It's pretty good for hauling, mini-freighter ftw!
But... thats about it.
If they gave it the ability to fit strip miners though, that would be a nice ship for all us solo miners out there.... not that I am a solo miner, though I have done it before (and boy is it painful....)

Is this a joke thread?
It's a mining support ship (which also doubles as a mini-freighter). Mostly for highsec, I'd guess, unless you have a bunch of pvp-capable ships standing by.
Place someone with a mining support mindlink in one, plop in some mining gang modules, and watch you mining op efficiency go up. Plus the fact that you no longer need a hauler to ferry minerals from jetcans to station, you can now just fill up the Orca cargo hold. It's a great ship. We'll be using them quite a bit.
It's great to see industrial ops get some support, too, from time to time.

I could almost see that... You could have a couple guys in salvage-destroyers, dumping into it as they get full (instead of the warps back and forth to station, across all manner of gates, etc)
Cheaper to use a badger for that, tho. Depends on how valuable you see the 'neat' factor of dumping into a hanger on the ship I suppose?
No, it has 70km range for tractors, I think it is, and increased speed of the tractors. I am semi-serious when I am suggesting using it as the next step up from a salvage dessie. Just a bit hard on the skills for that small advantage.

Yeah, it's got potential... but that's about it.
Actually it can run all 3 links @ the same time. But I will say that only 2 of them are worth running. Other slot is for the tractor Beam.

Place someone with a mining support mindlink in one, plug in some mining gang modules, and watch you mining op efficiency go up. Plus the fact that you no longer need a hauler to ferry minerals from jetcans to station, the Orca can now just tractor in the jetcans and fill its own cargo hold. Handy. It's a great ship. We'll be using them quite a bit.
Needs a pilot with high Leadership skills, of course, to get full effect.

QFT. Spot on Alex Harumichi.
I think most people were expecting a uber mining ship ... not a mining command ship.

Well, that's a valid point. Otoh, the specs for the Orca have been available for quite a while now. I know that some of our pilots started skilling up to fly them the moment the specs and reqs were released.
...but true, it's a mining command ship. Fantastic for larger, organized mining ops with high(ish) skills in play. Not that useful for solo miners, unless they want to afk-mine with mining drones or something boring like that.
The fact that it's a mini-freighter is a nice extra bonus, and I guess some people may use it just for that.

Yeah I was one of those pilots who spec'd up to get one even before release. I was planing to use it mostly for high sec hauling, and Corp Mining Ops now and then.
I still am excited about owning one ... but I will wait a few weeks for the price to retreat from demand induced highway robbery land.

Tractoring cans into its own hold is useless.
You know how fast 2 hulks can fill that cargo bay? Or 4?
Seriously it's just going to be used as a large hauler for me (my impel only goes to 36k)

Just find the part of the Swiss army knife you need, then use that.
Me? I'm gonna use it as a better tanked hauler.

I was just wondering how long it will be until we see farmers in them. Maybe they should have named it something more agri-centric.
Big damn cargo hold, mini-freighter, as a lot of people are saying. If it aligns faster than your standard freighter, it won't be as much of a chore to fly. I guess for belt-killers this thing has some valid use, but I didn't know anyone not script-controlled was still mining anything but plag in high-sec.
Wonder what the throughput would be with five harvester drones ... maybe if I'm out of capital skills to train ... --

That's why the Orca is used in bigger gangs. Have the Orca like the spider in the net, sitting centered and tractor/give bonuses. Cuts some time for the designated hauler.
For smaller gangs and/or 0.0 it isn't very useful tho.
I'm probably having my freighter alt train up for it to supply some support for corpmates that mine, but that's since she got the prereqs already done and I rather fly the Orca with her than an Iteron MkV.
Very limited use, but not that bad in that role. Very sexy look. Not that expensive. I think I'll buy one.

Yeah I think the Orca will really shine when its part of medium to large mining operations.

One point if its for hauling and bonuses, how is that working when you lose the bonuses when you dock to unload.

Also actually carrying the damned hulks there.
I'm pretty sure the hulks would get there a lot faster without it.
Apart from being a decidedly dubious high sec mining command ship, the only use i can see for it is to rig it up with expanders and use it as mini-freighter.

You just need to time the docking just right. If you wait till the end of miner's cycle and go to station and unload then, by the time you're back out and running links again, they're cycle is still going and you can crac on, almost seamless. Seems to work that way with me and my mining director anway, been using him to haul for me since 'ever'.
This ship is great for me. I know it's not the be all and end all, but its better than what I have at the moment by a long chalk and but for a larger cargo bay, I can't really ask for a great deal more.

It's pretty much perfect for high-sec exploration. It carries all the fitted ships you need, great for exploration mining if that's your game, can sustain operations for a long time with its big cargohold.
You'll still need two characters, one to fly the Orca, and one to fly everything else, but you no longer have to fly back and forth with specialised ships, or carry them in a hauler and refit them time and time again.

Even in low sec or 0.0,it has it's uses as well:
Fit a cloak and use it's ship maintenance bay for frigates or interceptors(it can fit a decent amount of them),and the corp cargo bay carries everything you could need in terms of ammo.
Use it with a roving fleet for ammo ressuply, wich includes strontium and fuel for the jump drives on capital ships. |

It's for moving my rigged ship collection around highsec. I can copy with flying the two or so BS I use regularly myself, but I have a lot of frigate/cruiser/BC sized hulls, and a useful proportion of them are rigged.
The Orca therefore turns about 20 round trips into 4, which I'm satisfied with.
Oh, and I hear you can use it to support a mining op, too - links + tractor beams + large hold + corp hangar array. Carry along a few ships, some spare mining drones/crystals. |

It doesn't solve any hauling problems caus its going to be easier to haul from the orca to a station than move the damn thing but it can hold 2 hulks + over 100k total space with t2 cargo expanders and the 70k tractor beam will speed things up.
