Hi everyone,
Now I know what I am about to ask you may seem a little noobish or common knowledge. I have little experience in the field of pvp so this is why I am asking.
- What ships should you generally stay clear of? - What ships should you report to your corp if seen? - What should be in your overview? - What should you look at or for when doing small recon? - What ships could a "normal" battlecruiser take out? ... frig, battleship, and so on. - When pirating what should you be aware of / on the lookout for? Or when alone - What should you do when you initiate a solo pvp? When attacked? - What should you do when you are in a fleet? corp/ war - What should you do when you see a cyno field? if anything (saw one the other day) - What information would be useful to your corp? - What are some of the biggest money makers? - What should you never do? - What would you bring if you got stranded on an island?
If you think of anything else please feel free to add it. Thank you, HeJoku

I'll try this.
- Things that can kill you. - Things that can kill you or corp members - Corp members shouldnt be in your overview, but things that can kill you should. - Things that can kill you - Things that can't kill a battlecruiser - lots of things trying to kill you that can't and eventually end up smacking you while sitting in station - kill the other guy first. after getting attacked kill the other guy first - kill things the fc says to kill. kill war targets - try to kill whatever comes through the cyno. but refer to question number one for engagement rules - information about things that can kill you or other killable things - killing carebears - have corp members on your overview. ask inane questions on the forums - i dunno. something that wouldn't kill me.
there you go. answered. |

please be a little more in depth. And this is assuming your corp is in low sec, if that helps. |

First thing you should do is to fit a ship you can afford to loose and head out to lowsec or even 0.0 and just try out stuff. The fact someone might have a bigger ship with bigger weapons doesn't allways make him the bigger chance on a win.
Big part of how an outcome in a one on one will be is dependant on the setups of both ships.
Look ingame for some Corporations that promote PvP, best chances are some of the older and more notorious Merc Corporations or Pirate Corporation. Yes ingame they might be damn big pains in the ass, but through the years you will discover that gameplay is completely different then the people behind it and if you actually behave in a normal or humerous way when having a chat with one of em you can learn a lot and even have a ton of laughs the next time you suddenly have to reactivate your clone.

Such a broad topic.... I'll try to respond succinctly.
* Whatever can kill you or summon others to kill you. This is something you learn with experience generally, or by working with others. But there's no hard and fast rule. A well-fit frigate with good skills could kill a battleship flown by an idiot, and it happens every day. * If you're in a corp claiming space, anything that's not blue, generally. * Enemy ships, enemy drones, stargates. Make multiple tabs so you can switch overview filters fast. * Depends on the purpose. If you're the scout for a roaming gang, learn to use your scanner and find targets fast. * A "normal" BC isn't. There's no such thing. See #1. In general, big ships shoot hard but aim badly, while small ships aim better but shoot lighter. Don't count on it, though. * If you're going to engage in solo PVP, you want to get a warp disrpution point on him first, make sure you're mobile and at your optimal/outside his range, and start your drones, guns and ewar. Don't forget to monitor your tank, if any. * In a fleet, you obey the FC. Always, and without question. If he's wrong, point it out politely, but follow orders regardless, even if it means your ship pops. * Cynos mean many things. If you're in a hostile gank gang deep in enemy space and a cyno opens nearby, it might be time to GTFO. Of course, if you're quietly ratting in a .3 system and a cyno opens, it's probably not for you. * Anything about targets, including shiptypes, disposition, position, speed and direction. * Ratting, missions and exploration. * Assume a loss wasn't your fault. * Lots and lots of rum and a bunch of books.

No amount of theory can replace practical pvp experience. SniggWaffe are pretty good and they train new combat pilots.

A1: I generally stay away from the Rapier/Huginn and the Curse/Pilgrim. Those are really the only ships that bother me.
A2: Anything *expensive*, so to speak. If you're talking about low-sec-piracy, anything and everything I imagine.
A3: Neutrals, Hostiles, and War-Targets. I also recommend you create a seperate tab for drones.
A4: Need more specifics.
A5: Depends on the Battlecruiser and your skills. My Myrmidon has solo'd a 2005 Gank Megathron.
A6: Bigger fish than you.
A7: Kill the son of a ***** before his buddies arrive. Also ... pray to whomever you pray to.
A8: Follow the orders you're given.
A9: If you have a big enough fleet, fly to the cyno, engage the target on sight, kill or be killed.
A10: If you're living in low-sec and are pretty much a dedicated pirate, any and all information regarding your area could be considered useful.
A11: Null-Sec Ratting & Low-Sec Level-4 Missions. Par that, killing expensive ships for the t2/faction/plex loot, ransoms, and sometimes T2 salvage. =)
A12: **** off someone bigger and badder than yourself. Lol.
A13: M-a-r-i-j-u-a-n-a, two blue-eyed and blond sex-slaves, beer, beer, and a laptop to play EvE on.

