I just took a call at work from the Natwest, the conversation went something like this:
Natwest woman: ôHi, IÆd like to invite you in for a financial reviewö Me: ôCan you just email me your last three yearÆs accounts, IÆll take a look and get back to youö Natwest woman: ôNo Sir, itÆs a financial review, we invite you in, work through your outgoings and try to help you save moneyö Me: ôI appreciate your concern, if I was interested in that sort of thing IÆd ask. I made the assumption you were asking me for helpö Natwest woman (Laughing): ôSir, I think you misunderstandà..ö Me: ôWhat that your financial institution needed to be bailed out with taxpayerÆs money that weÆll still be paying for over the next couple of decadesö Natwest woman: ôWeÆre just trying to helpö Me: ôItÆs a bit cheeky, as IÆm aware that you are costing me moneyö
I get the distinct impression that if I were to take them up on their offer, the solution to my financial woes would be for me to accept more of their not so competitive products that donÆt even reflect the base rate of interest. It seems that Banks in the UK arenÆt attempting to adapt to the current climate and are still prepared to push their customers into debt, maybe not through mortgages but through unsecured loans and credit cards. We should have let them burn when the chance came along.
I hate the capitalist Christmas everyone around me seems to be forced into complying with too, which is only encouraged by the Banks, retailers AND the mediaà.regardless of how much itÆll cost you in the long run, youÆve gotta spend spend spendà..****ing ****.
Meh, IÆm a cynical bugger this morning.

I hate banks. They offer you money when you don't really need it; but as soon as you get into a little financial trouble and need a helping hand, they're the first to pull the rug from under you. Also, their staff lie through their teeth.

I don't want my parents to think I hate them, I just want them to know I don't like hallmark holidays. Because telling them doesn't work.

My bank's been a real ***** about holding checks lately. They want to hold it 2-3 days because I have no history with them, which is utter horse**** because I've been with them for 3 years. I'm thinking of leaving them for someone who won't mess around with my money collecting interest on it while I'm having to wait for it.

Just go there and talk to somebody. Tell them just that. "You're collecting interest of MY money. Stop it or I'll get my service someplace else."
Then wait for them to stop that or get your service someplace else.
Who was the guy that said "It's a bigger crime to found a bank than to rob it"? Thomas Mann? Berthold Brecht? I always forget.

Absolute class bro. I'd buy you a beer but am guessing your corp is a brewery
I closed my natwest account a couple of years back after some major problems. I think since RBS bought them their cust svcs has gone through the floor. I had ú16 or something cleared in my acc, and buy something for ú6 online. A day later, a DD for ú80 comes in and obviously bounces. They charge me ú27.50 because of that, followed by a further ú15 charge for being overdrawn without an overdraft. Then the online transaction clears and I get hit for card misuse and a further 'trying to use card while overdrawn' charge. Net effect was I suddenly owed them about ú100 in charges.
I phoned up and while I admitted the bounced DD was clearly my fault, the rest was bollox and they had no right to charge me for going overdrawn as a result of a charge they put on my acc. It took a few calls over a few days but eventually I told them that I WAS going to close the account, I WASN'T going to pay any of the charges (except the DD one) and they could either let us part ways civilly or burn any remaining bridges as I curse their name forevermore. The dude thankfully understood and a day later, after I withdrew the 2 remaining pence in the acct (after refunds) the clerk cut my card into 12 pieces in front of me and I've never set foot in one since Barclays FTW. -------------

If only we could!
This is how it used to be before the government decided banks would be better for everybody because they will lie to you, spend your money to make millions of which you see very little in return and help you into dept but not get out of it.
I'm just glad i have only ever been in dept once (except my student loan) which I got out of pretty quickly. Money grabbing bastards, thats what banks are!

Heh. They're full of it aren't they?
HSBC called me up a while ago (when they needed to increase their deposits)
Guy from bank: 'Hi this is [so and so] from HSBC, I'm just looking at your account..' Me: 'You are? Why?' Guy: 'uh, well I see you have a large sum of money in your current account and..' Me: 'Why are you looking at my account and how do I know you're from the bank?' Guy: 'oh we're just trying to save people money by making sure you use your savings account' Me: 'So how do I know you're from the bank?' Guy: 'well I'm looking at your account' Me: '-sigh- you're just trying to move money into non-current accounts so you can say you have more money in deposits than the other banks aren't you?' Guy: 'no, we're just trying to help, would you like to move the money?' Me: 'no it's in the current account for a purpose'
Then, last month I looked at opening a business account for a new venture and they turned me down (admittedly the business is kinda gambling related). So I'm in the middle of moving banks and if I make a ton of ú's with the new business they're not getting a penny of it.
They're all useless though.

It's kind of worrying when many customers can look after their money better than the banks look after their own money.

That's always been my complaint about them taking days to clear a cheque in the UK. With computers now, it can be cleared in seconds so why the delay if it isn't to squirrel it away to make interest for them while you wait. I can go to an ATM across the other side of the world and draw out cash instantly, it doesn't take days to check my balance for that.
They make more than enough in various charges so it's really surprising that the banks are in financial trouble themselves. Maybe they should stop paying fat cat salaries and start telling their shareholders that bonuses will be lower this year due to economic problems instead of stripping us of even more hard earned cash to pay them full whack. They are always telling you to put some money aside for a rainy day, maybe it's time they took their own advice instead of paying massive bonuses to shareholders whenever they hit a peak. It would give them resources to ride out recessions without having to be bailed out by the tax payer.

Edited by: Daxel Magmalloy on 19/12/2008 13:53:45 One time I got charged 38 GBP by my bank because a transaction (to CCP as it happens) took longer than I thought it would take through Paypal and when it went through, the money wasn't in the account which is why they charged me an overdraft fee.
They justified this by saying that I had signed a document when I opened the account giving them permission to charge a fee in that situation. I pointed out that 38 pounds was a ridiculous amount for something like that, and the guy on the other end of the phone seemed to agree with me and refunded it. Then the next day I went in to the bank and signed another document which meant they couldn't do that.
Seems to me they will unscrupulously do anything and everything they can to weasel money out of their customers. That is the modern banking culture for you and I don't think it's going to get changed unless the government actively change it.

Fixed it for ya.
FYI, many politicians are shareholders. This is probably why the Bank Of England was given the responsibility of handling the interest rates. Giving that responsibility to someone who has a vested interest in keeping them high is like handing out loaded guns to criminals.
That original document is signed under duress so it has no legal value. If you refuse to sign it, you won't get an account. Since a bank or building society account is essential for modern life, you are forced to sign it and they damn well know it. No company pays wages in cash any more so you have no choice, even dole money is paid through the bank now. However, they use clauses in the contract to charge excessive amounts on the basis that they know most people don't understand the law regarding contracts. People just don't realise that the contract cannot be enforced because it was invalidated by duress. That is probably why they were quite happy to let you sign the other document rather than risk you taking them to court about it.
