How many R&d Agents can you collect datacores from at once? I heard a single character can only harvest from a certain number.

I believe the maximum is six, if you have Research project management at level five and the first one you get without requiring the research skill.

How exactly do you start getting datacores from R&D agents? Do you have to do missions for them, or what?

basicly what happens is once you get the skills to use a R&D agent you have them lead your research project. Each day this agent makes reasearch points (work just like lp) and you trade these for datacores.

What type of mission? Would it be a kill mission or something?
I'm rather liking what I'm seeing so far. I can get about 5 mil a day or more in datacores from what it looks like.

depends on the level of agent but i think its a mixture of kill/courier but as i have yet to do it myself i cannot be sure.
Also rp depends on the level of the agent, so level 4 agents naturally give more rp than a level 2. And it also depends on how much datacores cost rp wise, i think they average 150 rp for a datacore.

They don't get stuck, but doing their mission gives you a day's worth of extra RP. If you do these missions, you receive one per day, per agent. Unless it's changed recently, they give you one of two missions: bring them some tritanium, or deliver a 1m3 package.

Trying to learn a little more about this, and I guess this is something that you would learn once you get to that point, but as I am still skilling up to use the agent I figured I would ask.
Once you have the research agent join your team, how does the next part work? Do they do research for you continually until you tell them to stop or or do you have to go back to the agent periodically to start up another research project?
If the agent gets "stuck", does the RP gain stop until the agents mission is completed? How do you tell if the agent is stuck?

Once you got the research agent you just accumilate rp until you use them to buy datacores.
Yes he wll continue to research forever until you tell him to stop (which will destory all rp if you do that). One of my corp members came back after a extended absence and found out he had over 200k in rp and made over 100 mil from it.
As far as I know this is the case, the mission must be completed before the agent can continue. The agent will sent you an evmail if I can recall correctly.

Edited by: Vertex Eisenstein on 06/10/2008 14:55:40 They operate continuously until you tell them to stop, even if your standings with them fall below the required level for them to talk to you (this means that you cant cash in though, as has happened to me recently).
They never actually get stuck, although the wording of the mail they send you makes it sound like research has stopped. The mail is just an invitation to do their daily mission, the sole purpose of which is to give you double RP for that day. I got the mail the first time and flew dozens of jumps to do the mission. For the second agent I got I didnt do any missions and just ignored the mails. I continued gaining RP with that agent anyway.
Once you ignore a mail form them they wont send you any more, but you can still do the daily missions if you feel like it. Most people just let them run passively though and go back every few months for an ISK injection. I have never bothered to cash mine in due to standing issues and last time I checked there was nearly half a billion worth of cores waiting to be collected. Time for some standing grind again I think!
Quote: As far as I know this is the case, the mission must be completed before the agent can continue.
This is incorrect. Loraen is totally right, barring new mission content in the last big patch.

Each Agent has several specialties.
What I did was go to EVE Agents.com and search for Agents that had the Skills I needed and were close to where I operated.
You have to train one of the skills they have before they will work with you. Then, the higher you train that skill the more RP you will get per day from that agent.
However, there are also the same standings requirements to speak to an R&D agent, as any other agent. So Connections helps here at getting access to a better agent.
The Higher the Agent's level and quality the more RP you will get per day.
As doing the daily mission effectively doubles the RP you get from the agent it is well worth while.
Mostly what I've seen is them wanting you to fetch them 300 units of Tritanium or run a Courier Mission. Sometimes the Courier Missions might go into lo sec - so look out for that. I just put some WCS's on a tough frigate and some extra shields and used that guy as my Intruder. No problems so far.
As to the original question about how many - you can only work with one R&D agent at a time unless you've got the Research Project Management skill mentioned above but - it is a 40 Mil ISK skill. As each of the Science Skills the R&D agents require you to have is 10 Mil ISK ea., in order to maximize a character's ability to acquire Data Core's would require an investment of about 100 mil ISK, if you wanted different skills. Whether or not you could go to six different agents that all researched the same skill I don't know. I don't see why not but I don't have the skill so I can't try it. The other factor in that is that you'd be hard pressed to find that many agents all near enough to each other to let you run their missions each day. Thus, YES - you can run more than one R&D agent at a time - but - there are some financial and astral distance complications to doing so.
Of course, another complication in doing something like that is whether you are actually going to use the Data Core's yourself for Invention or just sell them off. If you're really going to use them yourself then locating agents who have the specific skills you need at some practical distance is another factor.
On top of all that - is whether or not you're going to try and do anything else.
If you just have one agent and you can set up shop to do what you want to do near their base, then that daily mission is no big deal. If they're some distance away it really becomes a grind to jump out there and jump back every day before doing the other things you want to do.
I've heard several other posters say that you don't really have to do those missions. But doing them DOES effectively double your RP/day, so it ends up being your call as to how much of a PITA they are.

At least some of the skill books drop as loot and you can sometimes find them listed on the market for a lot less than 10 million each. As a poorish newbie it's definitely worth cruising through a couple of regions, checking the market tab. Doing this can save you five million or more per skill book.

a question on a similar theme. I have been running four agents for well over twelve months. In the last week or so one of my agents only says that they cannot hear my transmission every time I ask for datcores off them. Any ideas as to why this one agent does this, whilst the rest happily hand over their datcores??

As mentioned above, if your status with the agent has changed they won't talk to you any more. Thus while they will continue researching your project based on your earlier conversation with them - they won't deliver your RP to you. The solution here is to change your status with them. If you do a show info on the agent you can see what your status with that agent is.
The Skills Social and Social/Connections will help with this but there may be other more specialized Social Skills that might help as well. Social/Diplomacy will help with agents that are considered hostile because of your standing with their faction.
Also, you want to make sure you are in the right base. If you have an outstanding mission for an agent they may be listed in one base as an "agent of interest" but not actually accessible unless you go to their base.
