Edited by: Ravow on 05/11/2008 19:51:01 I will detail my experiences with EVE On Linux with these 2 Video cards
Nvidia 8600GTS 512M (G84): DRIVERS = 177.80 CRASH1 : GUI HANG on heavy loaded multicore system. X start to take 100% of one core. Rapid fix : login via SSH from another computer, Kill X (CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE don't work) Nvidia fix : disable SMP in kernel or boot with maxcpu=1... They call that a FIX since like 4 drivers release...
CRASH2 : EVE lockup, mouse can't go out of the EVE window, sometime EVE unlock... weird bug
CRASH3 : CTD :P
========================== AMD HD4670 512MO : DRIVERS = fglrx 8.543
Never crashed since sunday AM!!! don't know why but these drivers seam to be better and better at each release.
Premium don't work (no ship :p) but it don't crash anymore.
I buy this Radeon after the crash that make me lost my Vargur. And I think this is a good choice even if this card is not supported by CCP.
Compared to NVIDIA: +NO CRASH ON EVE! (compared to a couple of crashs each day with Nvidia) +Use less power +Other application during eve playing like web browsing, using terminal.. seam more fluid (multi-screen)
-No premium -Fglrx not compatible to XEN -Harder to setup compared with Nvidia
* All test by wine. Don't install anything not in portage on my system.

Edited by: Kadesh Priestess on 06/11/2008 10:21:24 Did you try open-source drivers for HD?
For me it's pretty interesting matter. I still didn't decide which videocard to choose.

Nah!
Opensource drivers support the 3D up to chip R500/RS600. But mine is a R670 so not supported yet.
Will be probably supported in a couple (2-3) of month!

How's your performance with ATI?
My Nvidia 6600gt ran the classic graphics above 60fps most of the time, but my ATI HD4850 tops out at 40fps in space, seems to perform fine in the station though.
Also minimaps and F11 doesn't have corruption with ATI :)

You say it took longer to set up the ati card, but what did you have to do? I'm trying to run an ati card and I keep getting a crash during the character select screen. Did you have this problem, and how did you fix it?

install the drivers off the ATI site. It's what fixed it for me. Stuck at the no-ship part now tho :/

Please keep posting updates on how ATI cards work with EVE Premium on Linux.
My 8600GT just died on me so I need a replacement. All reviews so far say ATI cards are beating the hell out of nvidia on performance.
Now off to buy a stop-gap 9600GT

I'm trying to get an ATI + linux fan buddy to sign up. So, I hope CCP knows about this...
