Hello . Had one of the best fights ever last afternoon in Archee (0.4) which ended in the destruction of a Rorqual and a Thanatos ransom.
The fight began when a Rorqual was spotted on the directional scanner in Archee, a 0.4 system that has no station and is also a lowsec pocket, stuck between two high sec systems. A scout was sent in to investigate, probes it and finds the Rorqual on its own at a safespot, no POS or cloak. There is also a load of mining and combat ships on the Archee gate in Bawlilan from the same alliance.
We (A bunch of PvP corporations around the Archee area) assemble a nice gang of 2x Dominix, Typhoon, Sleipnir, 2x Ishtar, Falcon, Drake and Taranis to have a crack at the Rorqual. Eventually we get setup in a neighbouring system, jump in, warp to our scout and the Rorq is tackled. The combat ships on the Archee gate jump in warp to the rorqual to engage us, a Thanatos uncloaks and joins them shortly after. We have RR BS while they don't so we manage to keep eachother alive while their support drops, we almost lose a Dominix but fortunatly by the time he was deep armor we had removed most their DPS. A few of the pilots came back in different PvP ships after they lost theirs, nice fighting spirit .
Eventually the support is cleared and we get to work on the Rorqual, he begged for a ransom in local but we didn't spot it fast enough as he dropped a lot quicker than expected. He was mostly unfitted with only a LARGE armor repair for tank . Finally, we get to work on the Thanatos who convo's our FC and agrees to pay a 800mil ransom for his survival. GF to everyone involved.
The Engagement
Here are some nice screenshots. Thanatos Ransom from the Thanatos Rorqual Wreck
Total Kills: Rorqual, 2x Drake, Ferox, Caracal, Blackbird, Cormorant, Hawk, Nighthawk, Hurricane, Sleipnir, Cyclone, Hyperion, Deimos.

Id have killed the thanny. 800mill is way more then the basic insurance and a t2 fit. wonder what he saved with that ransom?

From an after fight convo with the pilot it was mostly t2 (he may have paid too much, then I did my best to to give him time to think it thru ). I just don't believe in 2 billions fittings in carrier (if anything they'll have t2 rigs which don't drop). Nowadays carriers aren't pimped that much, most people seeing more value in a spare one than in a pimp killmail. ISK wise I think it was the best for both parties involved.
My only regret is not ransoming the Rorqual too, he asked for one in local but I didn't read it before it was too late. That and due to being almost unfitted it dropped very fast not giving us much time to think it thru
The ship scanner is definitely a good idea but the gang was assembled very hastily (I only flew with Suitonia before, it was the Drake pilot almost first PvP experience), and the Rorqual was scanned by the Falcon who could not spare a midslot.
The killboard view gives the impression of a very one sided engagement but it was a bit harder, 2 of our ships hit hull, including the Falcon from a Manticore not shown on the killboard due to surviving (A Raven was there also and escaped too). And had we lost one of the domi (it was close to hit hull) it could have gone differently.
PS: Thanks for primarying me I lost almost no sec status

Primary me next time! I spent the morning and last evening ratting in Outer Ring to get my sec back .
went from -2.37 to -3.96 for that single fight. The ship kills in a 0.4 system are about 40-50% worse than they used to be. -2.87 on average per ship kill according to my security status log.

And in further development, The Sleipnir pilot of yesterday cashed his killright on my Vaga before its CCP set obsolescence date. Some polys I won't have to wonder how to replace them .

you should put a ship/cargo scanner on the scout cov ops. I sometimes so this, that way you know how much to ask for when you ransom someone,
cap ships are often uninsured in empire as people don't expect to lose them, you could be right though. A ship/cargo scanner is excellent to have when ransoming.

Fighters. We popped three so he got them back in but at that point he had his last lock . The Falcon did a damn fine job (stealth nerf whine).

it certianly is :).
this was a gret fight, for saying we pulled the gang together in about 15 minutes from disparate friendly corps we did well.
oh and i finally managed to shoot some of the hail thats been in my cargohold for good reason and not because i'd used everything else up.
WTS 1x capital tractor beam I, one not very careful owner, slightly damaged.

I'd logged on for a skill change and was about to log when the cyno appeared in local. went to have a look and spotted the rorqual, it moved to a safe so whilst the gang was being put together probed it down, also found the carrier too.
left system to switch jammers, always carry 3 of each, and jumped back in to make a couple of jamming points and the warp in for the gang.
In warps the gang and the fights on, i had the carrier jammed about 60-70% of the time, rarely missed 2 cycles together and jammed various others. Finally they got smart and got a ship close to me, just i put both caldari jammers on the raven and nighthawk just as the manticore started firing, the 15s wait for jammers to cycle seemed to last forever as the cruise hit and took me into low armour, bleeding into hull.
I'd thought about a ship scanner, had one in hold, but didn't dare swap out a jammer as we were outnumbered at the start of the fight and needed all the help we had.
Space Techno1ogies seem a bit irritated by this and have been trying to inact killrights. Bring it gentlemen.

Nice kill, corp mate of mine saw the Rorqy and your crew on scanner. Seems that area was particularly full of clever people that day because a solo freighter was also finding out why low-sec travel can be costly.
