I do not think it is a very useful idea to post in Assembly hall as proposal, but I was itching to share it anyhow.
Turn Jump from instant gating into very fast warping - As in you actually see your ship move across vast space of the galaxy.
In fact this would look really awesome with new backgrounds. Especially since they aren't random anymore. While it would require to make pretty much a transitional background from 1 area to another and amount of such would be tremendous - Fortunately the background in this case does not need to be generated at high resolutions, especially if the jump will have its own blur effect.
Perhaps even mix Warp and Jump together: Ship initially enters warp into its Jump coordinates and then during Warp it accelerates further and enters Jump Tunnel and perform similar actions in reverse at the destinations. Then the Warp-Jump phase would be ideal to introduce system loading at. Imagine it in a way of "Electronics recalibrations" =). Perhaps Warp to the edge of the solar system and then (when you are sufficiently away from solar gravity well) initiate Jump as 1 continuous motion.
Pro's:
- Eye candy galore - Potential new player magnet - See the vastness of Eve Universe - New hot-dropping mechanic - since Jump isn't instant FC would need to plan Jumps ahead of time for them to arrive when needed. - Less load lag for jumping pilots (Especially with warp\jump combination, since the initial system data loads during the transition between jump to warp, and few seconds later when ship arrives at its destination the surrounding load) - Jumps are more predictable (having a spy in the jumping fleet pays even more now) - Slower power projection
Cons:
- Precious CCP man-hours - Logistics would be slower as well - Ships need to be tackled for longer time until help arrives (actually has both positive and negative effects) - Ships might need correct alignment to initiate Jump |

Guess you never had to do this before.
Couldn't find the actual video ride, just an image and some music I vaguely remember. What I do remember, is 45 minute wait for a boat to arrive. It only waited 3 minutes or something....another 45 minute ride across 1 zone....then you got there. It might of been shorter, but it was an hour or more out of your time where you did nothing....lets not mention how often you could miss the thing just as you got to the dock.
Now, do you actually want to wait for long distance travel between systems? Every system....like 5 plus minutes....for 30+ jumps....and Bob is your uncle how terrible that idea is. Freighters are bad enough, because you can't do anything but chat (freighter pilots are freaking insane to manual pilot those things more then 5 jumps). The boat was cool and all, but over time you had to be somewhere to meet friends and might have had zero notice to do so...incoming instant teleporation now inherent in every other MMO out there. The travel time to and from gates, is your suggestion from jumping to system to system. |

If i read your post correctly you are talking about stargate transition. I was referring only to Jumpdrive.
Stargates should remain instant. Besides during stargate transmission you are nothing but a beam of energy - you wont actually see anything.
I've edited the topic title to avoid confusion. |
