So, I've been thinking about this ever since a friend of mine took forever to get a name he wanted. I understand that the random name generator is there..but if the player base keeps growing this is really going to be your only option, except for abbreviated names and extra letters.
The idea I want to throw out there is this =
Paid name change - cost about 20-40 USD. You can only do this once every 6 months per account. The reason for so long (hell I'd even want it longer) Is to not let scammers or others take advantage of this. which is why I'd like another feature.
When your character changes its name a space will go into employment history saying "so-and-so was formerly know as so-and-so before this date.
This can help with corp thieves or other people that want to abuse it. When you check someone out it will say their former name and if they scammed you once its obvious. This is also a way for people to start over that may hate their name or would like to switch names with an alt. Maybe other than just figuring out a new name you can switch names with an alt on that account only.
I can see some of the problems with this. How will standing reflect and corp privileges. When a name is changed role and responsibilities should be stripped and then have to be reset by CEO or someone with that power. Standings and everything should just carry over if possibile. I'm still trying to get new ideas about it, but its a nice option to have in a game like this and also creates more income for CCP hint* hint*.. I know its difficult to do in this game, but I think its possible with a good set of limitations and rules. This is still a game and think someone should have the option of changing their name at least once.
Please discuss. Would like some feedback on it. Thnx in advance

This! It would actually encourage me to buy people like "Mr. SK23012rus"... ------------------------------ Adding bounty will not make it easier to kill me. |

no. my only way of knowing who you are is by your name.
if you change it, i cant recognize you on site.
lets say our OP, shaun Ronin, ganked my hulk two weeks ago.
if shaun ronin turns up in a belt i was in in a dessie, di isntantly start warping out.
but if shaun ronin changed his name to k'amir shar, and turned up in a dessie, i wouldn't know it was him, and wouldn't warp out. clearly, this is broken, people in this game take responsibility for their actions, because other players remember it.
that fact that it says in his character sheet he was formally shaun ronin is neither here nor there, i need to recognize him on sight. if your name is that bad, that you totally cant stand it, make a new char, sell your old one. - PvPers always say "GB2WoW". the message is that EVE is hard, and people just need to deal with it. wasn't it funny how when nano's started making it hard for *them*, that all went out the window? |

The problem you speak of here is why I said to have a 6 month period or more until you can do it again.
No one is gonna pay to change their name just so they can gank someone at a belt. Not to mention your standings would stay the same to this person regardless of name change(which should be implemented regardless). I dont know who else does this, but I set standings to people all the time and I go with the color red to wrap out not just their name.
Saying no to a name change option just to see people names that ganked you isn't a strong enough argument not to do it. thats what standings are for.

this, want, please.
also, if it is possible, it could change all history records of that char too, so if you look at your kills and loses, it accounts for name changes. __________________________________________________ |

It could be tied into character transfers, the first time a person logs in with his new acquisition he gets a prompt asking if he wants to change the name.
I would like CCP to enforce a naming policy first though, far too many seemingly random names out there as well as all that silly '1337' speak *******s.

dude, i have a chap in my address book who ganked my over a year ago. if he turned up in system, i would dock immediately.
6 months isnt good enough. i guess i MIGHT be satisfied with a once only change, to correct horrible names chosen when you didn't expect to play beyond the trial period.
i could grudgingly accept that. - PvPers always say "GB2WoW". the message is that EVE is hard, and people just need to deal with it. wasn't it funny how when nano's started making it hard for *them*, that all went out the window? |

Only if the name change is also recorded in player's description, like an employment history. You want to know who this person used to be, and have that old name searchable. People could do a massive corp theft scam, change their name, and be impossible to ever find again.
Either that or we introduce an entirely different concept of identity and meta-gaming into EVE, where name changes, plastic surgery and all of that espionage stuff is part of the game.... ___ My views may not represent those of my corporation, which is why I never get invited to those diplomatic parties...
