Originally by: CCP t0rfifrans we want to do this, it's on our backlog but this is more than just a graphical change. we'd need to take a whole new look at mining. you'd have to able to mine these rocks, but if they surround a planet or a sun, like the Kupier belt, then it's a lot of rocks. The DB couldn't handle each of them being an entry in a table. It's solvable, but you need to redesign seeding and mining and rathunting for them. Also, should we then drop existing belts, or should they be complimentary? It's a lot of issues. We're thinking about them, but there's no team working on solving this at this very moment.
This makes me sad. I thought a mining overhaul was in the build half a year ago and now you say there isn't even a team working on it. |

Edited by: Antimony Noske on 10/01/2009 21:08:50 I'd like to see realistically sized planets, moons, stars, etc. That also perform actual orbits. Elliptical and non-elliptical.
Binary systems, ternary, quaternary or more would be really, really awesome.
Moons that are more like captured asteroids - non spherical, smaller. Imagine a moon that's 150 km's long, 80km's wide, with a cloud of smaller mine-able asteroids around it. You could moon mine while you 'roid mine. [yo dawg] |

But that seems to have been removed.
Yeah, more's the pity. I liked that feature as well. |

As a professional programmer, I can just say: Where there's a will, there's a way. It may take some rethinking about things, but reinventing the wheel every now-and-then can be a good thing if it paves the way and makes it easier to invent the racecar... |

That's exactly the system being developed. Large stellar bodies all around the known universe, creating a landscape through which you travel. So you can really be in the "Shoulder of Orion" etc. I hope we can get it out this summer. As things look today, it looks probable.
Woot!
Now that sounds really cool. |

It's in the backlog, but not in a sprint and not in the next release. For definition of backlog, see SCRUM ( development ) definition on Wikipedia. We use SCRUM extensively for our development, and it works great btw. |

Can I sneak in an off-topic request for an audio overhaul?
Situational awareness through audio prompts would be the icing on the cake.

:)
I'm really glad to hear this, I've been in school for art for too long, wishing I could go work at ccp JUST to work on making the eve universe a real universe, and not just system after system. But I'm at least 3 years away from getting a real industry job instead of all of my current internships inbetween classes.
OH well I guess I can go make another space game on my own when I graduate, eve will most likely not need any more artist in 3 years. |

Completely disagree with op. No more clown space, I want black space with a star field and thats it. Eve is a dark cold universe but some of the systems look like a clown barfed his starburst all over the place. |

Now if we were to get real about this...
This is what the Cassini craft recently saw on a fly-by of Saturn's rings. Prometheus spins past as Cassini orbits Saturn. The Cassini spacecraft sees this view of Saturn's rings twice per orbit. |

Though it has been requested that there be visible binaries, going on 6 years now with that.
Some other notes concerning EVE space: 1|2
As for the colorful phenomena around the EVE universe, the majority of systems in a galaxy are within densely populated nebulae forming regions. Long lost Earth is located within a very sparsely populated region of its galaxy, whereas the known regions of space in EVE are considerably closer to the galactic core. Thus more nebulae close to the stars in EVE.

Yes, every system in EVE is, technically, binary.
~1/3 to 1/2 of all known star systems are binary. |

Me, not every system should be an epic light show. And we'd apprieciate those light shows more if they were rare.

I hope you don't have to stand up for the whole meeting! They tried that at my work (another game company), and we refused after the first few meetings. The bloviators went on just as long, except we had to stand there bored instead of being able to relax comfortably in our Aeron chairs.
Just say no to rigid, silly rules!
As to the subject at hand, I'm really excited to hear about the changes you're working on for this summer. I'd rather have those first, than new effects, since the effects don't interfere with gameplay like the overly bright nebulae we have now. Also, they do get boring after awhile, and I've often wished that I could just have some plain space to look at for most systems.

I would like the option for BLACK space with no nebula please.
Thank you.
The fancy "nebula getting bigger as you get closer to a consellation's proximity" sounds okay, but really, black space and no poxy nebula would be just fine and dandy. It would take probably two minutes of coding, too. (There was even a bug once which produced this effect, which CCP sadly fixed.) Thanks CCP. |

this is just what the doctor orderd, sounds great, im glad that the devs have been taking an interest in this and are spending the time on it to make it a good finished product. it seems that eve is in for a big overhaul in the sense of in space mechanics and such. interactive planets and the new particle physics talked about in fanfest are high on my omfg list, to me it sounds like the changes will be for the better.
however wont most of the technology being used for eg the new nos effects be transferable too things like gas clouds and such, |
