On 11 November I took my computer in to Best Buy for a basic RAM upgrade. (Okay those of you who say I shouldn't have gone there in the first place read on...)
The Geek Squad tech hooked up my comp, ran some diagnostics on it, and came back telling me what RAM I could upgrade to etc. He then started trying to sell me a new Gateway system saying, "as a gamer it has everything you need!" I told him repeatedly that I only wanted the simple RAM upgrade and didn't want a new system. He then opened a video card, a 9000 series nVidia and tried pushing it into the existing case and slots telling me see your case doesn't take the new cards and you need a new case. By this time I was running late for work and told him I needed to go and would bring the comp in the next day. Took the comp home and nothing on monitor but lines and garbage. Took it back and guess what. "Sir your motherboard is fried you need a new system!"
I complained to management, a useless piece of work named Melissa, and she said, "sorry can't help you because you can't prove the comp worked when you brought it in. But we'll give you a $100 gift card for your trouble." Called corp and basically same thing. This despite the fact that their surveillance footage could easily show that my comp DID work when I brought it in because the tech booted it up and it ran fine.
Bottom line folks. DON'T DO BUSINESS WITH BEST BUY! Not only do they not care about the customer but in this case the tech actively sabotaged my computer in an effort to sell me a new system I didn't want. They told me it would take $200 for new mb and labor putting it in. But they said they wouldn't even give me that. Told me their surveillance footage "jumps around" and doesn't show me at the front desk at all all so can't see if my comp works. Liars and thieves!!
Please add your comments beneath this. They won't even come up with the $200 they admit it cost to fix their damage. I want to cost them more than that in lost sales. If you are looking to buy gear and decide not to go to Best Buy because of this let me know please. I want to at least get the satisfaction of hurting them the only place they care. In the wallet!!!

RAM is the easiest thing to upgrade in your computer.
If there's one thing you should learn to do yourself, it's that.

Should've done it yourself, bestbuy sucks, etc. etc.
That being said, keep pusing. Continue calling management and corporate offices, and contact the BBB. Do whatever you can to drag them through the mud. There was a lady who had a laptop that bestbuy ****ed up and she made it to the national media.

This. Don't let them get away with it.
I used to work at Futureshop (a Canadian electronics store similar to Best Buy), and we loved Best Buy. Why? Because a good portion of our regular customers were people who had gotten screwed over by BB and came over to us.
You know what's the best thing to do? Find out how the BB corporate management chain works, and send a letter explaining your trouble to the store manager's boss. CC it to the store manager and tech services manager. That scares the **** out of them, and you'll find that things get addressed much quicker.
Alternately, if that doesn't work you have more ammo when you make a fuss about it with the watchdog organization. ---

Not surprising in the least. Think about this for a moment:
You hand your computer over to someone else You trust them not to screw it up You trust them not to had you
These three alone were your mistakes. The moment he started pushing you to get a new system you should have gone red and told the little punk to boot the computer up right then and there. In my opinion 1 of 2 things happened:
1. the tech messed something up, knew it, and in a weak attempt to save his ass tried to sell you on a better computer.
2. the tech deliberately fried your mobo so you would have to get a new computer.
In either case you should NEVER let your computer leave your sight for even a instant, thats all it takes for them to screw something up. Its just like the auto repair industry, plenty of shops out there know they can get more out of your wallet if they spray some loose oil, take you back there, and show your seals are rotten. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:
Players who post are like stars, there are bright ones and those who are dim.

Edited by: Reven Cordelle on 28/11/2008 10:12:25 My PC has been hand-forged by my own rough, haggard hands. Case cuts, blued fingers from coolant and grazes from heatsinks. The coolant routing and RAM Clocking was an original design of DeVinci, recovered from ancient old scripture that was told of in the long-lost prophecy of the ancients.
The case was built from dark-steel, only available in the very demonistic core of the known world, accessed from a derelict mine abandoned in the early ages due to "unholy auras".
Or not.
Either way, I would never in a million years let any degenerate in some random store to touch even the air filters on my case, let alone try and jam a graphics card into it.
Hell, I can imagine taking it in and one of them going;
"What is this? Liquid Cooling? See what happens if I yank out this pipe? All of it goes everywhere! OLD TECHNOLOGY! Upgrade to this OFFICIAL OEM HEATSINK and see your CPU Temperatures drop! ALSO BUY THIS NEW DVD REWINDER"
The fact you went into a store to replace RAM is ridiculous, seriously. Just crack the biznizzle open... google for a PC hardware forum and just get hands on.
Learn by doing - its the best way.

