Howdy!
I just started playing the other day and have a newly-acquired Wreathe (2 low, 2 med, 1 high). I've literally just picked up enough skills that I can fly the ship. I also picked up shield ops, afterburner, and industry at 1 with mining at 2 and a few other basics (Electronics) at 3.
Being that I'm a new player, what would be a few good entry-level modules to pick up that I could start doing a bit of mining and maybe transporting some goods?
Thank you!

That to begin with. Though I would work into a mining cruiser then go for mining barge on your way to hulk.
This might help a bit.

So in this case, someone else would be mining and I'd be carrying their load - or, alternatively, I'd be fulfilling buy orders on the market by transferring large amounts of goods around? |

be aware of Marin Trading.
that is a skill that allows you to place a buy order without placing the full amount of isk in escrow. That means if someone placed a buy order but when you want to fulfill it and he douse not have enough isk in his wallet, you get an error and the buy order disappears from market. some sneaky people place such orders and trick you in to buying their overly expensive stuff in one system , and you think you just need to fly a few jumps and get a big reword. |

Only exception might be while you are still noob-ish and are trying to trade NPC good (ie medical supplies, garbage, quafe, etc) |

right now, mining really does not pay as well as shooting at things. if you do not care that much about earning money or are really into mining, you should still consider mining in a cruiser, as someone else mentioned. if you really want to keep using your wrathe, consider running distribution missions. |

First off, use ships appropriate for the task you want to accomplish. The Wreathe is an small industrial ship (a cargo transport) and thats what it should be used for - hauling stuff.
If you want to mine (which right now probably is the best way to make isk when your are brand new to the game - level 1 missions and basic trading does not pay that much at this level), I suggest aquiring a mining frigate for starters. Every race has 6 tech 1 frigates: 2 combat, 1 scout, 1 exploration, 1 electronic warfare and 1 mining.
The Minmatar mining frigate is the Burst, it comes with 5% bonus to cargo capapicty and 20% bonus to mining laser yield for each level of the minmatar frigate skill you train. In addition it uses far less capacitor to power the mining lasers than other frigates. Further down the road you can upgrade into a mining cruiser, the Minmatar one is the Scythe, which also comes with 20% bonus to mining laser yield for each level of the minmatar cruiser skill you train. Since it can fit more mining lasers, it will mine more than the frigate assuming the same skill levels.
If you still want to pursue a mining career, cross train into the specialized ORE Mining barges, the Retriever beeing the best starter ship in that class. Training into mining barges and ulitamtely tech 2 exhumers will increase your income significantly, but be aware that the time investment in training the necessary skills is also considerable. |

If you're playing Buy-Low-Sell-High, beware of low sec. I lost a few industrials when I was starting out, tempted by a rock bottom sell order or a sky high buy order somewhere on the wrong side of a stargate. The monsters that lurk there have no mercy. It won't matter to them if you're a month old toon in a noobie hauler with all your ISK in the world tied up in the cargo you're carrying. You'll probably have to stick to high sec, and you'll probably find that you aren't making much money. The margins on NPC trade goods are pretty thin, and the volume of goods involved in profitable trades usually isn't that great. Sometimes you can find planetary goods produced by players dumped on the market for cheap, though, and certain types of those can be worth your while. If you can establish your base near the boarder where two or three different regions meet, you can scan prices in each region and probably find a larger spread than just within one region's market, but you're looking at longer hauls. Your profit-per-jump might not increase at all.
Perhaps the best routes are those linking the big racial trade hubs with the mother of all markets in Jita. Differences between the availability of certain raw goods can lead to hefty margins in the manufactured goods they go into, and the different requirements of mission runners leads to higher or lower demands. But beware, these routes are rife with pirates. You probably have nothing to worry about for now, but when the day comes that your cargo is worth more than the replacement price of a ship than can blow you up you'll become a target for suicide gankers. In a Wreathe almost anything could rip you apart before help arrives, but high sec pirates are usually looking for bigger fish. Once you get into a Mammoth you start looking mighty interesting to them, and the sort of ball park figure of what it would cost to pop one is 75 million. Carrying anything more than 100M in a Mammoth is considered foolish. |

Wow, thank you everyone for the great responses!
And sorry that this has become more about me just asking noob questions instead of ship fittings.
I was running Electronic Parts in my Wreathe for a while last night until I got Industrial II. I went and bought a Hoarder with 3 nice ~27%ish cargo expanders and started running Quafe in a low sec area. I was carrying around 120k units of Quaffe and had to run through a few low sec systems to sell it. Half way through unloading someone started following me and, at my final destination (0.3 area, and thankfully after selling), he and his friend attacked me outside the station and then blew up my pod.
I think I may try fitting out my Burst for mining. As I understand, I could leave a secure cargo container of some kind near an astroid belt to fill up and then pick it up intermittently with my Hoarder - is that accurate?
I'm also working on a few skills so I can equip cargo optimizers and a warp balancer. I think a warp balancer as well as some shield extenders probably would have saved my first Hoarder.
Thanks again to everyone for all of the advice!

You need to anchor the container to stop someone stealing the contents.
If someone decides to gank your industrial, there's basically no hope for it. I lost a Wreathe myself the other week to a gatecamp; jumped into lowsec, someone was lurking there in a command ship. Locked, dead in a few salvos. I lost 3mil of ship, modules, and cargo. Joke was on him; nothing dropped, and I was gone before he could lock my pod. Then he couldn't station-camp me because I had an insta-undock bookmark set up. |

you can avoid getting your pod blown up by instantly warping to a random target. you can even manually eject from your ship before it is destroyed. do not try to jump through a gate or dock, that will not work because leaving your exploding ship triggers your "session change timer" which will prevent you from using jump gates or docking to stations for 10 (30?) seconds. |
