Hello guys, I checked out the list of ship fitting threads in the sticky, I really did, but anything that may have covered my request was very outdated. Thus, I am making this thread.
I've been playing eve on and off for a few months placing me at about 5m sp(2 of which is learning), mostly in generalized useful skills. The thing is I would like to get into pvp and since I know fairly little about it the plan is to test the waters in a frigate. The idea is to fool around in low-sec attacking people and try not to die.
So....what frigate would suit this purpose? A reasonably cheap(but not overly so - top t1 named is fine) setup that will give me a feel of how things work, with getting blown up a bunch of times in mind, would be really appreciated.
Thanks!

The Punisher is pretty much the best example of the Amarrian T1 frigate lineup. Like the Kestral for Caldari or the Rifter for Minmitar, the punisher demonstrates the essential idea behind the Amarrian PvP philosophy - namely, get a battery of lasers, slab on some armor and dive straight into battle.
While it won't fair well against most ships in a 1v1 (no t1 frigate can really claim to be terribly effective in a general sense though), the punisher can be fitted for a fair amount of gank, or tank, or a combination of the two. The most common, and arguably most effective implementation of the ship is what's called a "bleeder" punisher. The essential theory of operation is:
High: Pulse Lasers Small Nos
Mid: MWD (or AB) Point
Low: Damage mod Active armor tank
Rigs: None
I'll leave specifics up to you. While such a fitting will work fully with T2, this only becomes true when you have very high fitting skills. The ship is best utalized to take down other frigates and the occasional cruiser. It's actually one of the most fearsome ships to face in a T1 frigate. The cap warfare is absolutely devisating, and the high EHP combined with a good active tank and fairly stout firepower is a lethal combination. Outside of these scenarios, the ship becomes little more than a disposable tackler (and in this scenario, against a battleship an AB is often a better bet for long term survivability). The active tank sufficiently pressures the punisher's cap to ensure the NOS will generally be attacking the opponents cap stores as well. |

Punisher. Excellent frig, altohugh a bit slow.
Don't use best named stuff, t2 is generally cheaper and more effective.
fit: Small Armor Repairer II 200mm Reinforced Rolled Tungsten Plates I Damage Control II Adaptive Nano Plating II
J5b Phased Prototype Warp Inhibitor I X5 Prototype I Engine Enervator
Dual Light Pulse Laser II, Amarr Navy Multifrequency S Dual Light Pulse Laser II, Amarr Navy Multifrequency S Dual Light Pulse Laser II, Amarr Navy Multifrequency S Small 'Knave' I Energy Drain
T2 frig mods don't take too long to train for and you should be pretty close to t2 guns if you took a military career at start.
Replace faction crystals with regular ones if you want to save some isk. Always carry scorch ammo though. |

The problem with the Punisher is that it only has 2 mids. You either fit an AB/MWD and a point, but can no longer web. Or you go point/web, but have no speed to catch them. If you are flying solo and just looking to shoot things then the AB/Point combo is the best. If you go MWD/Point you take a chunk of grid and cap and have to fit lesser weapons. The Point/Web comes into play if you know you can get in close and orbit.
I personally like to fly with my friend in his Ceptor for frig PvP. He will engage someone and point them at max orbit with his MWD cooking and shooting missiles. I'll warp in to him and with the AB/Web setup get in the guy's face, web him, and orbit at 500 with pulses shooting off. We have taken down a few cruisers this way and a few frigs. Its a cheap loss for me, and the only thing that has popped the Crow was a Vagabond overloading his MWD.
