Ok so I decided to drop by a belt in a 0.8 system for a giggle and ended up at it with no roids and no rats. Just as I was about to warp to the next 2 rats spawned.
1 was a normal Guisteria (or whatever they are called, the rats in Caldari space) and another was the Dread variaty. They were easy kills and the drop was pretty good (least for me) 1k faction assault missiles and a tag, the salvage was bugger all but anyways.
The real question here is how much to system sec level impact on the chance of good 'drops'? I know lower sec status means more bounties and 'harder' rats to kill but no-were does it state anything about their drops that I can find.
Logic dictates that yes it is a factor so pretty much I'm wondering if 0.5 systems are decent for someone that can only fly a Kessie as the biggest ship possible at present? Or is it generally deemed 'too tough' for a frig to take on 0.5 belt rats and still make a decent profit as opposed to level 1 mission running?
Any assistance would be great regarding this and I hope I have asked in the right forum.
Regards

Edited by: Ghe on 10/10/2008 10:57:16 afaik system security and region dictates which rats can spawn. the bounties and loot is not tied directly to the system sec, but to the rat spawning, lower sec spawns tougher rats, with more bounties (and different loot table?).
So in short, system security has not a direct impact on drops, but have in the way that the tougher rats generally have a better loot table.
The dread variant that spawned is a faction commander, which has a good chance of dropping faction items, in my experience this is often just some faction ammo and a dog tag, but can drop some really nice goodies (for instance pirate implants, faction ship BPCs and such)
In high sec only frig sized rats spawn (exept for hauler spawns), there should be no problem ratting in a frig, jumping in a destroyer would make the ratting much easier tho and dont require that much more training, also gives room for salvager/tractor for faster looting
These faction rats can be very worthwile hunting for a low SP pilot especially when comparing to lvl 1 missions

Thanks for that info.
I'm more than likely going to do some ratting in 0.5 and occasional jumps to 0.4 systems (generally cos they are linked by a single jump so if I get bored I can just jump there).
I am about 3 or so days off of getting a cruiser and able to equip it (skill wise, not getting it until I can equip it how I want and skills do justice).
I'm guessing once I have got this ship up and running 0.4-0.3 shouldn't be much of a problem if I keep my eyes peeled for other players in bigger ships than me/much older. Just gotta keep a watch out for nasty spawns I guess.
Thanks again

Ratting in a Kestral in 0.5 is no problem and that is only with a civillian shield ( I actually find it easier than in a destroyer ). Just fit 4 launchers and it will take care of them easy. I am ratting 0.5 and 0.6 and by the time my hold is full from loot I can make around 250,000 Isk after bountys and selling the loot in a local station, if I am getting bad prices then I will re-process and sell it as Ore.
Ratting in 0.4 gets quite a bit tougher, not only are the rats tougher but I have been jumped by pirates on quite a few occasions even though I am scanning all the time, you wont stand a chance against most of these as they will scan you and see if your an easy target, your cruiser will last about 3 sconds |

Another point, your probably better off stocking 10 Kestrals close to 0.4 than buying 1 Cruiser (it will be destroyed), for the price of the cruiser + insurance you can have a fully stocked hanger in the station so when the inevitable happens your ready to go straight away again.
I will be using a cruiser for missions and a Kestral for 0.4 untill my skills are way higher. |

Try to find an 0.5 system with a lot of belts away from the major trade routes.
In one such system in Amarr space a faction ship dropped a Med Sansha Control Tower BPC, which I sold on contract for a bit over 100M isk. It quintuled my net worth, and I used that to get into trading.
At this point in your career, ratting in 0.5 sec will do you better than Level 1 missions, ratting in 0.4 and below will certainly get your adrenalin pumping.
