Quantum rise is, Unless I am mistaken, the 9th free expansion of EVE Online. With it comes several changes to weapon dynamics, speed dynamics, and fleet dynamics. It is generaly considered to be a rather large change to the game (for the caldari at least).
Which makes me wonder... Why the frell did CCP call it quantum rise?
A quantum is, by definition, an extreemly tiny, almost insignificant, amount of energy (See quantum physics, the study of the extreemly small) normally used in relation to electrons. More specificaly, a quantum (unless I am very much mistaken, which I doubt) is the amount of energy needed to raise an electron from one energy level to the next energy level, without putting another electron in it's place, which slightly excites the atom. Again, this is a very, very, very (like, almost nothing) small amount of energy.
So either CCP is saying that this expansion is insignificant and can be writen off, or that word doesn't mean what they think it meens.

Don't forget, this is from the same bunch of people that named a frozen rock in the North Atlantic "Greenland" to encourage people to go there.
Quantum of Solace is a pretty odd name as well. ________________________________________________

Probably because it's not an expansion, it was a patch.

Well, you already said it yourself, partially, but I think it is a very fitting name... Quantum, derived from the latin quantus literally means "how much"... You could say this refers to the massive testing and balancing that has been done in this patch.
However I do not think this is the motivation CCP used for coming up with a name... Marketing probably just put something fancy together without really knowing what it means. |

What i'm trying to comunicate is that the modern usage of the word quantum means very small. so calling anything that is supposed to have a responce of "OMG THAT'S COOL." Quantum Rise is, in hindsight, a very silly idea.
And quantum of solace makes sence, since it's supposed to convey a lack of peace, which quantum of solace translates to...
And curse you karille for outdoing my vocabulary. :P |

Quantum dosen't mean small, it means something which is one indivisable packet. So Quantum rise is essentually a specific amount of change.

Latin is just as valid as any other interpretation of a word... CCP are also known for using names that refer to the past, using names of mythological creatures etc. Quantum is just the modern way of writing quantus.
And the image that quantum must be something very small is just in your head, as theoretically quantum forces are everywhere, and thus very big and powerfull in a way. It's about time I put something sensible in here, but I couldn't really come up with something so you'l have to do with this. Are you like really bored, or did you not notice this is my sig? |

when they named it greenland you could grow oats there and graze cattle along the southern coast. things have changed since then though it seems to be heading back toward grazing cattle there again.

I wouldn't consider anything that adds a new ship a patch. It was an expansion, just a small one.

A quantum is not a measure of energy (i.e. it doesn't have units of energy). As someone said before, it is a sort of packet (a photon is an example of a quantum). The amount of energy used to move an electron up a level is variable, depending on which level you are starting and ending in, so to say that a quantum is this amount is incorrect in more than one way.
However, you are correct in the statement that it is small, so I believe that your primary point still stands. ------------- Stop whining.

Not necessarily. It's by definition SOME specific amount, no particular regards given to size. Only in the particular setting of physics, it means the smallest possible amount that can exist. There's plenty of other uses for the word "quantum" that don't imply a small scale at all.
Quote: So either CCP is saying that this expansion is insignificant and can be writen off, or that word doesn't mean what they think it meens.
It could mean anything from "An tiny increase" to "A measurable increase" which includes "An increase so big that's still measurable".
Basically, it can mean whatever the hell you want it to mean, and it just sounds cool, so why not use it ?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_leap In the vernacular, the term quantum leap has come to mean an abrupt change or "step change", especially an advance or augmentation. The term dates back to early-to-mid-20th century, coinciding with the discoveries of quantum mechanics. The popular and scientific terms are similar in that both describe a change that happens all at once (revolutionary), rather than gradually over time (evolutionary), but the two uses are different when it comes to the magnitude of the change or advance in question. |
