he blows up a single rat how many people is he killing? Probably more than in an entire COD session. I'm not saying the OP is wrong, but it's not clear cut imho. |

The point, you missed it. They should not be playing the game in the first place, when a game is rated a certain age its because of the content of the game. Not the online interaction.
Like the way EVE has a content rating and a disclaimer that all interaction between players are not rated.

'Play' has always been the prefered baby sitter; there is nothing new there. The relatively new epidemic is that parents are too scared to let/force their kids to play outside.

Yep. Good thing we at least managed to stop paying into the family fortune of a bunch of inbred royals. Otherwise the embarrassment would be insufferable. |

I just hate it when you're out leveling and they attach themselves to you. Had one kid in rift not only follow me across the map, but he crossed the ocean with me into enemy territory and followed me there. He died after the second fight and released. I died about a half hour later, released, and there he is! Bam, started following me again. |

Who do you think is the silent partner in the privately held bank your a calling Federal Reserve that is solely responsible for creating your money(aka debt, check your dollar note). So that you have to pay the interest on said debt to them, what you mistake for paying taxes. |

I think America put too much stock into that movie called "Star Wars" and specifically Yoda's teachings. I wish someone would tell the Americans that the movie is fiction and not only did it not take place in real life but GÇ£Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.GÇ¥ is not true. Yoda is at best a faggadocious bastard which is to say he is not to be taken serious and what he says is not true literally or figurative at all!
Also he is a bastard.
We should all know by now that such wisdom, life-lessons, teaching and physics are reserved for those blessed with a high midi-chlorian count. |

Slow news day. That or catering to the new "helicopter parents".
**** the other day I heard this moon bat story. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/29/alicia-silverstone-premastication-pre-chew-food_n_1389544.html
I just know some hippie somewhere saw ******* "nature" one too many times (birds) and thought it was "natural" or some how thinks "cavenmen" did it so probably a good idea. (Silverstone being kinda a big tree hugger.)
WHAT THE **** ! Children wont even to be able to eat their own food from now on... This of course means extinction when a species can't even eat it's own food on its own. |

Or they don't get hysterical over some teens teaching their 8 year old bad words.
Parents letting their kids play games online are not bad by default. |

So parents that use consoles to babysit their children also watch everything they do?

There was a time when I believed no one could be that ... uninformed. After working as a TECH SUPPORT in a place where I was the "computer guy" and a Psychologist that tended to the SERVER (yes, I was SysAdmin) only because I knew how to enable CMD in windows to bring up a console to check pings ... well, I don't blame anyone anymore.
Good thing about that gig was that I stopped working as a Psychologist and realized how much free time most Tech related people get. I also learned about VMWare Virtual Machines setup and running plus Server Virtualization, and handling Win2008 Server servers, which I know mix well alongside my Verbal Techniques and Rogers Client Centered Therapy method for soothing stress related issues ... meh, only because I was already in the payroll and could do both jobs for the same pay. :*(
So yes, people need to be informed. People , normal run of the mill people, usually bother more with their regular jobs, kid related issues like social gatherings (if female) , families, money issues and perhaps a mistress or two (if male) in Latinamerica than actually bothering to check up facts in the internet about what online gaming is or what it entails
Normal people scare me and I scare normal people when I begin talking about Internet Spaceships and pew pew and Killing orcs with my Legendary Item weapon in the name of the Dwarven gods and Clan
