what are you using? i play with premium graphic and it looks and feels same like windows. i use wine & win prem client with suse 11. there are some things to do after installation of cause, but you can find most of this setting here.
the only probs i have is after starting a second client at the same time. one of the started clients always crashes after a couple of minutes.

It's not crap, it just isn't as good as it could be. Wine still has some issues, like F11 not working.

EVE works great for me under Wine. I run the classic graphics until I upgrade my game-rig. But going by what you have posted, my best guess is that you are using the Official EVE Linux Client which right now is garbage IMO.
Try the Windows Premium Client under Wine and you may be in for a pleasant surprise.

I use the official client (Given its the only thing CCP supports right now unlike WINE) and wouldn't go to say it's unusable. After hours of gameplay, I do experience performance depreciation over time and the occasional visual glitch I don't experience crashes and the like.
While it is true the EvE on Linux is far buggier than EvE on windows, it does give a Linux amateur enthusiast the opportunity to play without having to hack the hell out your Linux distro or wine settings (as you do need to with several other games). Mind you playing games in general in linux is far more complicated, and requires alot of care in picking hardware and the like. If you have crap hardware or hardware which by design is only meant to run on windows, then you are likely to have problems.

Unfortunately, the official client is more or less a pile of hopeless junk right now, even half-acknowledged by CCP+TG at the Fanfest.
The alternative, being unsupported, makes you jump thru a lot of POTENTIAL hoops. Some video cards won't work. Some distros will have specific problems. Some gfx driver versions (I dare to say revisions, even!) will give you garbage, when the previous or the next one will be flawless. Some combinations of audio drivers/audio cards/setups will drive you nuts before you can figure out how to configure them.
All of this considering a mix of kernel versions, kernel features, driver versions, game versions, WINE versions, it's sort of a miracle that some combinations work. ;)
Or just the usual Linux community, used to be able to patch its own bug/features. --- Kate [ Recruitment | HKG | G0DS ] |

It seems that I have to give wine a shot then. ATM I use the official client because I need to let eve run in a window. Is this still possible with the wine version or do it only run under fullscreen?
Well - It's true that my hardware isnt that uber - however, under windows it runs severy times better and smoother than it does under linux and this makes me just sad. Currently my work costs me nearly the whole day and because I do all my work under linux I likely want to play the few hours I have under linux and dont waste my time with rebooting and switching between systems. So thats the reason why I try to play eve under linux and thats the reason why I'm so disappointed about this performance and the tons of bugs...
Well - I need to read the stuff about eve with wine. Maybe (I hope) all will be better with wine...

I originally started out running EvE on the official client when I switched over. Performance was a huge drop in comparision to my windows setup, but I was done with windows at the time. I eventually tried to run it under wine, and I will be honest with you that you will most likely spend a little time setting up EVE under wine the first time. Once I got everything worked out though, I get great performance (at least as good as I did with windows). BTW, my F11 key works great as of a patch or 2 ago.
Also helpful tip, if your gear isn't stellar, and you notice that everytime you click in space you get a "micro freeze" -- rapidly clicking can bring your frame rate down noticably -- , then try removing the wine registry edit that you are going to be told involving "fbo". That made a huge difference in my performance.

CCP is supporting TG/cedega because they agreed to the support requirements that CCP needed. Wine/crossover refused to do this. TG/CCP admitted that they BOTH bit off more than they could chew originally and thus the problems and limitations with the official client. (MAC is included in this as they are limited to 'classic' with cider as well.)
From Fanfest, both TG and CCP reps indicated they have gotten over the rough patch, and are now finishing up a new "official" client. Those at fanfest got a peek at this, and it does do shader 3 and the whole 9 yards, with new installer/config tools, etc. Wine is currently the better solution as it DOES most of shader model 3 (not all...thus shadows not working and limited hdr).
As for regular "cedega", it does do very well with quite a few games that are problematic in one way or another via wine. And wine does better with some things than cedega does.
I personally test both clients (official and wine) and am glad we have choice and the ability to play EVE.
So the future (soon-tm) looks bright either way we go.
---it also appears that Stefan Dosinger (3d games guru for wine) is getting very close to finishing new gfx stuff for wine, so that is also good news.

