Sorry if this is a repost - i did some searching but couldnt find anything.
I've been dealing with some pretty poor framerates with the Mac client. My iMac should be more than capable, so I was wondering if anyone is running the game on Windows via Boot Camp and whether the performance is noticeably better.

iMac 2.8Ghz, 4Gb RAM 24" 256Mb VRAM. Currently with 2 clients running am getting 16fps and 27fps I am running the clients at reduced resolution as well to prevent them crashing (another topic).
In Bootcamp with 2 clients running at fullscreen I see between 30 - 50fps on both clients. Bootcamp is definitely faster in all aspects.

wow the difference is unreal. when the dock loaded my jaw dropped, the difference between the classic and the premium is insane, not only that, with all the setting maxed out i'm still getting 2 to 3 times the framerate than what i was getting on OSX with the Mac Client. it's too bad they can't get the Mac client up to par.
I think they should post a disclaimer to those using the Mac Client stating that the game experience between the two is really substantially different so that people know what they're getting. If i wasn't bored at work reading the forums i would have never known. |

bootcamp trumps the mac client hands down, and has done so since it was originally released. |

In my experience, the standard eve client works just as well under OSX as bootcamp. However, with bootcamp you can use the Premium version (though I'm not sure if all the features are available even under bootcamp).
However, shinier graphics do not justify my jumping out of OSX where I am doing everything else (I play EVE while I do other things throughout the day/night) just to play EVE and do absolutely nothing else BUT eve...

Anyone try to see if the enhanced graphics options will activate in a bootcamped eve client on the Mac?

Around 150fps under Bootcamp on an early 2008 Mac Pro with an 8800 and shedloads of RAM. 50fps or so under OS X. It just feels so much smoother Bootcamped but that's what I'd expect. --

Same. Smooth framerates with premium graphics in Boot Camp*, < 20 fps spinning in the station in OS X 10.5.5. I think it used to be better before I upgraded to Leopard actually.
2006 MacBook Pro, Radeon X1600.
* Tested situations include several 200+ battleship fleet ops.

The only downside I have, and why I go back and forth between using bootcamp and the mac client is that under bootcamp my fans on the macbook pro spin fast enough to initiate a small timewarp threshold. Under the mac client, things run smooth and quiet, and without the heat generation that occurs under bootcamp. Also, the battery lasts a lot longer the few times I can't plug in. ------------------------------------------------

What your are experiencing may be the fact that Apple's drivers run the video card at a lower clock speed (though Windows is more aggressive with the fan as well).

It's even simpler than that. EVE Classic is CPU limited and WINE/Cider has a pretty heavy overhead when it comes to EVE. The fan is for the GPU, and the GPU isn't getting a major workout when using the Mac client because it generates so few frames in the first place due to the aforementioned CPU limits. Once you switch over to bootcamp and shed the CPU load from WINE, the GPU ends up drawing more and warming up to the point where it needs additional cooling. ---- FREE Explorer Lead Megalomanic EVE Null-Sec Player Influence Map http://dl1.eve-files.com/media/corp/Veritefw/FWinf |

You mean native windows with native drivers running native windows client is beating down the cider (wine) wrapped and a bit modified windows classic windows client that is run on os x? :) Bootcamp is just a boot manager to boot between the two different operating systems. If you boot into windows you have windows running on PC hardware, if in OS X, you are in OS X running on PC hardware.
With Crossover Games on OS X I could run the native windows client with premium graphics and the performance was a many times faster than the cider wrapped classic client. Problem ofcourse is the cider (transgaming new name for their release of wine which is far behind). Had some weird pink 2D stations and stargates blown in the middle of the screen tho . Dunno if those were resolved already since switched back to the ccp released mac client.
And probably after getting a bigger hd gonna install windows to dualboot into so can actually play games till Apple can come up with some real solution for gaming platform on OS X instead of wine.
