So, 10 days into 2009, no dev blogs since the 11th of December last year, 1 day shy of a month.
Where'd the Monday morning dev blogs go to? Where's the blog info on the March 10 expansion? Come on guys, I take a year break from EVE and the most open and transparent development team in MMOs today just goes and clams up like the best dev from WoW.
Even before December, you guys were getting very sparse with the blogs. Hop to it! |

Meh, I gave up checking the player "news" centre a long time ago. When I started playing eve I used to like the player news bit at the bottom. Then I realised it will frequently go weeks without change. Get used to it I guess.
There is no news. |

Edited by: Ticondrius on 10/01/2009 12:15:27 In the space of 11 Dec to 10 Jan last year, there were *5* blogs. Don't tell me something isn't up.
Also, over 2007, the average blogs per month was around 8. 2008 was around 4. |

Yes, something's up. They hate you. Personally. They won't write any more devblogs until you give me all your stuff and quit eve forever.
Considering 2009 is almost over (pnly 11 months and a few days left) you are right in that they most likely won't write a devblog this year anymore no matter whether you quit or not.

My prediction: Februari to March will be jammed full of blogs. After the expansion, 1 or 2 months of silence and when we're nearing winter expansion/fan fest/etc, blogs pick up again.

as we've all seen before, dev blogs cause cause an unwelcome response in the client base. BUT even if devs posted news having ANYthing to do with eve, i think we would feel less alienated. hell throw up pics from the CCP xmas party or something, or of the tour area of the facility... ideas for next tournys... or even about an Eve novel., who cares. just communicate with us (i sound like a clongy girlfriend... ewww) _________________________________________________________ Only once you've lost everything, are you free to do anything. Well they seem to have settled into a pattern since Trinity of only blogging immediately before expansions to cover the major new features or nerfs.
To be honest I think they effectively decided to stop blogging when the carrier-nerf blog was published and got such a hysterical reaction.

As someone who is actually currently working on a devblog perhaps I can throw some light onto the matter. A devblog is a lot more than one person sitting down and spewing out a couple of paragraphs about work that has gone on. Most of us who are writing them (and yes, there are more of us writing them in the run-up for Apocrypha) tend to take a bit more time because we do the following:
1. Refine the language to try and cut out ambiguous statements as much as possible. Mainly to cut down on wild speculation, word twisting and omg-rabble-rabble-wtf panic attacks as much as possible. For me this means I write something and then let it sit for a day and then re-read it while getting two or three other people to also go through it with fine-toothed combs. You may disagree about the neccessity of this process but experience has shown us time and time again that it is needed.
2. Show what you have written to the people who are actually implementing the features and get feedback. Doesn't help to claim we're doing something in a certain way when in fact that got changed and is now wildly different. Yes, the rate at which we develop would mean that religiously sticking to this rule would mean we never publish, but still you want to be as accurate as possible. And who knows, while you were writing your dev blog the programmers may have finished the key component and you'll be able to put up a screenshot of something awesome. Never hurts to check.
3. Get feedback from Marketing and PR. At this point many of you are no doubt rolling your eyes but the simple truth is that our Marketing and PR people work long and hard at getting press exposure for EVE with many different media outlets. Part of that process may involve promising exclusive coverage for some new feature. If some dev then goes ahead and broadbands the details ahead of time this puts a bit of strain on the relationship between us and the press, which can result in EVE getting less coverage. Dev blogs are public news pieces and we have to treat them just as carefully as any other media piece.
That's just the top three. There's plenty of other to-ing and fro-ing involved in producing this sort of news piece which can delay publication or require re-writes. And of course there's all the other things we need to get done in an average working day. So while we do want to produce dev blogs, the process is a bit more involved than just hammering away at a keyboard for an hour and hitting 'upload'.

This together with all marketing considerations were the death to good DevBlogs. Some time ago DevBlogs were a good tool for getting info and giving feedback (before everything is set into stone). Now DevBlogs are only another marketing tool and it¦s normally better to search 3rd-party sites instead of waiting for a DevBlog. |

In all honesty, i think we need devblogs with shinys to complement the info-heavy ones we have now
Let's say a nice render of what one of the modelers are working on together with a small comment, perhaps about what was hard about making it
A sample of the interface beeing reworked with a few comments on new fetures that might potentialy be implemented, but again nothing above 2-3 sentences
A picture of random devs outside/inside fishtank with accesories that could be conciderd awsome
Simple stuff like that would be awsome |

It isn't comparable. 11 Dec 2007 was shortly after the release of Trinity on 5 Dec 2007. This year we released Quantum Rise a month earlier, on 11 Nov 2008, and if we look at the month after that date we find *8* blogs. |

The reason *I* see whines is because the dev blogs often relate to issues that (by my daily lurkage) do not address many issues that the CSM has passed on, such as refining the missile nerf, the POS flogging, sov issues, lowsec woes, stealth bomber and bomb worthlessness, skill training queues, falcons, minnie caps, etc.
But hey we'll get wormholes and the ability to play space flutes soon.
