Ok, I have a few questions, and I hope you can answer them. here they are.
1: Can a stealth bomber take on a BS and win? 2: Can two Stealth bombers act as jump gates using Cynos, so others can jump? 3: How much fuel does it take on both ends for a successful jump?
That is all, thanks for your time. |

1. Only if the BS pilot is AFK and/or completely unqualified to be in space. Bombers tend to rely more on stealth tactics to avoid getting hit. In a prolonged fight, the BS pilot only has to get lucky once. (and it'd be a LONG time before the BS tank broke if at all) 1a. Now if you had about a dozen bombers going after a single BS.... 2. Cyno fields are beacons for Jump-capable ships to lock onto for a jump. Only Capital ships, Jump Freighters and Black-Ops Battleships have Jump Drives. (and there's no module or rigging to get around this) 2a Titans and Black-Ops can use a 'Jump Portal' to jump other ships to the Cyno location. Fuel usage is based on the mass of ships being jumped. 3. Cyno fields require a minimum of 450 Ozone (Cyno Field Theory at L1) but can be done for as cheap as 250. Racial Isotope usage for the ships jumping depends on mass of the ship, modified by skills. 4. The cloak is a module one fits. No ship gets a 'free' cloak except for when jumping through a stargate. You'll be wanting the 'Improved Cloaking Device II'. The Covert-Ops cloak will NOT fit on a bomber. (This is by design. Deal with it.) |

They're not very good at anything solo.

They can insta-pop most frigates and two or three volley poorly fit cruisers. In packs they can be deadly with their high alphas.

Haven't really had a chance to try it in actual combat, but you could try cloaking/decloaking against a BS. Uncloak, get a lock, fire a volley while close, then cloak before he can lock you, rinse, repeat.
Just remember that if you cloak too soon while missiles are in flight, they have a good chance of disappearing before reaching the target. |

There's no "good chance". As far as I'm aware, cloaking will cause your missiles to do zero damage to your target |

There's a magic number as to how far out missiles will still do damage if you cloak while they're in flight; I've heard ~40km.
In before Merin and his "OMG, THE RAVEN IS SO MUCH BETTER, LOL," stealth bombers have a very specific role that they fill, and if you use them outside of that role, they're basically useless.

Have they changed this? I always understood it to be based off the cloaking animation time (approx 2 seconds after pressing the cloak button), so the effective range for this uncloak, lock and shoot, recloak tactic be about 11km (with Missile Projection 5).
Of course you can delay the recloak step, giving your missiles better range, but making it more likely that your target will spot you.

I suppose if you fitted it with a Domination/Fleet warp disruptor and came across a blaster fitted Megathron/Hyperion with no drones on board, you could lock it down and fire away. The blasters wouldn't be able to hit you; but it'd have to be off a gate or a station in a belt; and you better hope that the rats don't target you.

Ignore what you see on screen.
About 30km is what I've noticed; above that, it gets a bit funny and above 50... no way. --

I was testing this with a corp mate last night. At 35 kn cruise had time to hit and damage, at 40km no damage. This was just me being curious as my rather bad missile skills (mostly lvl 3, a couple at 4) mean that i won't be using the bomber yet. |

I can confirm that missiles DO still hit after hitting the cloak as long as you are close enough. I tested this out on a 0.0 Battlecruiser sized rat. I was between 25-35 km aligned in case things went bad, decloak, fired one volley of missiles and recloaked immediately. Took 4 volleys to kill it. Also tried this on the frigate sized rats and killed them in a single volley. Of course player ships have significately better tanks, so be carefull when soloing w/ a bomber, they are much more effective in groups, preferably with an inty or two to help tackle.

Edited by: Kenji Kimura on 03/11/2008 12:24:14 Anybody remember the Gulf War? The US used a couple of wings of F-117A Nighthawks (Stealth Bombers) to do a surgical strike into enemy territory. I assume that's what an EVE Stealth Bomber is for...
Note: Stealth Bomber's aren't called Stealth Bombers for nothing. They can do massive damage with bombs in a short period of time, then cloak and escape. Useful, ain't it?
Now to answer your questions.
1: Usually no. They're a specialist type of ship, unless you have a couple of buddies with you...
2: They can't fit Cynos modules, according to my memory. EDIT: Only ships with Jump Drives can lock onto a Cynos field, so, eh... Good luck trying. You could probably pull off "Warp to [Fleet] Member" easily though.
3: See above.
4: No. Go and buy an "Improved Cloaking Device II".

Yes, and then assuming you are actually doing enough damage to worry his tank, he'll just warp out as soon as you cloak.
That's the main problem with bombers flying solo - they are entirely unsuited to actually tackling anything since they're slow, very very easy to pop and generally have fitting issues with the midslots. Frigates are OK (usually!) since you can instapop them - or at the very least get the with the second volley, meaning you only have to survive for another 10-15 seconds (though this is not ideal). Anything else, and you will die within web range and not be able to hold them down for long enough outside of web range, generally speaking.
Bombers are good for surprise attacks on frigates, though, and in groups can use the same technique against larger targets. They can be good for empire wars too, cloaking in "enemy territory" outside a popular station and (alpha) striking targets of opportunity. Not tremendously powerful as a fighting force, but good for reducing enemy morale (so more like a sniper than an F-117). If the enemy starts trying to lock you down, there are some nice counter-counter bomber tactics that can net you interceptor kills as well.
However, you cannot really go out and hunt in one, for the reasons noted above.