Edited by: Vid Eeomeet on 30/09/2008 13:00:15 The first response may sound vague, but oddly enough, he's right. Most of the answers to your questions are found through trial and error.
Here are a few general points (not in any particular order) off of the top of my head...
Before attacking it's not a bad idea to make sure you can see the targets speed. For example, there's almost no point in going after something faster than you when webbed.
Learn how to use the onboard scanner. Always have it set to max scan range.
Check local for obvious friends of your potential target.
When you start to go down (new to pvp, you will die a good deal) start madly clicking warp to some warpable object, so when your ship pops you're already prepaired to warp your pod out.
When in a fleet, follow orders and keep voice coms clear so all can hear the FC or scout. Shoot at the primary target as ordered.
If you're unsure what a specific ship can do to your battlecruiser, check the info and bonuses on your targets ship. Something that can drain your cap fast (unless you're counter fitted for it) may not be a good target. (Cap drain just an example of some of the more nasty ship bonuses out there.)
When caught in a gate camp, try to reapproach the gate you came through as fast as you can. You have a better chance of living than trying to run from the camp deeper insystem.
Yeah, absolutely don't fly what you can't afford to get blown to bits.
Keep your clone updated.
Most 'normal' (fitted to take advantage of listed BC bonus) battlecruisers are a hell of a fight for frigates, assault frigates, cruisers, other battlecruisers, stealth bombers, and even some heavy assault cruisers.
Cap is generally an issue in protracted fights, be prepaired to replenish your cap, (boosters) or fit your ship so it's as cap stable as you can while running the modules you need in a fight.
Do not just use EFT to pit numbers against numbers. EFT is a great tool, though actual combat experience is best. Too many in-combat variables are not covered by EFT.
Think twice about attacking old characters even when you outclass their ship, unless you feel there is enough of a difference between potential ship power.
Just a few good points to keep in mind.

- What ships should you generally stay clear of? Amarr recons, unless you're in a missle/drone boat and really know what you're doing. Curse is a very mean ship. Minmatar recons are also nasty. - What ships should you report to your corp if seen? Whatever your corp is interested in - What should be in your overview? All ships, sometimes drones, sometimes nothing but ships, usually no friendlies (gang/fleet/corp/alliance/milita members) - What should you look at or for when doing small recon? Depends what you're interested in. If you're scouting make sure you grab the shiptypes of the enemy fleet and if possible their range from the nearest object. - What ships could a "normal" battlecruiser take out? Cruiser-class and smaller that ventures into desired range, possibly battleships if well-piloted and well-fit. - When pirating what should you be aware of / on the lookout for? Or when alone Anything that can or will kill you, scouts, signs that other gangs are moving through. - What should you do when you initiate a solo pvp? When attacked? Shoot them, if you start losing, try to get out of range and warp off - What should you do when you are in a fleet? corp/ war Depends 100% on the fleet composition and what you're flying - What should you do when you see a cyno field? if anything (saw one the other day) Is it yours? If so, nothing. If not, and you're with a group ready to kill capitals, wait there and kill it. If not, and you're not, hang out to see what shows up and then gtfo (capitals lock really slowly, so you can hang out and watch if you want) - What information would be useful to your corp? I dunno, what's your corp like? - What are some of the biggest money makers? If you're clever, scamming and trading. If not, ratting/mining/missioning. - What should you never do? forget to warp out if you're being attacked, can't tank it, and are 60km away from anything that could possibly warp scramble you - What would you bring if you got stranded on an island? booze, women, music, food, laptop |

