Hi, this thread is an extension of my other thread asking some general pirate questions, and I thought it'd warrent its own discussion. So here it is.
I'd like to know what people think of the sudo-career of corporate espionage. That is, infiltrating a corp and stealing their valuable items/information. This is of course absolutely frowned upon in other MMOs (I know i would frown upon it), and even illegal in some. But in EVE? Would most of you consider it part of living in EVE? Just one of the dangers? Would you consider it a scam? That is to say, an out-of-game scam. One that the game isn't designed for, and one that devs should ban. Or do you feel its more a part of corperate life in EVE?
For me, i feel its part of the EVE universe. Yes its harsh. But before i ever played EVE i had read epic tales of corperate espionage that were months/years in the making and tore down truely titan corperations. Its those stories, among others, that first drew me to this game.
How about you?

Quote: Corperate Thievery a career or scam?
Why can't it be both?
If you give someone access to your corp assets, and they run off with 'em, that's your own damn fault for trusting the wrong people.
And yes, it happens rather frequently...

Since everyone knows the story you're talking about, i.e., the biggest heist in mmo history happening right here, and that CCP said it was game mechanics.... and we're all still here playing.... what is the point of your question again?

If you actually read my post properly you would have realized that i was looking for the opinion of players on this forum.

Valid career path.
Really difficult to do but has high rewards. /start sig I love old characters that post 'I've beeen playing the game four years' when I know their account has been sold on. /end sig |

well its a double edged sword , eve discourage solo play and encourge team work , but there are no guarantees that your old gaming "pals" wont rip you off .
Originally by: Cyron Tout before i ever played EVE i had read epic tales of corperate espionage that were months/years in the making and tore down truely titan corperations. Its those stories, among others, that first drew me to this game.
i have to agree , i think those incidents made CCP great PR , i know many people that joined the game because of those incidents .
so on one hand you have to be in guard and paranoid all the time ,but on the other hand if you want to experience the more advanced game content ,you got to let go and trust other people (although if you completely trust anyone you are a fool) .
but i think its allready integral part of eve ,if CCP will decide to ban it now all hell will break loose ,but it does discourage new players imo cause every one and there sister&grandpa want to be a corp/alliance thief .
so my conclusion , too late to do anything about it ,but it does screw CCP in a way and yet draws the less main stream minded players in . so yeah you can definitely say its a valid carrier .

I'm going to steal a Titan. That is one of my goals for this game and I am doing it with an account that is almost trained, almost accepted and has absolutely no ties with myself or anyone that plays this game that I know in real life or game life. And when I do steal it I am going to DDD everyone I see with it on a constant basis. Who knows I could be in your alliance right now just waiting for you to hand me the pilots license. There is a reason Schalac is broke, espionage is not cheap work.

...and drove others out!
The way it is implemented now (alts, multiple accounts), it is 100% pure metagaming. (See previous post, stealing a titan?). I don't understand why CCP let those things happen, it has nothing to do with the game itself, nothing to do with roleplay either.
It's like some people, member two alliances at war/skirmish using two accounts. Total nonsense but it's allowed. Then you wonder why there is so many carebears in empire Some just want to stay away of that sh*t.
Frankly, I'm against.

Perhaps the term for this could be "career criminal"

Is "metagaming" like the new way of saying metrosexual, but in a gaming kind of way?

Whatever you like, but I will never have the ability to lead a titan owning alliance due to my inherent apathy towards others. I'll steal the **** out of anything not locked up though, due to my understanding of the lack of leadership skills I possess.

It's definitely a career. Is it a nice, honest, career? No, but it's still a career.

It's lucrative, but not for the faint of heart. In fact, having a heart is a disadvantage.

Edited by: Cyron Tout on 14/11/2008 01:38:35 Hrm, so its a pretty overwhelming 'yes its legit, but...' opinion most EVE players have. Interesting. Of course, I'm sure most of you would change your opinion if you were on the receiving end of a heist. Also, yeah doing this and causing the downfall of a corp would undoubtedly ruin the in-game lives of those who put 100s or 1000s of hours into the corp, and probably make them rage-quit EVE.
Heartless career path for a heartless player eh. On the positive side, you don't need to train any skills to do it. ;)
