Chribba, if you would seriously consider to rework Eveboard a bit, then it could be a good idea to create global ranks across professions (we could take the dozen from the Eveonline page, and would only need to identify which skill groups need to be included in which profession), races (what I personally would not find that thrilling, since races don't mean anything anymore in game) or "age groups" (new pilots up to 1 year, 1 to 5 year olds, 6 to 10 year olds, 10 years and above, or something like that). Of course everything with my proposed pilot age relativisation.
There could even still be total global rank, constructed from the average of a pilot across all special ranks where he is listed. "Our lives are not our own. We are bound to others, past and present. And by each crime, and every kindness, we birth our future." Sonmi-451 |

I agree with Viggen, Even if Abandon AllHope was ranked #1 in every ranked category the lowest possible score he would get is 35.00 (35 category's in the Global Rank devided by #1 in DOB category)
So he would be pushed down 1,000's of places with no possibility of progression.
So we're back to penalising 1 group in favour of another.
The best solution is to have several Global Ranks (with boards of Fame) that cater to the different groups of players.
You cannot cater to all groups fairly and equally with a single Global Rank. |

Amateratsu wrote:So he would be pushed down 1,000's of places with no possibility of progression.. It's the other way around, actually.
Abandon could increase his ranking, when he would decide to work to balanced skill groups. That would probably take some months or even years, but he could. A young pilot never could remedy his young age and has not even a theoretical chance to reach the Top1000 with the present system.
Right now, simply being an old pilot who has not forgotten to switch skills is rewarded. No achievement here. So the ranking at it is right now does not reflect achievements, but simply the fact that one has been around. We are talking pilots which work for a balanced skill set here, specialised pilots are at a disadvantage, since they have bad standings in neglected skill groups which effect the global ranking much more then excellent standings in some other skill groups. Eveboard is and will probably always be a ranking platform which rewards balanced pilots and disadvantages specialized pilots - what would justify the introduction of rankings for specialized pilots. The example above is #1 in all ranked category's which would require every skill in game trained to Lv5, so that is as balanced as it gets, so no he cannot progress any farther.
he will always be beaten by younger players like the 1 in Viggens example with a score of 1.52, where Abandon AllHope cannot get a score lower than 35.00.
So he and 1,000's of other players like him will be penalised and locked out of the running, just for being an old player. |

You are right, Amateratsu, But that would only put like 100 pilots into disadvantage. A pilot just 2 days younger then Abandon would already rank at a place of 100 or so in that ranking group "Date of Birth" and with the theoretical 35 score for place 1 everywhere achieve a new score of 0.35 or so, what would put him probably at the top of the list.
There is probably no perfect solution for this, but I rather put a hundred pilots into disadvantage (which won't care that much about things like this, being old and grizzled and such...) then tens of thousands of young and eager people who are on disadvantage right now. It won't be just a 100 pilots who are disadvantaged.
Every older pilot will be disadvantaged by every other pilot younger than himself.
At the moment the veteran pilot with his 100+ million SP has the advantage, With your proposal it will be a complete reversal of roles with the newer players moving to the top of the ranks and the older players being pushed down to the bottom of the ranks no matter how many or what skills they train.
and the newer players will only hold the top ranks until they are overtaken by new players younger than themselves.
Eventually as players complete training of all skills in game the Global Ranks will be sorted by DOB and there will be Zero movement in the top 100, top 1000, top 10,000 and so on.
In the end it won't be skills or SP that determins your rank, it will be your DOB |

Maybe we could just add a second global ranking according to my proposal? Keep the existing one for the old pilots, and offer the new one for the younger pilots. "Our lives are not our own. Chribba, The last update of the global ranking appeared to use data that was about 24 hours old. For example my targeting rank was based on 1,452,990 skill points but the data in pilot information was showing about 1,500,000 at the time of the update. I am aware that I need to switch skills in order for the API to show the new skill level, but trust me when I say I know my API was up-do-date and had shown much more than 1,452,990 for many hours before the global rank was updated. As far as I could tell, the previous update worked fine. Otherwise, I like the once a day updates. |

It seemed to work fine last night, so probably a false alarm. There is obviously some lag between when all the data is collected and when the final ranks are posted and I guess that could explain what I saw. I will keep an eye on it. I've been playing around with scraping data off of Eve Board so I am probably more aware than the typical user. |

If a character is left untouched, it's only updated on average every other day... so yeah if a character is updated just after a rank change it would take 24 hours until next generation, and if not touched it could take some days before a change occurs.

Chribba Any thoughts on how the Certificate category's might be reworked for Rubicon?
On Sisi The old system of Basic, Standard, Improved and Elite Certificates is Out.
There are now a total of 60 Certificates each with 5 levels.
So you could change the category's to
Total Certs - Certs at Lv5 - Certs At Lv4 and so on...
Do we count each Certificate level as a separate Certificate for a total of 300 (60x5) or like we do with skills where once you have no Certs at a given level you get penalised with a no data penalty?
Wound be interested in what you and other think.
Thanks

Good question really. Problem (I think) with certs is that you can also chose to not claim some so one could "play" the certs there - unless sisi also includes that you auto-get them if met the reqs?

If I read the dev blog correctly you will automaticly be issued the certs on qualification, no more having to manually claim them.

Greetings fellow eveboarders, and thanks as always to Chribba for providing this outstanding service to the community!!
Chribba, my page seems to be in order, but for some reason my ranks have not been calculating for the last several days. Please have a look when you get a chance, let me know if I need to give my API a kick in the pants or anything...

Ranks should now be back - however I had to reset everyone so you might be moving around a bit. Not sure what happened but seems about 8,000 pilots lost their ranks, my guess is that this was due to a locked table at the time of a rank generation.

Thanks, C.
It currently looks like ties are sorting out differently. (If I remember correctly, the 2ndary sort was on overall rank.) I don't know if the data exists, but it'd be cool if ties were ranked by chronological order of achievement... i.e. the first guy to max out Navigation would be ranked number 1 in Navigation, etc.

Currently ties are sorted by global rank, If you sort them by order of achievement, you will limit how far players can climb the ranks.
Take Subsystems for example where there are currently 923 players who have completed that category, which means anyone completing the category now will get a rank of 924 which will add 26.4 points to their global score limiting how high they can climb the global ranks.
the result will be 1000,s of veteran players sitting stagnant at the top of the ranks and unable to progress any further.
at that point EB will be nothing more than a list of members with 0 movement or progression. |

Point well taken, but I think the difference in rank between methodologies would be minimal. Subsystem player #923, for example, with an overall rank of 32,000 is four-plus years and 100 million skillpoints away from cutting his rank in that skill category in half to #461, a position currently held by a 150 mm skillpoint player with a rank of 3,200.

We kinda have this already, which is probably the bigger problem. Most skill categories are heavily populated with characters that have maxed out the category. Perhaps we need more, advanced skills with heavier prerequisites and longer training times and/or a sixth level to spread out the pack and give people room to grow.
I'm all for as much competition as possible, but unfortunately the skill system inherently favors older characters and there's no easy way around that. Some good discussion on that recently. I like the idea of having separate boards for several age classes: 0 to 1 year, 1 to 3 year, 3 to 6 year, 6 or more year, or something to that effect. |

any tips? |

@rank discussion it's tricky to find a good way of sorting indeed when ppl are maxed out so we might need to try and find another type of sorting. also I do not keep track of "who reached something first" as that one is a bit hard to keep track of exactly when people could get there before someone else but the 2nd person happen to get updated before the first.