1) Rapier/Huggin 2) Everything, but it depends on where your corp is located.. not much use to report all gazillion ships in jita if your corp is in 0.0 .... 3) as much data as you need, and everything -not- friendly. (remove corp/alliance from overview) 4) incomming ganksquads or lone miners.. 5) depends on fitting and pilot skill 6) everything, you really want to keep an eye on everything, especially when alone.. every ship you engage might bring 20 friends... 7) a) stay alive.. b) kill enemy. 8) follow the FC, if he tells you to jump, JUMP.. don't ask how high.. 9) verify it's friend or foe, if friend, move along, if foe, report it to corp/alliance/fleet... if it's a lone ship (like a rorq with a frig cynoalt), engage and see what's going on, else stay the foook away until you got reinforcements. 10) bit vague question. 11) trading. 12) die. 13) dig up the rum and start drinking. |

A LITTLE???
Nooooo, IMPOSSIBLE!!! Those questions are FAR from noobish when it comes to PVP. It's Noobish in every damn aspect of the game, dude
What you need to realise is that there are no true answer to any of your questions. What is dangerous to you in your ship, can be easy for me in my ship. Don't bother reporting stuff if you don't know what it is. To know what it is, you need to learn about the game as a whole. And judging by the questions, you seem to know very little about the game and are now trying to focus on the PVP aspect. Unfortunatly it is a bad thing to do that, which is why you get the replies in this thread in a not-so-helpful tone... |

Well, there's a lot here, but since I'm bored in DT, I'll answer:
- Generally I steer clear of Rapiers, Huginns and Curses. However, I try to steer clear of anything that can kill me in the current ship I'm flying.
- You should report ALL intel to your corp, or in your local intel channel, if you have one.
- For your overview, you should have different tabs set up for different things. This also depends on your corp/alliance policy (NBSI, for example), and where you are (0.0, lowsec, highsec). If your policy is NBSI, you might not want to shoot that neutral in lowsec, even though your alliance policy says you can.
- I don't know what a "small recon" is. I sometimes go out on my own and recon prior to leading a fleet, looking for general enemy activity and a place to take my fleet later. Scouting during fleets is more of an affair of making sure the fleet is not jumping into a trap in the next system, and trying to tackle targets as an advance scout.
- There is no such thing as a "normal battlecruiser" because all of them have different capabilities. Most battlecruisers will win a straight out fight against any other T1 battlecruiser or smaller T1 ship, but will probably lose against most HACs. Recons are somewhat grey, because some will **** a BC silly and some will fold like paper. Learn your ships and learn what you can handle, best advice I can give.
- When pirating you need to be on the lookout for other pirates! You also need to be watching for anit-pirates and people like me who are completely indiscriminate and will kill anyone that's flashing red if I get the chance.
- When you initiate solo PvP you should be watching local, and if it goes up, it might be time to rtfa. If you're in a busy system (which you will be if you're successfully pirating usually), then you should be watching your directional scanner at a distance of 2-4 million km, and 360 degrees and spamming the scan button. That's a close range scan, and if you see a bunch of stuff on it, you better gtfo. Pack ECM drones if you're going to solo PvP, and hopefully they will jam the target for a cycle if he's tackling you so you can run. They are throwaway lifesavers. When you're attacked, try to MWD out of scram range or use the ECM drones if yo have them, or call for backup if you think enough people can get there in time. 9 times out of 10 if you're attacked, you're going to get jumped by more than 1 person.
- When you're in a fleet you STFU, listen to and follow the directions of the FC and shoot at the primary target when it's called. If you can't hit the primary, shoot whatever you can hit, but if you CAN hit it, you better be shooting it. Also, don't show up in useless ships like a Caracal. Wars are pretty straightforward: don't autopilot anywhere and get a scout or fit 4-5 warp core stabs if you're in a battleship and it's a serious war.
- When you see a cyno, you can warp to it at 100km to investigate it if you're in a fast ship. Don't warp to it at 0 unless it's at a station. If you see one while you're in the middle of a fight, rtfa.
- Where the enemy is, what they're doing and what they have in their fleet. Shiptypes are key here. Nobody like the x people in y system reports because they're useless most times.
- Not PvPing, that's for sure. Missions, 0.0 ratting, market trading, manufacturing.
- Never underestimate a target, and never underestimate how stupid people can be.
- My laptop and a solar battery charger, and a collection of my favorite games. I'd be in heaven probably.
