^ This ^ It just silly that space ships looks like ground tanks. And ships looks cheap, despite the fact those models aren't cheap at all.

Yes the paint is not all that good on them, if I ever get one I will make it the bare bones version and paint it myself to be in line with whatever version I wish it to be

You're right of course. CCP went the cheap route. Rather then make the Fleet Tempest panels accurate, they just did a slightly different, though no less boring paintjob to their standard Tempest model.
I was at the house with Mechakucha Kusari when he unboxed them for the photos. The panel issue was the first thing I noticed. He was very dissapointed as well.

That's actually a good point.. But there's no painting that could be considered "tactical" since you lock onto a ships signature radius.. So the camo painting is probably just to state that it's a military vessel..

haahahahahh. I know that I have done that when going through screen shots of eve. Not only that but tried to open up various menus and thinking "wtf, lag???".
Okay about my post above that was quoted a few times. I'm sure theres going to be several others that agree.
The issue with the models is the grotesque paintjobs. Sure, maybe they are hand painted but as someone that has played, collected and painted his own minis for a tabletop wargame, in this case Battletech, others have also done the same. I think we will all agree that any noob with a massive paint brush could have done the paint jobs on these models in no time.
Being a nerd gamer, i have been to shops with resin models that were around $50 and up. The price for the models, while high aren't completely alien. However I would expect the paint job to be higher quality. If CCP were to make unpainted models and sell them for less(whatever ccp is paying for the paint job), they would probably get a warmer reception.
Personally I like the idea of CCP making models of the ships and I hope that enough people buy them. Enough people to get CCP to decide to add onto the line. Personally I would like to have a Ferox model but a smaller sized one then these massive looking models. Something about the size of a brick, no more.
While I understand the studio shots of the models I have to say that one of the posters above makes a good case. CCP should have shown some sitting on their desk before putting out the studio pics of the models. Some could say the models were grossly misrepresented.
More models, maybe smaller, lower priced but no paint jobs unless its a something simple like black or grey.

I must agree the paint jobs make them look awful, except for the Ammarian ship, Silver looks ok, but what the hell went wrong with the others? Looks like someone's been throwing buckets of random coloured paint at the ships. Navy Mega ingame is dark and sinister looking, not this jolly green crap. ==================================================

Indeed. Can we get internal affairs to hound the guys who choose the company that does store items like models and stuff? Maybe get them to do some QA before the models are at mass production level? Tbh if I was CCP I'd send a bunch of predatory class action suit lawyers over to the ****ups who made these monstrositys and scare the bejesus out of them or even get them to *gasp* put out a quality product.
C'mon CCP you can do better.

LOL! Kind of going in order...
The Apoc is probably the best one of the bunch, the paint job looks like it is fairly close to what we see in game... Unfortunately, I've seen more Paladins than the Navy versions of this ship. The darker steel color sets off the brighter silver top quite nicely and the different plates are separated out much like what has happened with the new skins in the game.
Not sure if it is a conglomerations or not of two different models, but I really don't remember seeing the sharp projection on the top of the left wing of the Raven, and remember it being somewhat rounder. A few of the smaller spines or antennae didn't make the mold and that's a bit of a shame. The paint job is a few shades too light from what I remember of this ship in the game. Would've liked to have seen the various tubing have a bit more definition to it, especially in the nose of the craft. Otherwise, I'm fairly happy with it.
With the Megathron, the real downer is that the shades of green used for the paint job, make the model look more toy-like and well, overly plastic looking. Really loved the molding work that was done on this one, and have to say that the details that are well, hidden by a poor paint job really take a vast amount away from what is arguably one of the sexy ships in the game.
Sigh... Dyson summed it up best, "disappointed..." I understand that the modeling/molding of Minmatari ships is very difficult due to the amount of piping, spires of various types and the different paneling, let alone the vast amount of delicate work to be done on the overall construction, but still... This model should have had more detail to it than what it has, and more open air parts to it, vs. the solid construction of the three spires leading from the "main body" of the ship, itself. Kind of a shame that whoever did the modeling/molding work for the Megathron didn't have a repeat with the Tempest.
Lastly, they don't seem to be in scale to one-another, with the Raven being a bit smaller than the rest, and the Apocalypse being larger than what it should be relative to the other models.
Maybe the might look to a different group of casters, maybe "Reaper?" Viper Warhawk for CAV
It'll be interesting to see who CCP uses for their miniatures based game when and if it comes out... Diplomacy hiding in plain sight... |

Respectfully, can I suggest you take the pictures again?
Get some ideas to make a "neutral" (black for starters) backdrop from here: http://www.foundvalue.com/how-to/b/ebay-photo-studio http://www.raydobbins.com/photosetup/photo7.jpg
From my own experience in photography use a basic light setup: Adding to what the links suggest, use three lights not two. This is the way to get "control" of the final image.
- First one is the "main light" which illuminates the ship from left, right, bottom, bottom left, right back, etc., from where ever "the system sun is". Play with the lights. - Next is the general "fill" light, which provides general overall illumination to the ship. This one can be at the top or bottom. - The third light is also a fill light but a faint one that will put light where the main light provokes darkness.
In terms of wattage power: First light is (say) 100 watts Second light is 50 watts Third light is 25 watts
If you use same wattage light bulbs then use distance: First is (say) one foot away Second is two feet away Third is three feet away.
You don`t have to use special photo lights, any house lamp or even an electric extension with a light bulb attached to one end will do. Only make a kind of reflector to direct most of the light, from any shiny material like aluminum foil. Take into account when doing this that the reflecting surface must be the same in all three light to have better control of them.
Do not use the built in camera flash. Your camera as most this days, is a point and shot and that includes a flash that doesn`t ask if its needed. Flash will flatten your pics, even more if they are at such close distance. Because it is digital and you won`t be spending on film, you can try several times to improve the images without any damage to your pocket. So subdue or cover the flash completely and use a setup with a backdrop and light bulbs as suggested. You`ll see a dramatic change in the image quality of the ships image.
Tips: -Avoid mirrors - better rotate the ship -Avoid distracting background - use a neutral backdrop -Set the enviroment - use dark "space like" background (later you can create backdrops with planets or asteroid belts or whatever) -(Try to hide the plastic setup base) -Shot in a dark room or at night so you have complete light control. -Try shooting as near as possible in some pics to give sense of "big" size. Some can be out of focus but then... that is artistic effect -Want it shinny? Oil it with a light personal (hands) oil. -Want it shinny in some places only? Oil it in those places only.
Taking pics of things we like in a controlled situation is most rewarding, even more this days we don`t have to wait for the image to come out.

CCP do away with the hand painting and sell us them unpainted for less. Even an unpainted model would look much better than these and then the buyers can decide whether to paint theirs or not.
I collect warhammer and the painting of the model is part of the fun, but a proper good quality paint job takes hours, especialy on models of that size and hand painted models on a mass scale don't work. |

^This. Sell these pre-painted ones for a higher cost, as 'Special Editions' or 'Limited Edition' models. Then sell mass-produced unpainted models for a lower cost. I would sooo pick up an unpainted Hurricane and maybe a Crusader/Malediction if those came out.
And I think maybe those camo patterns would look better if they were simply scaled down a lot. -------

Edited by: Shogun Archer on 21/11/2008 18:01:45 Unpainted and unassembled would be optimal. Get a company like Tamiya or Dragon to make model kits of these. As it stands now they just look like cheap Fischer Price toys.
I am a professional photographer, and I do have to say that the OP's pics make them look even worse with the overpowered uncontrolled flash and lighting. Still, you can tell the models themselves aren't that high quality. I doubt they are that bright though. |
