Being new to EvE, and growing my skill portfolio under the guidance of some very wise corp members, I do have a few questions regarding transitioning into PvP play vs PvE. I fully understand that being able to do missions is NOTHING like PvP tactics and strategy. My questions aren't so much about load-ous for PvP play, as I know that's an entire forum of debate, but rather I am interested in undertanding how people FUND their PvP efforts. I know that ship loss is an ever present fact of life, and given the costs to replace ships and gear, I just don't know how this is accomplished, especially for the nublets like me that are looking to get their feet wet in PvP. |

People fund their PVP via PVE. Grind missions (mine, trade, whatever) during the week, pewpew during the weekend. Good player corps help with this, as the riches are spread around and you can get some help with expenses (and you help others too). |

Edited by: Tzar''rim on 23/10/2008 13:59:30 There's different kinds of PVP; solo, group, fleet, high sec, low sec, 0.0. They all have different requirements, different risks and rewards.
Most of the time doing things solo means you'll end up with a negative cashflow, some things like high sec piracy and low sec piracy (while more risk) can pay for themselves if you do it smart. Fleet warfare in 0.0 costs a lot and being inexperienced/dumb tends to hurt the wallet as well.
So there's several ways to fund you pvp;
- PVP, in case of piracy - PVE, mission running, mining (on an alt) - trading (on an alt) - ratting (only worth it in 0.0 mostly, although for younger players making about 20 mil/evening in low sec isn't bad). - selling GTC's - scamming, corp theft and other asshattery.
As you can see a lot of options use alts, either because you can't enter high sec anymore or because it's just easier to do it that way.

Good outline. This leads to another question regarding alts - since training on one prohibits training an alt at the same time, I can see that getting old quickly, unless you mean a 2nd account. oh hai. |

Well, it depends. Trading chars for instance do just fine right out of the box, so you can make 2 trading chars and put them in different hubs. That takes no training whatsoever. Mining/missions running takes 1-4 months depending on how far you want to take it. For a long term player those few months don't mean a whole lot so you could train an alt on the same account.
But yes, in reality having a second account makes life a lot easier. Even more since he can double as a covert ops scout, possibly as a Blackbird/Falcon alt and to haul your stuff around. Also because of it you can specialize your characters more, making them more powerful because of it.

good stuff above, i've found that recently i've been able to fund my PvP by PvP.
specifically using cheap, insureable ships and practice makes perfect. you can still fit frigates and cruisers well with t1 stuff, and be fully insureable. A loss is easy to replace not only in ISK terms but also the logistics of moving them. I've learnt more from my losses than any number of kills tbh.
Also, take a leaf out of Veto's (top pirate corps) book: ransoms earn more money than explosions, ransomed a couple of hulks for 50mil each recently as well as the one last night who ejected and left it in the belt for a friend to take. Either ransom the ship when it's in structure, or pop the ship and catch the pod. |

you can train a hauler alt on your main character with only a few hours and have him able to fly a mammoth with minmatar industrial 4, or the amarr one (bestower) and he can haul all ships up to battleship.
PvP is generally better in small groups (for me anyways) but solo is still possible despite all the naysayers who haven't got the imagination or patience to hunt people down. |

What about the use of clones to gain you the skill benefits of active character training and preserving your hard earned implants? Have you seen the use of clones to allow someone to effectively PVP and PVE without extended cost (2nd account) or prolonged training time (switching alts)? oh hai. |

Edited by: Tzar''rim on 23/10/2008 17:19:27 It really depends on what you're doing, if you do 0.0 warfare your sec. status won't drop so you can easily jump to a high sec clone for a few days and PVE a bit and then go back to 0.0, if you're a pirate such is not possible.
While using jumpclones is just a smart thing to do for various reasons a lot of people keep running into the "if only I had a 2nd character right now" thing. You don't NEED one perse and I'm sure there'll be lots of people replying now going "I only have 1 account", while that may be it's just so much easier to have a 2nd.

Most skills in Eve is either INT/MEM based or PER/WILL based, so a trick is to have two clones... one with a INT/MEM inplant set and one with a PER/WILL set.
Whenever you are changing to train a new skill, change to the appropriate clone and in case of a podding you only loose half a implant set.
This way it is possible to afford even +4 implants in a 0.0 clone.

Personally, I've found that trading, missioning and ratting provide me with sufficient income for PvP. I have a couple of other income sources, like writing for Eve-Tribune, as well. ______________________ Isn't it time you learned to fight back? Agony Unleashed Home of the PvP University.
