Eve runs much better using CrossOver games than it does using the native client. CodeWeavers are giving away a full free version of CrossOver Professional which includes CrossOver Games for TODAY only.
Go here to get a registration code and download link.
I bought and have been using CrossOver Games for months, it's far better than the native OS X client for Eve. |

I just installed the 7 day demo, the crossover site itself is down so you cannot enter your serialnumber, but besides that.... It must be really bad, the native client, on your Mac because running EVE through CO, makes things worse on my Mac(Pro).
I went only into the station due to DT, but I got very stuttery performance, while spinning around, and just moving my mouse around made the FPS drop from high twenties into low tens.....
So /me sticks to the official supported client (for now) both lack premium anyway.
Edit: ps: thank you for the heads up.

There's a simple tweak to enable premium through CrossOver, I can't remember the details as I'm at work but it's a single file edit to allow it to be used.
I get around 50-60fps docked and about 30-35fps when I'm in space. I get no discoboxes, I get no problems of the client just crashing, it's far more reliable on my system (early 2008 model, 8 cores, 10Gb RAM, 8800 graphics). I actually bought CrossOver Games when I was using a hackintosh and had a similarly better Eve experience than using the supported (and rubbish) OS X client. --

Are you certain Premium works under crossover? I know it doesn't using Fusion (presumably because the version of dx9 doesn't support SM3).

Crossover isn't a VM like Fusion or Parallels, Its a commercial fork of the Wine project (www.winehq.org) They are basically re-writing the Win32 & DirectX APIs for other platforms. Its the same as Cider, just (slightly) less crappy...

Hi could one of you help me with setting up eve on crossover.
I downloaded crossover and the eve client for windows and installed both and the windows client opens and everything but at the log in screen a text box pops up with not text in it and bellow the box it says (scroll down to continue) and I can't scroll down. Am I just being impatient or did I do something wrong when installing the windows client? the crossover I have is from the link posted at the top of this page crossover seems to have installed with out a serial number.
thanks for the help |

at first start it autodownloaded the the patch but after the patch it said s.th. about some directx problem. but crossover said everything went fine o.O
client runs in classic mode just fine. well about 50% less fps than the official mac client. and no premium "your computer does not support..." :P
that's on a MBP with an nvidia 8600M 256MB.
anyone else any luck with premium? |

Well the latest version sort of works. But one thing to note is that you should avoid having to switch crossover out to some other app. I can't seem to recover from that and the whole window locks up after that and won't accept inputs until I quit EVE and crossover.
The other problem I encountered is that I can type into chat windows, but nothing gets transmitted across and I can't see anything that others have typed.
Its a pity because it does seem to perform better on my Mac Pro than with the official client and I've had problems with the official client from day 1.
In contrast, I started out playing EVE using Crossover early 2007 and that worked fine until Trinity broke Crossover Mac.

Ain't that right. Had it running... at -2 FPS with premium, station background is completely black and stuff like ship graphics in my ships window, are non existent or severely broken.
It may work for some but not for this lady.

whowa guys, wait a minute. Crossfire is not the solution to our problems and it makes CCPs job easyer because they don't have to worry about the mac client that way! It might be the best idea now but in the longrun it won't help us as a gamining community.

CCP broke this in a patch, and have said they don't care about people using linux/wine. Since Crossover uses wine 1.0, it is also affected. The work around is to put eve in a virtual desktop.
You guys also need to to press esc once you're ingame, graphics submenu. Turn HDR on, then turn it back off, and make sure shadows are off. That should fix most of the rendering errors.

Making the suggested chages to the registry and HDR settings, I can indeed get the premium graphics to work and they are beautiful. HOWEVER... Out in space, some stations and jumpgates and other structures just plain old dont render at all. You can hear the noises the jumpgates make and can even still right click on the area it SHOULD be and can jump, its just not rendering the jumpgate. Same thing for some stations, you can see the outside lights and such, but no station, right click though and you can dock still just like normal. Sort of bizarre.
Unfortunately since I cannot be sure what else I cannot see due to rendering issues though, its a tad too dangerous for me to run around with things in that state just so its prettier.
Good news is though the Crossover client running standard graphics seems to be smooth and stable (so far) I havent found any big gotcha's like structures not showing up yet. Havent checked the mini maps yet though.

Hi Aurix Lexico.
I would like to point out that we do care about everyone playing our game, however there is little we can do about issues that arise on platforms that we do not officially support.

On the other hand, since your officially supported client is about 12 months behind the windows client by now, people DO try and find playable alternatives as asked somewhere else: what gives CCP? what has happened over the past 12 months that we went from "yeah, something is being done about linux/mac" to "who cares about linux/mac, let's stop supporting them"?

For those just dropping in and reading the above comment, please note that it was clearly in reference to *linux+wine* not being officially supported. Not that linux or osx aren't. :)

I did get my free Crossover Games (Mac version) during the free giveaway.
Damn, this ought to be the officially supported Mac client version. Eve now runs almost as fast as when booted into Windows, with the added benefit that all of my other open applications don't slow to a halt.
Additionally, it's much more flexible than the native client.
- I've got mine set up in its own virtual desktop, running full screen inside the virtual desktop. So, I have to set the Dock to Hiding, and I see the Mac menu bar. But this is a good thing. (Essentially, it kind of "becomes" your desktop.)
- Now that I have the title bar, I can monitor the graphics chip temp and turn up the fan speed without tabbing out.
- No need to go to ugly window mode and displace the screen to tab out. The virtual desktop stays in place, and you can do everything else on top of it.
- Did I mention SPEED?
Unlike others, though, I haven't gotten premium to work.
I'm really afraid that November 11th will break my Crossover installation!

Oops... also meant to point out that the officially support, CCP, Mac and Linux versions aren't even really native. They're Cider from Cedega, which uses an older version of the WINE libraries.
Crossover Games is another solution that uses newer versions of the WINE libraries. Supposedly Cider is free to end users, and companies that use it pay a license for every version (not sure what CCP's arrangement is, though).
Barring exclusive contracts with Cedega, it might actually be more profitable to support Crossover and stop paying the license to Cedega, with the downside being that potential players would have to cough up for their own Crossover licenses.
I'm not sure how well plain-vanilla WINE works.

Edited by: Apple Boy on 05/11/2008 06:45:51 with crossover games I was able to get classic working and it worked ok, but not premium. with crossover pro I couldn't get it working at all. Granted, this was with just hitting install and calling it a day, I haven't spent any time messing around with it to see what the problem is with directx that keeps throwing errors and I probably won't since the deal only included crossover pro with games being a trial version that I don't feel like paying for.

because I can boot into linux, OS X, or windows on the same machine which is really helpful when writing a multi-platform program.