Edited by: Benco97 on 28/11/2008 11:18:12 Well I'm sorry for all the trouble you seem to be having but in the long run this could save you a lot of money, use this as an incentive to learn how to do it yourself. As others have said, changing your RAM is almost literally the easiest thing you can do to a computer, you open the case, take out old RAM, insert new RAM, close case. You don't need to undo any screws on the motherboard or anything like that, it'll be little plastic hinges.
Really there is nothing about changing computer hardware that is difficult, these days everything is colour coded and designed in such a way that you pretty much CAN'T plug something in the wrong place or upside down, you just CAN'T, it won't fit. The only thing that you could possibly mess up would be extra USB pinouts but you're free to just leave them alone if you don't care about having twenty goddamn USB slots.
Seriously, learn from this and you'll look back and laugh. Take a look inside your broken PC, everything is labelled, it's all really straightforward and simple. You've got the big motherboard, attached to that are expansion cards (like graphics accelerators and modems), The RAM (you probably have two or four RAM slots, they are easily recognizable, just sticks of chips), the CPU (probably the first thing your eye was drawn to, it'll no doubt have a big square aluminium heatsink with a fan on top) and then the drives(connected via a tangled web of cables). That's it really, anything you want to change just pops right out of the motherboard with no fuss at all.
Find a book about it, read it, feel better for it.
EDIT- Obviously you have to ensure that any parts you place in a computer are compatible, not just anytihng will work in anything. That's why I say get a book, a good one should explain timings, socket differences and all that jazz.

^^ this^^
The first comp I owned I built myself. Went to a computer fair, bought all the stuff I needed by asking each stall holder what they recommended and worked out who was good, who was a con artist and then gave my money to those who were truthful. They even put the cpu and heat sink on for me before I left. Since then i've built over 20 comps for myself, my family and friends. It really is very easy to build your own and upgrade your own these days. Dont trust stores, they're only out to maximise profits by scrweing the customer. Look around and work out what you want. Then compare prices/delivery charges etc. Its the only way for the serious computer geek these days.

All this talk of how to change RAM and not a single post about earthing yourself. Static kills your dreams, people!
I suggest never giving your computer to some spotty-oik who is trying to sell you something. Computer maintenance and building is pretty easy, perhaps find a book about it and get stuck in?

It's pretty difficult to damage a RAM stick even if you have static on you. You'd need to be literally fizzing with static. And touching the computer case tends to earth you anyway. ____________________

Plus its tons more fun when you're tinkering with a power supply that is, still plugged in to a socket that is on. And you put your finger in "That place" yep, i did it once and i frickin enjoyed it, is that a bad thing |

True, I should have mentioned something about that but I didn't want to cause alarm and scare the idea out of his head. Static CAN kill your pc's components that's true but you DON'T need some fancy anti-static mat or wristband, just make sure you earth yourself periodically. Myself I just touch the radiator in any room before starting and whenever I brush my hair back (goddamn girl hair in my eyes all the time) and then, because I'm paranoid, every few mins anyway. Also, don't build a computer wearing Wellington boots, a woolly jumper, a knitted hat and mittens while rubbing balloons all over yourself. |

Sorry but, can you undoubtedly demonstrate what you say here? Do you have any means to prove this point? Is it possible that in the proccess of taking the PC to your home you may have damaged the motherboeard in any way? (a small crack in it it's enough, for example.) Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against you, but you are making such bold statements here that one might think you can prove them. ----

Walk in with a baseball bat or similar, im assuming they have a nice selection of flat screen TVs. Take the bat to the flat screens or somthing similar until you are satisfied that they have paid for your damages, go quietly if the police pick you up. If you go to court over it try to get tried by a jury, they will be sympathetic to you.

Really I don't go to best buy often, I went there to buy some CD/DVD-R's and once to look for a mouse which they didnt have but the sales guy tried to push me to buy another mouse, I didn't even want to deal with him so I said ok, I'll take and tossed it away on the way to the register.
I don't like Best Buy.
