I know the highway changes caused it but I'm wondering what factors go into deciding why a particular system becomes a economic capital. How did Jita take the title after the highway changes. Why not a system next to Jita? Perhaps that was a possibility but once the selling tipped toward Jita, sellers just kept re-enforcing it. Perhaps it could of been a neighboring system but just luck decided on Jita.
Anyone have an insight?

I dunno why they stayed, but it's a nice short name to type. Same goes for websites with short names, they get more visitors.
Also people don't like to move all the time. Their businesses run okay and change is bad hhmmmkay ;) ----------------- Destiny is not a matter of chance. It is a matter of choice. It's not a thing to be waited for - it is a thing to be achieved. |

Lots of Caldari players, Jita's in Caldari space. Close to home, I guess.
There's still regional markets of a sort, Oursulaert (wonder if I spelled that right the first time..) is pretty damn active for we Gallente.

Each race has at least 1 trade hub if you look at their space. Amarr have Amarr. Minimtar have Rens, and Gallente have Oursulaert. Caldari have Jita and Motsu. Jita just happens to be the Capital of the trade hubs. _______________

there's lots of other little hubs about too, although the forge ONLY has jita.
I remember back when i only had 2 or 3mill sp sobaseki was a nice hub, i think alot of people traded between jita and there so it was a nice place to go to, especially when you didn't understand the map and were quite new, could have just hopped 1 jump to jita but was abit stupid and just looked at the market for a good buyer. ---------

EDIT: spelling
There are lots of factors, Yulai became a bad choice after the highway changes and that's why it was abandoned.
I remember Jita was announced to be the new Yulai by a group of players that dominated the Yulai market, even before the highway changes were in effect. So the short answer is the players chose it, but I suspect you're asking why they chose it.
Back in the day manufacturing slots had a different mechanic. Instead of renting the slot for xx hours or days to complete a project, you actually rented the slot, and as long as you kept it in use, noone else could take it from you. I am not sure if this was still in effect when Yulai moved to Jita, though. Also there were fewer slots per station. If this was still in effect it would have meant a system with many factory slots would have been preferable.
Enough of memory lane... when you choose a hub you want high traffic, (the map shows you traffic, albeit not perfectly), lots of manufacturing slots, and local research slots make things easier as well. Agents in the area are nice because they draw traffic. Being on the way from one region to another is good as well. Aside from that having a fully stocked market ... a "one-stop-shop" is vital, as many people have limited game time and the time they take flying 15 jumps round-trip to a one stop shop is often much faster than flying to 12 different stations to get the stuff they need. and far less annoying.

Edited by: Nexus Kinnon on 30/10/2008 15:30:05 afaik Yulai used to be connected to all the regional hubs through highway gates, which meant that it just made sense for all trade to happen there. When CCP removed the highways (with warp to zero?) then Yulai became less of a major hub. I have no idea why Jita became the main hub after that though.

yeah, oursulaert isnt a MAJOR trade hub, Dodixie, Auvergne and Aunia are the major Gallente trade hubs
i consider oursulaert kind of a junior trade hub, not the best prices, but you can pretty much find everything you need

We in minmatar space have several, Rens, Lustrevik, Hek... Just to name a few.
It's much nicer to space things out rather than cluster them.

People complained about Yulai being too laggy so CCP changed the jump routes and it died as a hub. That was over three years ago, and before the warp to zero change.
A little more than two years ago, Ours was the second major hub under Jita. Sinq-Laison had zero market. As the population has increased more and more mini-hubs have grown. Everyone in Sinq used to go to Ours to buy their stuff, so Ours was the big hub. But now they have their own hubs so Ours is less important as it was. ----------------------------------------------------

Not if you're shopping. Walk down the right back alley in Jita and you can find anything.

He means the different hubs. Would it better to have 5 redundant markets where you can find anything in without having to go to the other markets right next to each other, or spread throughout the region 5 or 10 jumps apart from each other?

These days, it's fairly self-perpetuating. It's the centre of the moon materials market, so everyone in the T2 supply chain is forced to trade there. There are only 6 systems in the game with more stations, but it's the large number of production slots that makes the difference. --- DIY copying in Liekuri 20:1 mineral compression Eve Online folding@home team |

Jita used to have agents, ice fields, and school stations. When I started playing, it was already a more well-known hub than Yulai.
And BTW, bring back the Oursulaert-Alentene gate. :( |

This is why Jita is Walmart.
Until the regional markets have the sheer number of sellers fighting over the last isk to make a sale then Jita will win. Jita *is* the market. Everyone bases prices around the Jita price. If a system could support a commodities market, Jita would be it.

easy fix just apply a congestion tax
the system can compute daily turn over have it apply a penalty tax for the top 10 systems starting at say 10% working down to 5%

I don't go to jita cause it is cheap. I go to jita because I can get everything in the same station. No need to jump around to a dozen different systems and 2 dozen stations in a half fitted ship. __________________________________________________________
