I see a lot of nanoships move through my home system in ones and twos, looking to catch ratters in a belt. I like killing nanoships an awful lot, but it's hard to get these guys to engage anything that isn't obviously a ratting ship.
To that end, I've been wondering if anyone has tried using a Raven with heavy energy neuts in the highs to give belt-ganking nanoships some suprise *********. My notion was to have a Raven sitting in a belt and pretending to rat with recon support cloaked nearby.
I'm specifically curious about a few things:
- Precision cruise missiles. Worth bothering with, or pointless against the almighty nano? If so, I'd just use straight-up Caldari Navy ammo. - Two or three heavy e-neuts? Two heavy neuts will instantly drain the cap of interceptors, but I'm wondering if it's enough to ruin a HAC's day. - ECM drones or more DPS? - What sort of tank would be wise to squeeze on here? Since heavy neuts are cap-intensive, I'm sort of leaning towards a passive buffer tank. Obviously a cap booster and a warp disruptor are needed, so that's two slots gone right there. - Is this notion even viable? I'd expect to see more ships like this if it was.
Thanks for your input!

Precision cruises will absolutely SHRED nanoships, provided you can stop them running away. Even with all their cap neuted, they'll often have enough speed to cruise out of point range and warp away, easily surviving the one or maybe two volleys that will catch them.
So most of your plan will depend on which recon you buddy up with.
Rapier: Nano engages, you wait for a while, spamming cruises (which will probably bounce off if he's going flat out), then slam on the neuts while the Rapier decloaks and smacks the webs on. He will then explode.
Arazu: Similar, but you're relying on the nanoship being unable to get out of the Arazu's point range before his MWD fails. If he cannot get away, he dies.
Pilgrim: Yeah, good luck getting it into neut range. Curse is a no-go because if you cloak it you suffer calibration delay and the nanoship will run for the hills.
Falcon: Nanoship gets jammed. Nanoship runs away. Everyone gets to hear about a Falcon in system and the place empties faster than a KFC family bucket at John Prescott's house.
As for the drones: 3 sentry drones. Sentries rip nano's apart if they're foolish enough to hang around. ECM/damage drones won't be fast enough to do much until he's slowed down. At which point your missiles will be ripping him apart anyway.
You won't need a cap booster if you buffer tank. You can run 2 heavy neuts for 5 minutes solid on a full charge, which is more than enough. Target painter could come in handy though.
If you become a successful nano-killer in your area of space, expect to get a reputation for it fast. This will either attract a small blob or cause the targets to dry up completely, so be prepared to change tactics or location after a while. "I got soul but I'm not a soldier" |

I've not tried this tactic myself. Here are some guesses:
For recon support the best bet is likely a falcon. By the time a rapier uncloaks and locks it is likely the nano is gone.
Not much point worrying about precision cruise missiles. If they're going fast they're not webbed/neut'd which is the first issue.
2x neuts is usually fine. Ceptors take 1x neut often and they're hosed. A couple of cycles with even 1x neut on a nano that isn't paying that much attention will ruin their day (lost a rapier myself this way, *sniff*). Figure they're going in with maybe 60% cap anyways.
I'd either fit ecm or web drones. Probably ecm in case you've got to break a lock to warp off yourself when local fills with neuts.
The neuts don't need to be continually run imho. Once they're webbed they're toast. I'd try and put some sort of active tank.
The bigger issue is getting the web. For that the nano has to make a mistake. Easiest way is to setup the trap in the middle of an asteriod belt (doesn't require neuts). Hope the nano bumps a roid and practice pulsing the mwd. Get the web on and the nano is toast.
On the other hand a 2x neut and 2x web combo is likely an easier solution.
The other issue is most nanos don't try and take on a bs by themselves. Usually the first one is a scout/tackle. Then you've got to worry about the dozen nanos behind that.
This tactic isn't used much as it requires waiting for the nano to attack. The best tactic to go after nanos is to use more nanos.

Another amusing thing that you can do is put a bubble up on your station in line with the gate they normally come out of. Fit up a plated phoon and sit by the bubble. When the scout hits the bubble (which they will) you smartbomb the scout and his pod and dock.

Ed: Oh, and the reason I quoted that is because IMO RR BS gangs are the best things to do to nanos... but you certainly won't kill them all. --

Works well against ceptors and dictors. Nanos usually have enough shield buffer to not even notice the smart bombs. You might get some small stuff. Otherwise I agree 100% that ceptors/assault frigs/dictors should be the roaming ships of choice.
RR BS gangs aren't effective as the nanos usually recognize what is going on. Maybe a nano gets popped but the rest usually get away. A RR bs gang is too slow to pursue a nano gang and also must wait for the nanos to attack. Usually the RR bs gang and the nano gang pass each other mostly ignoring each other as there isn't much they can do. More likely that a bs straggler or two is popped if the bs gang attempt to move much.
The rr bs gang must commit. If a bunch of falcons uncloak or the nanos hot drop carriers, the bs gang is toast.

It depends on the "hot-drop", how the BS gang is tackled etc...
And bring some armor tanked, ECCM fitted cruise ravens to counter both nanos and falcons with one "shot"...sometimes popping even one opponent instead of no-one, or losing none of yours in what your enemies conceived as a good trap is a victory...
Also remember that a single "standard-fitted" nano-boat loss could equal to 2-3 or even more insured RR BS (after insurance). So "just one kill" is more than it sounds Join the Biggest Greek Corp! www.Mythos-eve.com - Join Mythos Channel in game! |

all you need is 1 neut, mwd, web (overloaded if pos).
just neut the nano, burn at him, web, dead
