Hi,
I have quite some experience with Linux and I have a problem you might have/had.
I run EVE with wine 1.0 and ubuntu 8.04.
All work perfectly until I click on another window. If EVE lose the focus, my EVE hangs up and there is no way back.
I've set all the graphics to the minimum, no GNOME fancy graphics either.
I receive this error when I run EVE from the command line:
wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x0000006c at address 0x10051585 (thread 0019), starting debugger...
Is anyone having an idea how to fix this issue?
Upgrade wine maybe? ---------------------------------------- Look in your wallet, is me on the dollar bill. |

Known bug, you need to open up EVE with a command like this:
wine explorer /desktop=0,1280x960 "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\eve.exe"
Where 1280x960 is whatever resolution you want. Then set EVE to fullscreen mode.

I was here when the bug first came out and when someone (forgot who) figured out that virtual desktops weren't affected.

WINE Bugzilla entry
It's been reported on 30th september. Still present in 1.1.11, the current WINE development release.

I'm finding even in a window Eve is touchy to regaining focus. Absolutely solid as long as I don't bring anything else into focus. After which there is a chance it'll freeze the instant I click back on to the Eve window.
Tested with both 1.1.10 and 1.1.11

I just realised I've actually got windowed mode selected in Eve rather than a virtual desktop. Maybe this is significant.
I've always liked the way I can have a borderless fullscreen window that can be managed along with the rest of the windows.
PS: I'm only back for the 5 day free reactivation period. While the stutter problems are much improved now, I will wait for a skill queue to be added before I'm gonna be stressing over Eve again. I really don't much like organising my life around a game.

What works (sometimes) for me: Esc menu: switch to windowed, slide eve over a bit, do the futzing in desktop, slide eve back (without interacting), esc again, and back to fullscreen. If I try to use the mouse in EVE while switched to windowed mode it's almost a guaranteed loss of focus later, likewise switching to the another virtual desktop.

That's a separate problem. In your case the client is still running. That's one of the features of why I use Eve in a boarderless fullscreen window - I also disable all global desktop shortcuts.
Similar to you, I use the task bar to manage the Eve window rather than any keyboard shortcuts.

What I have recently noticed is that KDE System Guard's process table is reporting ExeFile.exe as having no memory allocated while Eve is in it's frozen state.
