That scam is so uttery riduclous, can you please fix it?
We all come from an RL background, and - until being taught otherwise i.e. being victim for the first time - HAVE to assume that a buy order that is being accepted by a seller constitutes a binding contract where both parties are required and enforced by the authorities to fulfill said contract.
There is still enough scam potential with the possibility of a player watching the market and manually removing his fake buy order right before fulfilment, but at least that way there is some risk involved instead of the fail-safe autofail buy orders created via margin trade.
Potential fixes: - allow the margin trader to assign some of her property as collateral via its insurance cost to cover the full amount or - restrict the skill to full accounts only and automatically cancel margin trade buy orders when not covered by wallet + market value of remaining play time (if it were converted into PLEX)

Don't buy from market then turn around sell it back minutes later?
Done, you can't get scammed.
Happen to have the item already in possesion, you had aquired for 1000 isk per unit but trying to fill a 1500 isk per unit...which fails. Well, before hitting accept and making yourself look like a dumb ass...make sure its not 14.99 the order is buying from you.
See, only you can prevent stupid forum rants by admiting you failed by thinking real carefully.

Yeah, this has been brought up a few times. I still say that the only/best way to curb the misuse of it and handle it well is to make it so you can't set your minimum buy order above what your down-payment covers. This would completely nullify the scam while leaving people with a real use for the skill completely untouched.
There are many people that will say that it's Eve, scamming is allowed, get over it. And I agree with that in general, but I take issue with the MT scam in particular. Specifically because it relies on a completely illogical result from an action and is impossible to foresee unless you know about that skill and the nuances of its use already. I'm all for scamming, but I'm against scams that are impossible to spot without foreknowledge of the scam itself. |

Exactly.
Also, it is basically an exploit and not a scam, because the functionality is solely based on a - purely OOC - motivated limitation to prevent people from using that loophole to generate money via debts from destined-to-die accounts.

Well, I was rather new to the trade system, so I assumed (quite naturally, IMO) that the scam was based on an ability/attempt to watch the market and cancel the buy order when a fulfillment seems plausible (i.e. a more or less fair race). Which was admittedly a bit naive, based on another false assumption that 1000 items would be kind of hardish to produce on short notice. |
