On three shiny floors of a former fish factory is CCP, a company best known in computer gaming for Eve Online, which has 300,000 participants all over the world - as many inhabitants as Iceland itself. However, restrictions on access to foreign currency for individuals and businesses and on foreign investment into Iceland are making life difficult. "To make new games, we need foreign investors," says Eyjolfur Gudmundsson, formerly an assistant professor at the University of Akureyri, who supervises Eve's virtual economy. "The present currency restrictions are putting us in a straitjacket. We are in talks with the government, but if we can't let capital in, we might be compelled to leave Iceland, even though this would be against our wishes."

It would be a real shame to see CCP leave Reykjavik, but if it's the only thing that keeps their brainchild alive then I can fully understand why they'd do it.

Indeed, dont get me started on all the legislature on taxing virtual economies thanks to stick-in-ass bureaucrats on both sides of the Atlantic. -

But CCP has offices outside of Iceland, right? Can't they convert one of those offices into a sister company and use that to get investors? Seems like leaving Iceland is a bit overkill. Anyways, just my 2 cents. --- Captain Braxo - Manufacture & Production - Hadean Drive Yards |

I just hope CCP won't come to USA, otherwise poor bastards will have to deal with a Class Action Lawsuit by some disgruntled ****ers.

Dude, LA? No Way! CCP would spend a fortune on AC bills.
Canada or Upstate NY, that's where they should move and bring servers.

I'm American but I think CCP needs to stay in Europe. Our courts here are completely f***ed up and there will be someone that would file a lawsuit demanding the game to be dumbed down so the idiots can play too.

I thought at FanFest Hilmar (or one of them) said Iceland's economic woes did not particularly affect them. Also as noted above CCP has offices in the US and China. I am not up on all the intricacies of international investment but I would think CCP would have ample opportunity for it regardless if their HQ is in Iceland or Tahiti.

The cluster is *still* in London
Also, CCP should move to Copenhagen. It's not all that different from Reykjavik, only more awesome.

Didn't you read the whole article? It only affects them if they want to pull in investors for a new game. Their current operation is fine.

Nah...
Everyone *thinks* lawsuits are like falling out of bed in the US but it just ain't so. No lawyer will touch the case on a contingency fee basis without some notion that there is a very large payday at the end of it and a very good chance at winning. Without a contingency fee a lawyer would demand money up front. What gamer is going to shell out tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars to stop gate camping (or whatever)?
In short, very very unlikely to happen.

Understood. No idea what all other new games CCP has in mind besides the one in the works but whatever. I still see no reason why they being in Iceland would bar anyone from giving them money to start a new game. -------------------------------------------------- "Of course," said my grandfather, pulling a gun from his belt as he stepped from the Time Machine, "there's no paradox if I shoot you!"

Let's see...
A woman pulls up to McDonald's and buys a coffee, placing it between her legs. Drives off, hits a bump and burns the hell out of her <explicit>. She goes to court and wins because she and her lawyer are idiots.
A man uses a ladder on ice and falls and get's hurt, while the ladder has warnings on it that clearly states not to use it on ice. He wins the lawsuit because he and his lawyer are idiots.
All it would take is a class action lawsuit.

I'd imagine it were the laws which were passed not long ago which restrict any currency going in and our of the country.

Actually CCP is more restricted business wise by being located in Europe. Those crazy Europeans and their labor laws, mandatory vacations and consumer protections. Seesh. Haven't they heard about how great unrestricted "American Style" capitalism is?
Anyway, to set the record straight. I was joking about wanting them to move. They should stay where they are...
But if they have to move. Los Angeles is the place.

Sure you can come up with a number of anecdotes of stupid cases (and actually the McDonald's one is not as egregiously bad as many have been led to assume).
And while class actions are attractive to attorneys wanting a big payday they are not easily done and proving actual damages because you got popped in a gate camp is rather unlikely.

Well if there game is selling in Euro's and Dollars and there government is giving them problems converting to the local currency, I can see how they'd get into a situation where they'd have no choice but to leave.

Well actually McDonalds spent a good deal of time and effort engineering how to keep their coffee in a liquid state well past the boiling point of water. The McDonalds coffee lawsuits where about people that got scalded by superhot water.
Basically the courts said that if you spill regular coffee on yourself you're SOL. If somebody gives you special superhot coffee that is only being kept from converting to steam by some serious engineering then the person who gave you the coffee could be liable. (Seriously, the McDonalds coffee problem is used in advanced math and engineering textbooks to remind folks that just because the equations say that the maximum benefit will be reached at a certain point, that doesn't mean there isn't a real life reason you shouldn't do it).

Not to go too far off topic, but that is exactly the problem with the media reporting on court cases in the US. It leads to this concept people have of stupid lawsuits and greedy lawyers.
I'll keep it short (since entire case studies have been written individual pieces of this court case) The realty of that case is a.) McDonald did have some fault in the matter, b.) An employee mistake actually caused the spill to be possible, c.) The woman recieved major injuries, and d.) The woman recieved a very small percentage of what the media reported (think the total figure was 6 digits, and just barely covered medical bills).
Really our legal system isn't as screwed up as people think. It's just that the average person has no idea what is going on so they assume it is stupid or jump to false conclusions.
------ I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it. |
