OK, so it apears that if an NPC rat in a belt targets/attacks before drones are launched then the drones will not automatically attack the rat. Is there a way to make the drones automatically attack a rat even if they attacked before drones are launched?

I believe they will attack at some point. No, there si not, a far as I know. Just release drones, target your npc, issue attack command. Also you can use shortcuts.

You can also set them to auto-aggro, but how one does this I have not yet learned!

im not sure they will eventually attack, i sat in the belt for about 20 mins watching the rats shoot me and they just orbitted paying no attention to rats.
I did see a vaque refernece to setting drones to agressive vs. passive on my searching for this, but no info on how to set this and saw nothing in the settings window (not even sure if it still applies as it was an old post).

Click the options 'white traingle' in the top left corner of the drones window.
I can't remember the exact text, but you click the option to configue the drones, then you can set to aggressive.
Still not 100% proactive, but it's better. Hope this helps.

"Focus on target" and "Aggressive" are the appropriate options, I think.
My drones too played cards while rats shooted, but now they do their job nicely

Even when set to agressive, if everything is already aggroing you before they are launched they will attack nothing. You'll have to start the ball rolling yourself.
If you launch them before you are attacked they will defend as usual.
The difference between passive and agressive is that they will not respond automatically in passive mode. This is useful for maintaining control in missions, stopping them doing whatever the hell they like. You do have to keep bossing them about though.

Aggressive mode means they will automatically move to the next target....it won't get them hitting the first target though. To do this you need to a) start shooting a target with guns/missiles/lasers or b) right click on the drone or drone group and tell them to engage target.
Once they've finished on whatever you told them to (by shooting something or telling them "engage target"), they'll move on to the next target. In my experience the artificial intelligence seems to follow a pattern seeking the lowest bounty target and working upwards - but I have no proof that this is actually what they do.

Couple of extra pointer for you;
Assign æshortcut keysetsÆ to your drones, I use [Ctrl] + [E] to æengage targetÆ and [Ctrl] + [D] to return them to the drone bay. Handy if you see them loosing shield in the fight.
I also have my targets æAligned VerticalÆ on the right side of the screen next to the overview window, that way I can quickly click a target to change æfocusÆ (the rotating triangles change to the clicked target) then hit my keyset so the drones engage the selected target.
I found the above useful when encountering fixed guns or launchers (in cosmic anomalies); I can target them and send my drones to take them out while I get on with destroying the rats. Just keep an eye on your drones and bring them home if they start taking damage.
