I've tried this game 3 times, this being my 3rd time, and this time, after getting used to it, I was really enjoying it.
I've spent the last two weeks working tirelessly to get a ship, mine resources, etc, and because of one false move into a 0.4 system, I'm dead, and all the mining equipment/resources I've worked hours to get have gone to pot in a few seconds.
Such a shame.
Most of you will accuse me of 'whining', and go on to furiously protect the game, but I don't see how EVE will ever continue to gain members with two weeks of work going in a minute due to one mistake.
Thanks all.

You had all your isk tied up in one ship and took it into low-sec?
Would you empty your savings account and walk around the local drug dealer alleyways at night?
Can i have your....oh you lost it all, nevermind

As I said repeatably, it was a mistake which I made by turning off the 'don't choose routes through low sec' (I wasn't using auto-pilot either).
And hilarious. How witty of you.

Because many players don't sink two weeks of work into a single ship. They only buy ships that cost a few hours to replace.
Those that do sink weeks into a single ship take a great deal of care with their investment.
There is the possiblity that this is simply not the right type of game for you. Then again, you might enjoy rising from the ashes and the sense of accomplishment in a victory that can only be felt when there is a significant risk of failure.

Sorry to hear you're taking the loss that way. Personally, I think that if there wasn't that kind of risk in EVE it wouldn't be the same game. The adrenaline you get taking something big and expensive through dangerous space (and the converse, finding something big and expensive) is what sets this game apart from anything I've ever played before. To put it another way, the mundane grinding which funds those brief moments is what makes them so gut-wrenchingly terrifying. Beats Ravenholm any day. It does take a certain mental disposition though to have all your hard work disappear so quickly and get over the frustration (and anger as is so often the case)...EVE's a unique beast...

Well here's the thing, as you rightly said it was a mistake, the question is do you learn from your mistake or just quit.
Eve is a game that's not that kind to people that can't take a few setbacks.

And yet, since it's birth, it's done exactly that. People have come and gone saying exactly the same as you, and EVE has continued to grow.
That's just the kind of game EVE is. Some people like the fact that there is a risk.

Do not undock with a ship that takes you several weeks to earn. Only fly what you can earn back in a few days of game play. EVE has a harsh death penalty but it can be avoided. Just think through everything you do before you jump on doing it.

EVE has continued to grow for the last 5.5 years under the exact conditions you complain about. Many people have lost a lot more then two weeks worth of work to one mistake and continue to play. The fact that you cannot see it growing despite the clear objective evidence that it has been growing for years, and will likely continue to do so, speaks more to your lack of imagination than anything. ----------------------------------------------------

Edited by: Sir Substance on 10/12/2008 04:06:49 i actually like it. someone mentioned gut wrenching terror.
i have never encountered a game that can do that without going horror. eve is capable of producing elation without using achievements and ranks. it can produce terror, horror and anger without using zombies and daemons.
its the only game i know that can do that.
anyway, another interesting thing about eve is people do help each other. send me a mail so i know you haven't rage quitted, and ill happily top up your bank balance a bit, so you can get in that barge or whatever it was again
my only requirement for this service is that when you are in the same position as i am, you help someone else the same way. - PvPers always say "GB2WoW". the message is that EVE is hard, and people just need to deal with it. wasn't it funny how when nano's started making it hard for *them*, that all went out the window? |

EVE has been growing ever since its creation, and it used to be far worse than it is now. If you can't tolerate that making mistakes in EVE results in loss then this isn't the game for you. You're not going to elicit sympathy by posting on the forums; I don't really know what you were trying to accomplish here.

The best way to overcome a loss like this is to pull yourself up by the bootstraps and go out and make somebody else cry. Losing your mining ship hurt because it was so hard to get -- but that's what makes the game great. You have things of real value in it and you can lose them just like that. Didn't it make your heart beat faster? In EVE, both the good guys and the bad guys are human players. It's up to you to choose which one you want to be!

And that's PRECISELY why EVE is growing : because it's the only decent game around that lets you do it. Some people actually like it that way, and that's who most long-time EVE players are - there's just no other place where they can find something like that.

Just a few days ago there was, and still is available for you to read, a news story of a pilot making a mistake.

That was not your mistake. Your mistake was not checking your route. I check every route the autopilot plots, without exception. It's really easy too, since all you have to do is look for orange/red dots on the left of your screen. If you can't handle such a simple thing when you're undocking your entire wealth, EVE may not be for you.

There is a challenge to this game and some folks take longer to learn "how" to play this game than others. It can be very painful for a new person that just jumps right in there and thinks they can rule the world.
Remember just because you can sit in the seat doesnt mean you can fly it.
Sometimes ya just gotta take some of these guys under your wing and teach them the ropes.. then they become productive members of the corp and they might actually have some fun.

Bingo!
Now, don't get me wrong. I still have my active accounts in other games. It's good for a bit of harmless (and I mean that literally) fun every now and again. Though I have to admit, Fallout 3 is proving to be the same, without a recurring subscription fee.
I like the fact that I have to be "on point" every moment I'm online. Right now, most of the ships I regularly fly can be easily replaced but it wasn't always like that. I'm sure everyone can think of a time when they were new that they suffered what seemed like an unrecoverable loss. But, just like in life, you either roll up into a fetal position and "give up the ghost" or you stand up, dust yourself off, and get back what you lost. I remember my Vince Lombardi wannabe football coach in high school who used to throw around clichT sayings like: "The only thing worse than losing, is quitting." and "The difference between a winner and a loser is a winner gets up one more time than he falls." (or the more succinct "Get knocked down five times, get up six").
I dunno about the OP but I've never let a game whoop my ass and I don't (and didn't) plan to start. All of the games that vexed me and turned me off (from Legacy of the Ancients to Daggerfall to TecmoBowl and on and on) finally fell to persistence. You can quit if you want, it's your choice. But quitting because of your own humanity (you made a mistake, you didn't lose your stuff to a bug) seems kinda short-sighted to me.

And hilarious. How witty of you.
even if you turn that option off. when you set your route, check the dots on the left, if they are lowsec you will tell by the color.
and if you then decide to go to lowsec anyway, then you need to be aware of your surroundings. check local. never "warp to 0m".
there are several precautions you can take aside from turning the route option on, to save you from a gank.
join a corp, if you get ganked, you will more than likely be able to borrow some isk from a corp mate for a new ship. _____________________ *warp drive acti...wait, where are we going?*
