I used to be a pretty die-hard overclocker but haven't spent any time in the field the past 18 months. Just now we had a fairly epic battle with loads of ships exploding but I didn't saw most of it due to my pc throwing a hissy fit.
The rig I have now is this:
core 2 duo 1.86ghz, asus p5b, 2gb ddr-2, ati x1950pro
..and it reverted to a 1 FPS slide show where others were reporting a much more reasonable 10-20fps. Any easy way of upgrading this rig? Or should I just wait till christmas then get myself an entire new rig? Budget is limited. (6-700 quid)
tia.

if u have the option available which u mention then wait and get the whole new rig, as it will further gear u for future stuffs, rather than just patching it for now.

Swap out the graphics card. Even a HD4670 would be a decent upgrade and doesn't cost much. Also, C2D processors are easy to overclock. Is it an E2*** series? Because they are fantastic overclockers which you should get over 3 GHz on.

Spend a few quid on a decent fan (If it fits in your case get a Tuniq Tower (those things are monsters)) and overclock the shit out of your CPU.
In big ass fleet fights you may need to turn the detail and some effects down and zoom out, that should help a bit aswell.
For 6-700 quid you can get yourself a decent base rig (provided you already have a decent monitor).
Your p5b is still a decent mobo, you could quite easily replace the cpu and gfx, and get more ram and be good to go for a while yet (although it does depend a bit on what model of P5B you have). =============================================

I turn off 'premium content', turn off all effects (absolutely everything), turn off cache, shadows to off, re-set cache.
When we had that fleet battle against Tri last week (I was still in Daisho at that time), I suffered a few secs lag while all the drones loaded at the gate and then got a constant 40-50 fps throughout the battle. True, I normally get 180+ in space, falling to 60 ish when doing a intensive mission so 40-50 aint that much I suppose. I dont have a high-end rig, my drivers are all last years version and I have a lowly 8800GTs card. Anyway, it cant do you any harm to do what I do, it can only help.

The only thing about Eve i didn't have tweaked yesterday was the 'no brackets' thing, everything else was tuned for performance.
If I wanted to upgrade this rig, what would be the best way to go..a faster CPU or a faster GFX card? Which makes the most difference in a fleet fight? I'm really torn between a quick solution so I can enjoy the game here, now, and waiting a few months and getting a new rig :(

You can choose to upgrade the videocard now (a ATI HD4850 or HD4870 would be excellent choices) but you'd run into a CPU bottleneck pretty quickly. However, it will give you a performance boost, even with that bottleneck. If you then purchase a new rig later (without a videocard) you can swap the card over and enjoy even speedier EVE, because you eliminated the earlier bottleneck.

Best bet now is getting a new vidcard..the HD4870 (Or dare i say X2 :P) is an excellent bang for buck card and fully up to date. Eventhough EvE seems way less sensitive regarding what kind of vidcard you have it will still help a bit.(Fleetfights with nice effects turned on will always be leaking massive fps somehow)
Your chipset supports quad C2D cpu's and DDRII 800 (you say you have 2gigs of ram, running Vista or XP64 by any chance?) And conciddering their prices are always dropping it's a best choice to upgrade those aswell if you're not running DDRII 800. Get 2 gigs extra in case of Vista or XP64 bit. No need for an entirely new rig although the only extra would be a new MB, it still means a fresh install of the system and all the time involved with that + that new MB's are quite expensive if you're aiming for the latest chipsets.
Besides as pointed out earlier; most C2D's are excellent overclockers if you're happy with it anyways. Otherwise just research the max supported cpu for your board and you're good to go on a shopping spree. ___________

Definitely get a new video card. Your CPU is fine. You said you've overclocked in the past, so it should be no problem for you to get a few extra Hz out of your CPU. I know well that C2D CPUs are excellent overclockers.

I never doubted but there are some around You can still buy 2 gigs extra (dual channel) only one bank will be left unused..or get 1 gig DC. ___________

What ppl said here mostly. More recent video card would help, it seems the dx9 engine makes better use of it. Some inexpensive tweaking to your CPU. You didn't mention your hard drive but you might consider something faster on that respect, worked for me.
Although you can build a pretty decent box on the budget you mention i'd suggest to save some more for extra bang and longevity.

I think I'm gonna keep this one for a little longer then in a few months buy a new rig and overclock the old one to use for secondary pc.
