OK supposing i have two sticks of RAM with a capacity of 512mb each Can i simply put in two sticks of say... 1 gig of ram
thus getting 3 gigs of ram? or should i replace the existing sticks?
i heard somewhere that if your sticks of ram arent the same it slows down the computer. just want to know if this is true --------------------------------- Post With Your Main |

Yeah. But in this day and age, unless you bought one of the cheapest boards you could find, you're better off adding more than replacing it.
Edit - note though that some boards aren't as effective with more than a certain amount of RAM. My board, for instance, slows down performance if there's more than 2 Gigs in it. I can't remember what it does, but I didn't bother getting 3 and just stuck with 2 when I bought more.

motherboards from at most 3 years back often work on the dual-channel principle, meaning that if you're going to use more than one stick of ram, its best to get a matching set. Often most motherboards have their ram slots color-coded to see which slots are meant as pairs for dual-channeling.
Also, if your mobo is not recent (aka more than 1yr old), chances are that your mobo wont like mismatched pairs (2 512's and 2 1gb's).
Best consult your motherboard manual and online references. -
