And is empathy that important or can I leave that at like lvl 2 or so? 1 other question how do I get more cpu and power to equip more mods to my ship? Thanks... |

Empathy is used for Leadership, Trade, Social and Corporation Management skillsets. If you don't plan on training any of these then you don't really need much Charisma.
CPU: Electronics and Weapon Upgrades PG: Engineering and Advanced Weapon Upgrades
Electronics skillset tends to either give more CPU or lower CPU requirements for mods.
Engineering skillset tends to do the same but with powergrid. |

First things first : level represents the level you train a skill to (0,1,2,3,4,5), rank represents how many more SP you need for that skill (x1, x2, x3, ... , x14, x16).
Second, you need Empathy level 4 to train Presence, so most people eventually get it to level 4... EVENTUALLY, if they keep playing long enough, that is. All it does is increase the value of your charisma attribute, so if you don't plan to train any decent number of skills that have charisma as one of the two (primary or secondary) attributes, you could just as well not train it at all. The actual level at which you WANT to train it (and Presence too) depends on the amount of charisma-based skills you wish to train.
Third, train Engineering, Electronics, Weapons Upgrades to level 5 and Advanced Weapons Upgrades to level 4 (or even 5 if you can wait that long). That should give you PLENTY of PG/CPU whatever you want to fit. If you still don't have enough (even with "fiting mods" like Co-processors, Power Diagnostics or Reactor Control Units), or if for some reason you don't want to use fiting mods at all, you might want to consider getting a PG2/4/8 or a KMB-25/50/75 implant in slot 6 to help you even further (1/3/5 to PG/CPU).

Important? Yes. Important right now? Not really. If you never train a single trade, leadership, or social skill, not important at all.
Eventually you'll want the basic learnings to 4 or 5 and advanced to 3 or 4. Personally, I've got all basic to V and advanced to IV, with Int and Per advanced to V. I did this when I was about a 6 month old character. I'm not sure if those two advanced to V have yet paid off, and I'm over 2 years old now. Also note that when I started you needed basic learnings to V to train advanced, so many older players have them to V as an artifact of those older requirements.
4/3 (basics/advanceds) is minimum, I would recommend at least 4/4 eventually, perhaps even 5/4 if you plan on sticking around a while. However, get some other skills first. It sucks to be the guy with 28 memory. . . in a Merlin because you can't fly anything bigger. It's also painful to get the ISK for Advanced Learnings in a frigate, I wouldn't pursue those until you have a Cruiser and a decent fit. -------------------- Originally by: Crumplecorn

There's a limit to how much CPU and powergrid you can "add" to your ship via skills or modules. CCP balances the power of various ships by limiting CPU or powergrid on them, in addition to other things. At some point you just have to get a bigger ship.

In regards to your topic question, here's an exert from the skill training time faq that will help you make a decision:
Quote:
The Payoff: How high should you train the Learnng skills? Constantly debated is how worthwhile it is to train any of the 11 learning skills (especially the so-called Advanced learning skills) up to level 5. To summarize a few different threads of mine, the average ôpayoffö times for training the various learning skills are as follows:
- The Learning skill from level 4 to level 5: 243-406 Days (varies a lot player to player) - The five Basic learning skills from level 4 to level 5 (assuming Learning 5): 443 Days 11 Hours 41 Munutes & 12 seconds - The five Advanced learning skills from level 4 to level 5 (assuming Learning 5): 3 Years 235 Days 11 Hours 3 Minutes & 38 Seconds
These ôpayoffö times are defined as the total skill points invested divided by the average improvement in training speed.
What this means is that say you decided to train all of your basic learning skills from level 4 to level 5. Just over a year after training the basic learning skills, you would start to have more "effective" skillpoints than if you had trained another skill instead. Simply put, if you plan to play for more than a year, it's worth it to take your basic skills to 5. A year is pretty feasible in terms of character life, and most long term players will have their basics minus presence at least to level 5. Some people swear by the advanced skills to 5 as well, but that's just too long a payoff period for my tastes |

Misread last statement.
That said I have all my basic learning skills to lvl5 and given the above statement I have not wasted my time.

Install EVEMon and make a big skillplan, a couple of months at least. Then let EVEMon suggest learning skills. EVEMon will only add a learning skill to your plan if learning it will decrease overall skill training time. That said, I've got my basic at V and advanced at IV, but I kept switching between learning and other skills, as training learning is booooring. |

4/3 is a good target to head for but run up evemon and let it tell you 5/4 if your going to be here for a year or more 5/5 if you think your going to be here for 3+ years
but it's not that important really [I don't have all @ 5] |
