Haratu walked into the docking bay, his eyes roaming down a list of data collected from the region. He looked up only once as he approached the pilot's pod and that was to make sure he did not trip over a child's toy. He handed the datapad to Jon who placed it under his arm and began readying the pod for his master. "Could you please make sure your son stops leaving his toys around the hanger," Haratu said as he turned to be lowered into the pod, "it is a workplace hazard." "Sorry master," the slave responded, "He is only five." "It is still important to keep discipline, make sure he understands the importance of this place." Haratu paused as a harness was attached to his arm, "How is he doing in his studies?" "He has grasped the workings of the capacitor and should soon be able to serve on the ship, master." "That's good." Haratu relaxed as the ectoplasm began to enveloped him, "See you on the other side." "Sir." Jon said as he closed the pod, causing a rush of ectoplasm to envelop his master and send him spiralling into darkness.
Haratu trusted Jon, not because Jon was a slave, but because Jon had saved his life on numerous occasions. There was no one that Haratu trusted more than his slave, that was why he was the only one allowed near his pod, no one else was allowed to approach within ten metres of the pod except Jon and himself. If anyone wanted to kill him, he knew they would have to kill Jon first. Jon knew that as well.
Jon watched as the pod was raised into the belly of the ship to be connected. He stopped the crane for a second and quickly jogged over to wipe off a grease spot before jogging back and initiating the attachment proceedure again. he secured the pod and then walked up the ramp and into the hulking ship.
Haratu's mind jolted open with a rush, lights flashed and data began moving past his vision in a rush. He quickly orientated his mind to the ship and began sorting the system into organised groupings. The spip was finally operational after months of construction and years of planning. He aligned the codes with the station master and requested to undock. Soon he was gliding away from the Golden Amarrian station, the Dominix like a pregnant whale, its appearance a blob of carbonite and steel. Haratu activated the inbuilt hologram and attempted to interface with it. He opened his eyes to the bridge.
"Hello, Captain," Jon said as he turned around, "enjoying the ship?" The bridge was filled with bustle as the crew moved around trying to organise the new bridge for the projected misson, they stopped when they heard the word 'captain' and all turned to salute the hologram that had appeared in the corner of the room. Haratu moved down off the dias and looked out the window that spanned the front of the ship. "Where to, Captain?" the first mate asked. "Riavayed, I need to visit the university there and pick up some new drones, then set course for Shastal, we are going to do some manouvers in the City of God." "Kill some Sancha scum, Sir?" "Yes, make sure the tachyons are online, I want this ship ready for its weapons test." The crew saluted and Haratu's hologram dissipated, his mind now on more important things.
The City of God loomed up around the ship and Haratu increased the sensor range in order to try and detect any sancha pirates that might be hiding in the midst of the rubble. He saw them and quickly activated a link with the bridge in order to more activly encourage his men. "Release all the drones and let them orbit, i dont want any weapons activated." "But, Sir...." the first mate began, "Why not, we have the tachyons all online." "I want to see the drones in action first, there is no need to waste capacitor unless it is urgent." "What about the range? Once those pirates get close then the tachyons will not lock on efficiently enough." Haratu laughed and watched as the pirates closed in. Jon stood behind the hologram unemotional, trusting his master to do the right thing.

The pirate laughed to himself, this will be an easy kill, the battleship hardly knew they were closing in and to make matter better, they were already within the usual range for a tachyon. The drones may cause some problems, but they seemed to be ignoring the pirates and so it should be easy. The pirate shocked his distance, ten kilometres. Time to open fire.
"Ten kilometres, Sir!" the first mate said frantically, "Our tachyons are useless now." "Fire the tachyons, mate." Hartu said calmly. "But sir, they are useless." "I said, Fire them!" Haratu shouted. The first mate stood still, hardly believing his ears that a captain would waste his power on such a wasted effort. Haratu's hologram turned and he pointed at Jon, "Since he cant, you fire the tachyons." "Sir!" Jon said and rushed to the firing panel, opening the latches and switching the keys to 'on' mode. The Tachyons opened fire.
The sancha pirate watched as the tachyon turret aligned itself with his ship, the pirate laughed as he pulled into a dive to shake off the tracking. He was still laughing as his ship tore apart in a radiant explosion.
Haratu stared grimly out the bridge window, not saying a word, merely staring. His hologram's gaze slowly moved and rested upon the first mate. "Remember that tachyons can be equipped for any situation given the right equipment. You are dismissed." Haratu's hologram dissolved. Jon frowned at the ex-mate and pushed him aside as Jon took position at the control, already ging orders for the salvage effort of the downed pirate.
The first mate walked out of the room, his face already red in embarrisment of being overruled by a slave ______________________________________ I should indicate that shooting tachyons efficiently at 10km is possible with the right equipment and skills... i do it all the time. Ship: Dominix, "Jonah's Curse" Captain: Haratu Location: Devoid, Ussad system
The field looked nice in the glow of the sun and Haratu swivled teh camera drone around so he could see a better angle on a crystal he was observing on an asteroid. He made some notes in his log about zero gravity physics, an area he had been thinking about studying next time he was near a university. "Sir?" a voice interrupted him via his network relay, it was from engine deck 2. "Yes?" Haratu said irratibly, storing the log away to the ship's memory. "I suggest you turn your attention to the powergrid sir, we are getting unusual surges. My initial thoughts were that the sun was effecting it. I checked with Sensors department and they indicate unusual electromagnetic activity in the system." "Thank you crewman, I will try to locate the problem." "Thankyou Sir." Haratu was often suprised that pilots forot about the way that they were required to support their ship and their crew. A pilot was part of the ship and most of the crew realised this in a very unusual way, "It is almost as if I am a machine" haratu thought as he passed through the digital security for the engine decks and brought up the sensor readings. He quickly located the problem. The latest skirmishes had strained the powercore and now the capacitor was slowly draining, not being replenished fast enough to compensate for even menial tasks. This resulted in small power surges which corresponded to solar flares which forced the shield to drain the power. The system will survive a few days, but if not docked soon then the ship will come to a virtual standstill. Haratu diverted energy primarily to life support and shields before bringing up the bridge.
