I've been playing around with the character creator and I wanted to change the height of a character.
I want her to be short.
Maybe not world record short, but definitely in the running for a casting call as an Ewok.
And I don't think I can.
Made me think. Isn't that a bit wrong? Shouldn't there be some kind of option for people wanting to recreate their real life physical appearance in game?
I've been trying to get my mother into EVE as she is a bit of a game nut and I think the slow drone of mining lasers would be just the thing for her.
As a surprise I was going to create a character that looked like her. Now that's OK, but she's very short. Just around four feet. I think it would bean insult to make a tall character give the pride she has in getting by in a tall world as a little person.
So why are CCP discriminating against little people like this?

No discrimination. Its unfinished.
What we see is a testbed. CCP was testing the engine for the characters. That's been put on ice, so any possibilities of changing heights at all are frozen as well.
I would love to be able to shrink my character by 4 inches. Then she would be the same as me. |

Go and try Skyrim's character creator, you can't even alter anything on the body just the head. Eve's character creator is probably one of the best in the gaming world, certainly the best I've seen. So by your reckoning Bethesda (Skyrim) are discriminating against short, tall and overweight people. |

Not used the console command, even so compared to EVE's it's still pretty basic.
Without using the console command there are two adjustable features skin tone and weight, but the weight is just basic direct scaling to simulate more or less muscle. Real basic stuff. |

I feel your pain. I would like to make my characters fatter. I'm not interested in just making a stupid weird looking avatar, like some people. I want fat and height to actually be options. I want to make a more realistic character that's all.
Just as an example, my avatar here is as fat as it gets.

You know, "short" and "tall" are pretty relative when dealing with people living twenty thousand years in the future. Humanity almost doubled its average height since the days of ancient Rome; short people in the age of EVE would probably be something like fifteen meters. It would certainly explain Einherji fighters.
EVE's character creator is great, but indeed does not allow for "less than optimal" body-type builds. However, there are some games coming out soon, such as Phantasy Star Online 2, which make this possible. I can only imagine what CCP will do to remain competitive. |

EVE takes place 40,000 years or so in the future. Considering we went through an extremely long dark age or technology reset when the EVE gate collapsed there would be much malnutrition and shorter average heights. When these are remedied I'd assume each generation would continue to grow taller than the previous much like today.
I'd assume that the average height of someone in New Eden would be anywhere from 6 to 6.5 feet.
Of course there are many factors. People who grew up on planets with less gravity would be taller than those that grew up on planets with more gravity even if there is a slight difference. So I really don't know however I can safely assume that the average height would be what we consider tall. |

Graic Gabtar wrote:So why are CCP discriminating against little people like this?
Mostly because it complicates animation, especially for interactions with the environment or other players. Also displacements for muscularity, weight, etc generally don't look very good when you just squash them a bit and call it a day. In short, more authoring work.
This was a great question at Fanfest last year during the Avatar technology session, so if you dig that video up on YouTube, be sure to check out the closing QA session. |

You remind me of a woman I once knew. Not YOU being like her, but she was very short - and for an adult around 30, I'd say way short . She was skinny too, and being so small, had a childish voice. So at age 30 she looked like she was 12.
Needless to say, she was a creep magnet.
I think the character creator should be conservative about extremes on the one hand, but then on the other, perhaps it should go "all out" into the freak zone? Dwarf short or elf tall, he-shes, super fat, rail thin, or just plain Andre The Giant huge.
It would make WiS interesting, but then we will have to deal with the hordes of 12 year olds rolling super freaks and running around the stations in underwear, and that's what Ironforge and Stormwind are for.

You'd be surprised how critical that is to get a person's animation right for that sort of thing. Where it may work for a shorter person a tall person would start clipping though objects and we simply can't have that.

Why does it matter only your face is seen on your info, and only people who want to see your hole body can even see the height...
tinfoil hat time!
Why you think CCP tested out plex for gfx cards?
So people can afford to run WiS... 80 bill will get you a cool 4way SLI, then you can use WiS with 8 other people! Also likely just the people who had 80 bill around. |

Speaking of kinky, when are we going to get Gallente fashions back? My wardrobe is decidedly minmatar right now and my character could with something floor length, elegent, and designed by Libidex. Also "WHERE'S MY HAIRARIUM?!!!"
