Edited by: arbiter reformed on 10/01/2009 11:47:58 been flying around eve for a few years now. i can remember back in the day goin to different systems and being in awe of how cool they looked. but that quickly wore off and now i dont pay atention to space backgrounds at all.
been looking at hubbl's photos recently and thought why not make eve space absolutly stunning in some places, even go as far to say as make it 3d so we can sit in the middle of huge clouds of gas instead of it just being a fixed picture.
ofcourse i understand eve needs to be dark and mysterios so why not make some systems very bland and some full of anomalies,

I'd like it if EVE finally let us chose to remove the damn sun so we can see the UI properly. Or fix the UI so it doesn't blend. The later option would be better, having the UI more customizeable (and not so ugly.. it looked better years ago, last two-three changes just made it worse and worse) would be a huge improvement to the basic game enjoyment. |

First, that isn't a 'real' image. It's a false colour image produced from a range of both visible and invisible wavelengths of light. Second, that is a few hundred lightyears across, probably comparable in size to the whole eve 'universe'. Third, personally I would like space to look less like that. I don't want to see huge swathes of colour in every system. It's unrealistic, and frankly ruins immersion. I support CCP adding in more unique content in certain systems, but make it realistic like the eve-gate (I know it's not very realistic, but at least it doesn't break immersion). Landmarks are good, but psychedelic backgrounds are NOT good. In fact, in many cases these bright backgrounds actually interfere with trying to use the UI, which is ALWAYS bad. |

fair enough tbh i understand it isnt "real" it was more to get the point across that there are amazing thigs in space and you dont really get that effect in eve. would be nice to have more than just set backgrounds

It's very real. I would consider it perfectly understandable that Space pilots would rather use false color multispectrum images to "see" the universe instead of just one spectrum at a time.
Granted by that argument it's the ships that aren't the right color

Those are a few pretty pictures. FOr the most part space is just kind of there. Black speckeled with some white dots, maybe a rock here or there.
As stated previoulsy, most of those hubble photos are flase color images, if you saw most of that stuff in person, it would look pretty bland, like the cloud of dust that it is. In addition, those clouds of dust don't usually inhabit systems, because the star, and any planets that might be orbiting said star, would pull all of the dust in.
At the Moment, EvE space is a bit TOO colorful. Maybe instead of adding more unrealistig clouds, the devs should make the planets less nodescript and the stars different colors

One of the things CCP talked about during fanfest was an overhaul of the particle system used in EVE. The example given was the NOS effects. But the implication was that the same system would be used to create extensive asteroid fields and planetary rings you can fly through. As such, I expect some of this to filter through to the game in due time.
Overall though, I would welcome a more subdued light spectacle in the game. Some of the 'clouds' in missions are simply overpowering and looking at them makes using the UI more difficult than need be. -- Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? |

Space doesn't look anything like the hubble photos. In reality, it's a million times more boring than it is in game.
Iw ould be much happier if it was almost completely black, with just a few pinpoints representing stars here and there.
These multi-colored psychedelic backgrounds we have now just make it look like a children's game, imo. |

Edited by: Arthur Frayn on 10/01/2009 15:27:50 Once upon a time at the release of Revelations, you could actually see all the stars in the Eve galaxy that you can jump to from your normal viewpoint in space, and clicking on the map would cause a zoomout which would bring them into focus. But that seems to have been removed.
What would be nice is to have the background depict the spiral arms of new eden, in the same way you can look up into the night sky out in the country and see our galaxy. This background could depict a different angle of the galaxy depending on what system you were in; being out in deep 0.0 could depict the whole galaxy edge-on in all its glory, while being close to the center could fill the background with gas and stars. |

It's true than when I look at the sky on a wonderful starry night, all I'm thinking is oh my god! space is so boring! ... not. I don't think going full dullness is the way to render the grandeur of space on our meager computer screens. If it needs a little artistic help, some colour here and there to make it more spectacular I don't see the problem with it. |

but surley some systems should be boring and some shouldnt, the idea that ships camrea bots could only see part of the light spectrum is a moot point tbh, although i do admit all those psycadelic colors all the time would get annoying but diversity ppl cummon.
my point is wevve all been looking at the same systems for ages now make them all look slightly different, and make some the centre of a massive spacial phenomenon. i think it would be good fun. it would be great to see the new particle effects worked into the clouds and stuff tho, that idea gets thumbs up from me.

Hey Arbiter
We were hoping to get new planets and nebulas in for Apocrypha, but have limited resources and essentially had to choose between new renovated visual effects for turrets, modules, explosions, warp etc or new planets and nebulas. We chose effects because we felt that they were more important since the game is very much about blowing people up, webbing them, podding them etc. I am sure there are people who feel differently and I respect that. We are dying for new planets ourselves, it's just a question in what order we renovate. It's either doing it piece by piece or coming out with one large expansion much further down the road with everything in it.
Anyway, we have people working on this, but I can't tell you exactly when we'll have something available. The thing is we don't want to make new planets and nebulas just to make new planets and nebulas. They have to look great, and that takes time, effort, iteration and a lot of tuning. And knowing our artists, I can assure you, they want their time for their tuning. And every time they've gotten that, the results have been awesome, and I'm sure they will be this time as well.

However... those backgrounds are what we see all of the time, and are what new players see all of the time.
So please please please PLEASE consider releasing them when they are done and NOT with an expansion. PLEASE? pretty please? Having to wait until Christmas, 2 years after trinity, would be a painful experience. On the other hand if you have a patch just for the backgrounds, that would be awesome.
p.s.(with more time please consider making nebulas have fixed posistions in the eve universe. So as yo warp towards jita which is in a blue nebula, you can see that nebula getting bigger and bigger in the background.

Yeah just a little mini expansion hot fix ala Apocrypha 1.12. No need to wait for a future patch if its done before then.

That's exactly the system being developed. Large stellar bodies all around the known universe, creating a landscape through which you travel. So you can really be in the "Shoulder of Orion" etc. I hope we can get it out this summer. As things look today, it looks probable. |

Now *that* I can get excited about. I do sooooo much travelling in this game, eventually being able to recognise where you are headed from the surroundings would kick major ass. |

I am quite sure they are going to update planets before they update planetary interaction :P
quick question will we be finally be able to go though a real ice/rock/gas fields of planet rings? because they are very unrealistic when you get very close to them. |

we want to do this, it's on our backlog but this is more than just a graphical change. we'd need to take a whole new look at mining. you'd have to able to mine these rocks, but if they surround a planet or a sun, like the Kupier belt, then it's a lot of rocks. The DB couldn't handle each of them being an entry in a table. It's solvable, but you need to redesign seeding and mining and rathunting for them. Also, should we then drop existing belts, or should they be complimentary? It's a lot of issues. We're thinking about them, but there's no team working on solving this at this very moment. |

Wow! Tentative or not - it's encouraging to see that it might be ready by summer - I sure hope so!
Effects are nice, and it will be awesome to have them in Apocrypha, but backgrounds, nebulae, planets, etc. are seen by everyone, everywhere, virtually all the time with the exception of spinning, so it's nice to know they could be renovated this year, and before Christmas, too.
