I have recently bought this months edition of PcGamer magazine and was reading through the Readers top 100. I was happy to read that EVE Online reached number 2. Only missed being first due to the stubbon nature of the crowbar weilding scientist who wont get of the top spot. (I adore the game dont get me wrong.
I cant scan the page in at work so the top 5 are:
1. Halflife 2 2. EVE Online 3.LOTRO 4. WoW (HAHA you suck) 5. COD4

This tbh, although HL2 had the graphics.. the original Half-Life just had an awesomely unfolding story, the carnage was there, the mystery... and the fear when you hear some of the big enemies the first time (Garg, Tentacle).

HL2 had more story and variety. I prefer it, not for the graphics, but because you go from running around unarmed a la HL1 to leading a rebellion against War of the Worlds style robots, with equally myriad stops in between.
HL1 was great, but HL2 is better. |

Personally I think Deus Ex and System Shock 2 should permenantly be in the top 5.
Half Life 2 is amazing though, it is the zenith of it's genre.
I think it is difficult sometimes to compare games of such different catagories, Half Life 2 and EVE Online are brilliant in radically different ways.

Edited by: Wired on 23/10/2008 17:52:23 Kinda discussed HL1 v HL2 today.
HL1 had the cool black ninjas that only showed up in warehouses full of containers (how stereotypical)
HL2 had errr 'Barney'.
HL2 was a good game, but it wasn't as groundbreaking in the way that HL1 was.
edit: Gotta agree can't believe Deus Ex aint there. =============================================

Well done CCP.
I have not played HL2, so cannot comment, but HL1 was an awesome game. Everything seemed so new, even though a few parts were Quake ripoffs. Battlezone was my other favourite. Such a shame the sequel bombed. Quite undeservedly I thought, except for a couple of really annoying mission complete bugs.

Exactly you couldn't shoot him in HL2....unless you installed the 'shoot barney mod' =============================================

Edited by: Valuv on 23/10/2008 18:17:36 Half-Life 1 marked a significant step for FPS games. It was totally unexpected at the time. So in that respect, HL1 > HL2. Half-Life 2 however, has the benefit of more refined gameplay thanks to technological advances. So in that respect, HL2 > HL1.
One is a very historical figure which kinda made the genre what it is now, and the other one is just a better game, based on previous changes.
Back to topic, WTF is LOTRO/CoD4/WoW doing on that List?!

Because we view money as a measure of success. If the piece rakes enough papers, it does not matter whether or not it is a work of art.

13th place then.
Not bad, about a half a jump, eve normaly polls around about 30th place.
Guess people flooded the vote in eve's favour this year. Personaly id poll it in the 20-30th bracket, eve is far and away from being the perfect execution of the genre, were eve everything it says on the tin and played out as it's told without the fanboy tinted glasses firmly applied, top 5, no mmo could touch it for dust.

LOTRO was good and bad. The combat and UI were horrendously bad. The grind made me want to stab my hobbit's eyes out (think: EQ1). The "filler" quests were painfully uninspired. But the main "epic" quest and the environment were amazingly good. >>NERD ALERT<< I absolutely loved exploring ruins of the previous ages, finding places that I knew from the books, etc. Weathertop looked absolutely beautiful. The barrow-downs, the old forest, Rivendell, everything. The scenery was the best I've seen in any game, not graphics-wise, but content-wise. Exploring the ruin-covered country side had a feel to it that was indescribable. The main quest that you work on while you level up worked in tandem with Frodo's and the fellowship's quests, and it made immersion fairly easy.
But, number 3 of all-time it was definitely not. For all of it's virtues, the combat system and rickety UI are insurmountable. I suspect a slight bias in the audience polled.
but oh how I do miss finding a merry band of minstrel players that are trying to put on a little concert, running up to them with my cowbell and going DONKDONKDONKDONKDONKDONK in the middle of their song. (you could equip and play musical instruments with the 1-8 buttons)
And I agree, HL2 > HL1. If only for the antlion hormone sac thingy. <squishy squishy> And the laser-guided RPGs. |

I am glad that Eve got 3rd place, out of all the games I have played Eve-Online is the only one that has kept me for a long period of time, I just wish I had been here from beta .
Also, Swat 4 got 78th place, I wish it had received a higher place than that. People will probably totally disagree with me on that though.
Half Life 2 being better than Half Life 1, well that has me stumped. I love them both, 1 for being so far ahead for it's time and a great story, and then there is 2 with the great story again and excellent graphics and game play. |

According to the website, EVE is 13, not 2 or 3. Deus Ex got 2 (thank the lordy) and Team Fortress 2 got the number 1 spot. ------

I can't believe Blood Money made number 8. That is amazing.
I'm pleased with TF2 making number one, though. The non-existence of 2142 in the 100 was displeasing. But BF2 made it, and it is essentially a rehash of that. With all the corners cut off. |

I actually played TF2 (Orange Box) and obviously Eve as well(just to state an opinion of actually playing the game instead of voting to vote). How the heck did TF2 get #1? AvP2 rocks the socks off TF2 all day everyday. Unreal 2k4 wasn't bad either, personally imo better than TF2.
When I got the orange box I wanted to check out HL2 to see what this "paramount" game was all about. I must say It was pretty damn amazing. I then beat the two episodes and after that bought the HL1 big pack(it comes with blue and some other add ons) and beat that as well.
I think I may have been spoiled by the prettyness and advanced physics/AI of HL2 so although it wasn't amazing, it was still enjoyable. I tried to set myself as though the game just came out, for that time. Still I must say HL2 was more enjoyable than HL1. |
