I'm not going to get into a lengthy drawn out discussion on sexes here, but it's a stereotype for a reason and though it does not apply in every single circumstance, it is general enough that it is appropriate to be used as a generalization when I am making a generalized statement about a segment of people... in general. There's nothing sillier than making a generalized statement and having one person say "but I'm not like that!". Well, great for them. General does not mean *every* one.
Anyway, you're right -- there is the rare Danica McKeller from Wonder Years who grows up to be a completely hot math nerd. But for the most part, hot people of both sexes don't become uber nerds and geeks and spend all their time playing videogames or become rocket scientists. Why is that?
The most attractive people of both sexes had things to do from their youth onward. They didn't *have* to be spending their friday and saturday nights learning to program or reading books or looking through a telescope, because they had offers and invitations to go be with other hot people doing cool stuff. That's why they're often more social. And that's why you don't see a lot of smoking hot female CEOs. If it weren't for the fact that men are largely judged by their success and wealth, they wouldn't be CEOs, either. Only the ugliest would be, because they'd be the ones who had to stay in on a saturday night and make their own way.
This isn't sexist (as I say, it applies to all of us anyway). This is just the way the world is and we've all observed it. If you're better looking, you have more opportunities available to you. Hell, if you're taller, you tend to pull a higher salary. That's all there is to it. For the most part, super hot people are not wasting their time in front of a dumb videogame when their other options include hanging out and partying with other hot people. Or being taken out for a good time by people with money.
Besides all of the generalizing, I did also point out that I know several exceptions to the rule. Of course, they all tend to gravitate toward one specific game or genre. But whatever.
I can tell you one thing, if I looked like brad pitt, I wouldn't be playing internet spaceships or developing software for a living and if you looked like Scarlet Johansen, you wouldn't even know what a MMO was, because you'd be off doing cool hot people stuff like hot people are supposed to!
Also, the above does not apply to John Carmack or Cliffy B. :P
Yes, I know I'm a big evil sexist blah blah blah. I was supposed to respond with a bunch of understanding hippy stuff about how we're all individuals and looks have nothing to do with anything. |

I agree, but there is a degree of accepted adolescent desperation and pre-occupation and fascination with anything female that one expects from a kid or a teenager that they usually grow out of by the time they're well into adulthood. Sure, we're all still sex-obsessed morons throughout our lives, but by adulthood, one would presume the majority have gotten it under control enough that they can play and work and co-habitate with the fairer sex without barrages of sexual innuendo and having to hump inanimate objects.
Then again, Idiocracy is revealing itself as a truer depiction with each passing day, so I may have to concede the point to you after all. *sigh* |

I, for one, am grateful for it. As much as I regret that some people can't enjoy the full experience of a game without being hassled, it is definitely not an enjoyable experience to have your entire online experience turned into an idiot frat-boy show-off session by a bunch of pre-pubescent minded jackasses, just because a female is online. Everything is either stopped or severely impacted to the point that the gameplay is flat out useless until the female is gone.
It would be fantastic to play with groups of people that don't get stiff over over everything and could just ****ing play, women involved or not.
With any luck, this will improve with the aging of the gaming population, but since the average gamer is already 29 years old, I don't hold a lot of hope.

Dude, have you ever played any of the non EVE games out there? Uncontrollably masturbating pig-monkeys are actually near the top of the scale when compared with the average homophobic, racist, sexist, xenophobic idiot in online gaming. Sad to say that was the case in the 90s and over a decade later it's still the case. And least the adolescent pre-occupation with a female being in the game is a little more natural and usually not intended maliciously.
Despite the occasional ****heads in EVE, the crowd is a phenomenal improvement over the majority of other games (except perhaps A Tale In The Desert). Spend a couple hours on Halo, Call of Duty, Left for Dead, Counter Strike, Madden... just about anything. *sigh* |

Your postulating that almost universally people would enjoy hanging out with other people than playing this video game and that those that play this video game do it as a fall back plan because their top choices haven't played out for them.
Maybe in most circumstance your right. If so I feel sorry for all those people out there spending their free time doing stuff they consider as second rate backup entertainment because they failed at other "better" stuff.

Fun topic.
About a year ago or so both my wife and I were hot and heavy into WoW. Ran a nice size guild, made websites, the whole 9 yards. When it all came flaming down I stopped playing WoW even though we played it a lot together and instead picked Eve back up.
I thought that she would like Eve, boooooy was I wrong! Even after a year she wants nothing to do with it. She says there is nothing appealing about it, from not seeing your own face (and instead being a ship) to all of the treachery and backstabbing and general ass-hattery going on. For some reason she wants to PLAY a game rather than play in a mosh pit.
I remember reading studies done on why males and females play online games, irc, females tend to play it more for the social aspect and males tend to play it more for the goal and achievement aspects. If you can hold a POS in lowsec in Eve, you have definatly achieved something, but the social aspect of Eve (imho) is rather lacking when compared to other more "game mechanics" friendly online games.
So, in short, my 2 cents is that if Eve truly does lack female participation then it's deeply rooted in Eve game mechanics and nothing else (not even the throngs of horny toads pawing at the female sex).
Can anyone find the website that does nothing but keep statisics on MMORPG, I can't remember it for the life of me. |

There are a few actual women in my corp. I only know what one of them looks like and she is very sexy. All the curves where they should be and very nice curves they are (in anyone's opinion...a genuine hottie). Very cool too and a blast to play with (online...I can only dream of playing with her in person). Unfortunately (for me and the rest of us) she is happily married.
Been many years but I recall seeing pics of a few women who were members of Jericho Fraction (I think). All European in this case and model class sexy -- really stunning to see (and I have good reason to believe they were legitimate pics as they were with other EVE players hanging at a pub or somesuch). No idea if any of them still play. Was a long time ago now.
So yeah, there are some.