Jon was sitting down in the mates' chair when Haratu's hologram appeared next to him, Jon immediantly stood up and bowed his head, feet together and arms folded. A slave's stance that was common in this region. "The powercore is unstable and we have to prepare to journey home. I have disabled the ship's guns in order to keep the shields active and the life support fully operational" "Sir, how quickly do you want to leave?"" "Ten minutes should be long enough, pirate activity is low at this time of day so i don't expect danger." haratu paused for a moment, "But for safety's sake release the drones in case." Jon quickly gave orders that saw officers scramble to organise the rest of the 6200 crew members. Haratu meanwhile organised the drones and began moving the ship away from the asteroid field in preperation for a clean warp.
"Sensors indicate incoming warp objects, Sir," a voice from Sensor department said urgently, "looks like several cruiser type objects and few smaller objects." "Damn" Haratu's hologram said on the bridge, "The asteroid is no longer hiding our exhaust trace, they saw us when we started moving out." "Should we activate the tachyons, Sir?" Jon said calmly as always. "No! We need the energy to be able to make the warp. begin by sending the drones against the cruisers." "Sir!" A message from the sensor department, "They have locked us and are opening fire, lasers sir!" haratu listened to the simulated sounds before contacting drone control, "I will be taking over control of the drones." "Power core overloading, Sir!" the engine room called, "Shields are dragging too much power to replenish!" "Take back control of the drones!" Haratu ordered drone control, to engine, "I will stabilise it!"
Haratu began to bend his will yo contolling the now hazardous spasm's of the powercore, the energy seeming to rip apart the capacitor like a caged slave hound on a toy. On Bridge he commanded as he could, but his hologram shuddered as the powercore almost diminished to nothing. It took minutes for Haratu to find the pulse pattern and blend himself with it, a long time in a battle. haratu began generating a negative pulse to match the positive in an effort to dull the strength. "Sir!" a voice appeared at the back of his mind, almost causing him to loose the rythm, "The drones seem to have been effected by the solar flares they are only 50% operational." Haratu desperately wanted to turn his eyes to the sensors but knew he couldn't release the powercore's pulse, so he called, "Can we activate the armour repairer? How many enemies left?" Jon responded too quickly, "The power pulses are too strong for the repairer, most of the nanobots are fried. There are two cruisers left one at half shields." Haratu knew it was hopeless, his magnificent ship was lost, and only to a few reckless cruisers. "Prepare for evacuation." the hologram replied sullenly before winking out.

Edited by: Haratu on 17/07/2004 08:32:21 Haratu now let the powercore go slightly, the danger no longer of any importance. He instead turned to the drones and sensors. One cruiser quickly fell to his drones, and he turned their AIs to the next one. Haratu then began operating the armour repairer, boosting the bot's power capabilities to the extreme before releasing them on the ship's armour. Finally he put all the weapons online and turned off life support, most of the crew should be in their escape hatches by now and so they would not need it. The enemy cruiser came about to aim their killing blow, the spikes of the sancha vessel glistening in the dim sunlight. Haratu targetted and opened all the lasers on at full power.
The ship blew, which ship Haratu was unsure of because he was suddenly overwhelmed by the engine's alarms as the capacitor blew apart, static sparking along the surface of the ship towards the weapon decks. haratu's senses were overwhelmed as whole systems collapsed and alarms whistled to his mind. He could only just make the effort to activate the eject before he lost conciousness.
"Sir?" A voice called distantly, "This is First Leutenant Sam Duro attempting to open a communication with Captain Haratu Shinie, are you responsve?" "Yes, I am here." Haratu communicated as his camera drone winked on outside his capsule. "Thank God, Sir" Haratu could hear other cheering voices in the background, "We almost thought you were a gonner." "What happened Mr Duro? And why am I speaking to you?" "The ship seemed to blow apart from inside, Sir. The enemy cruiser seemed to be suprised and flew staightinto the ball of fire only to explode himself. It was spectacular." a pause before a calmer Sam responded, "In a terrible way of course, Sir." "And your authority?" "The slave, uhhh, Jon, was injured Sir when the blast threw our escape pod. He appears to be comatose and has a broken arm, nothing that can't be fixed. We lost five men in this shuttle during the explosion, twenty are injured. Other shuttles are standing by" "Good, that is better than a total loss." Haratu's senses settled, "I want all crew to report at the nearest station and prepare to fetch a salvage ship to clean up this mess." "Sir!" Haratu heard a dozen joyous voices call over the communication, at least their spirits were up... fireworks seemed to do that to a man. ________________________________________ This story actually took place, however the power stuff being a distraction can be replaced by some interesting discussions i was having. i was distracted and didn't think that a few npcs could take me down.