I know the feeling well. Hopefully in the near future the offical client will catch up, but till then, wine is definately the way to go (though on my laptop I have been unable to get it to work :( ). ________________________

Viktor, I really don't want to say it, but...
WE TOLD YOU!
Welcome back in the land of the happy linux gamers! Probably everyone who is suggesting WINE nowadays passed thru your same "omg unbelievable" jaw drops.
And yes, CCP supporting linux thru Cedega is next to shameful. But, oh well, business is business, and not every company picks its partners wisely.
Don't look back thinking what you've been missing so far. Look forward, and start experiencing EVE on linux as it should be. --- Kate [ Recruitment | HKG | G0DS ] |

Originally by: ace togge I've been dying to try this out on linux.. Have any of you tried wine & premium on a fleet fight ?
I have used linux (wine + Premium) in a number of fleet fights. I haven't done any fleet fights on TQ since Quantum Rise was released, but I did do the fleet fights they had on test server when testing the new UI changes. My fps has generally been as good or better than equivelent Windows machines. Particularly with the new UI changes, in the fleet fight tests they had on Singularity I was able to maintain 10 fps (with brackets off, etc) with no module lag.
I will be honest in saying that with the most recent patch (i've only noticed this on test server) I get a lot of random crashes ... almost exclusively associated to arranging my weapon slots in my overview while in space. Other than that and the annoying crash bug associated with your client losing focus - switching to something in linux other than your client - (it's talked about in other places), it is completely rock solid.
Incidently, the client crash when focus is lost is new, and people believe it is a result of using the most recent development versions of wine.
I will give you the warning now, you will probably end up having to fight with it for a bit to get it to work right. Also, spend the time to tweak it to get better performance. Once I got EVE running on Linux, i never booted Windows on this machine again (for any random things that has to have windows -- you do come across them -- I use Virtualbox). In fact, I've been looking at wiping out my windows partitions to make more space. ________________________

I had some graphic bugs like the overfilled chat-window on the cedega client. The text in the chat window goes approx. the double of the window size which overlapped with some other informations above the window. Make it very hard to read the stuff which is overlapped then. Furthermore the FPS on cedega were somewhere near a diashow while with the same machine but using wine I can have a game which makes fun again. Also the responsiveness of the whole UI was very bad using cedega and is smooth like under windows with wine. All together - I nerver will use cedega again untiul there are breaking news about this.. btw: I recently laughed loudly after I read the news about the "OMGWTFBBQSAUCAGE-Client speed boost"-thingy. At that time I started my cedega client and saw quiet _nothing_ changed. I asked myself wtf ccp is talking about. All was crappy like ever.
However - now I can finally play eve on linux again with wine! That rocks like hell and I like it much now.
A little issue tho - one char in jita have big problems with the contract-links posted in the local chat. If there are many of them (which only needs a few seconds until there are that 'many') they make my client 'flicker'. If I'm not able to minimize the local fast enought the whole client crash. But this issue only showes up in jita atm and I think this is related to the contract links posted in the local.
Wish all fun with eve under linux :)

Generalization ftl.
I've been playing EVE on Linux via wine for 3 years now. Classic client.
Couple graphics glitches - no big deal.
I did pvp with it.
No more crashes than what I got on windows. --- Save the forum: Think before you post. ISK BUYER = LOSER EVE TV- Bring it back!

You can also set to desktop mode in winecfg which helps stability. If your like me and do multiple things alot. It also seems to increase FPS slightly. -----------------------------------

Lately things have been just getting better. As of late even the f11 mini-map is working! I wonder how I lived without it. On the other hand some things could be improved, the focus bug being the most egregious-makes it hard changing channels in vent/teamspeak. Sound is a bit flaky as well with pronounced stuttering on continuous sounds, though not all the time, and I still haven't gotten EVE voice to recognize my mic. This is probably more likely a wine bug as Ventrilo has the same problem, though it never stutters, whereas teamspeak with its native client is smooth. Theres still the odd out of place texture, but this has become much rarer.

Its sad but true but the official client isnt there yet, in my experience using wine with the windows client still works better. (yes even the premium client) Signature removed. Please do not imply profanity in your signature. Navigator
