Currently the state of EVE PVE is a total joke. I've fought more challenging NPCs in Freelancer (I am excluding Sleepers and Incursions from this because those seem ok).
The problem as I see it is that missions have tons and tons of NPCs that can't really kill you. These NPCs blindly shoot the first thing to pull agro and do crap dps with crap ewar and crap support.
Here's how we solve this problem.
- Reduce the number of rats in belts and missions vastly but give them massive bounties.
- Give all mission and belt rats the cookie cutter PVP fit for that ship. Also give them the same kinds of buffs a player would get so that they can do some serious damage. I want that Vindicator in the mission to be as deadly as a real vindicator.
- Give rats in Level 4 and 5 missions rep support with realistically strong logi ships on their side.
- Give all rats in belts and missions a sleeper AI.
In general, far fewer rats to kill that are as dangerous as a player flying that ship and a massive increase in the value of the rat's bounties to make it worthwhile to kill these new uber rats. Things are only impossible until they are not. |

I could get behind this.
However, while this would cause some super awesome excitement at first, it is still shooting NPCs with limited AI, and people will gravitate toward the easiest way to do that -- most likely weird kiting fits on Tengus or something.
I agree that PvE needs to be fixed, but I'm not sure I've seen a way to do it that I agree with 100% yet. I don't remember where (maybe in one of the latest fanfest videos) but I recall the devs have acknowledged this issue and came to the same basic conclusion that missions need to be revamped with fewer, more intelligent NPCs that more closely simulate PVP. IIRC, they said that you should not have to fit your ship differently for PVE and PVP.
However, I don't agree with you that they should be as smart as Sleepers or even Incursion rats but there is definitely a lot of room for improvement without reaching those levels of difficulty. |

A decently reasonable suggestion(surprised it came from you tbh) but it has been brought up many times before and hasn't happened yet so meh. It's prolly pretty far down the list of priorities atm. Assuming they have a list and assuming it would even be on it. I plan on living forever.......so far, so good. |

Idea is interesting, but the obsessive salvager in me dislikes the idea of fewer ships to kill (although I know this would prolly be necessary if the challenge was upped that much)
Also true that if I want missions more challenging, I can do them in low sec, as said above. |

First off, devs need to be taught PVP. If they want to make it a "fair PVP-like experience", the rats will have to come at the player 1 at a time. To make it a REALISTIC PVP experience, then the rats will have to outnumber the player ten to one. They must also all be in either kiting hurricanes or nano drakes.

Oh, wow. I like.
Except I am wary of NPCs becoming too competent, as it reduces the mystique of being a capsuleer - after all, part of the whole point of being a capsuleer is having far more power than traditionally-helmed ships. If NPCs get competent enough, it becomes an immersion-breaking case of "well, gee, this isn't so great after all, now is it?"... unless said NPCs just become capsuleer-piloted ships, which again is annoying as it means capsuleers become far more common than they are today.
So I support this (and especially the one linked to three posts up), but with the caveat that the NPCs display some of the inherent downsides of being piloted and manned by ordinary (trained) people. |
