The real question is, what's to stop your real life banker from running with your money? By the time the investigation is concluded he will be long gone out of the country, maybe somewhere out at sea where nobody can track him.
Whereas in eve, worst case scenario you lose a bit of play cash and have to shoot a few more rats to get it back.

Report it. It is probably farmer ISK. Don't try to launder it, if you try that then you likely will get banned.
They can't ban you for receiving tainted ISK (since anyone can send anyone else ISK without consent) but they can remove it (thus whacking your wallet into negative numbers if you spent it), and they can ban you if you willfully try to launder it.
That said, 800M isn't really all that much these days. There are transactions into the tens of billions all the time, and as I recall, over 2 TRILLION in isk that moves daily in the EVE economy. But yeah, that seems a LOT to a new player, I remember when I started with an Ibis, a chunk of trit, and a dream and the first million I got seemed to be a lot :)
As a new player you should be working on getting yourself started on the path of making ISK, be it industry, mining, or mission running. Missioning is probably the quickest and easiest, and in your first week you should be able to graduate into T1 cruisers and L2/L3 missions.

If its legit iskies Id say your best option at this point is
200mil= +3 and +4 implants to help speed training.
200mil= Begin investing in long term investments such as the mineral market or component markets. If you would like some advice in this area eve-mail me.
100mil= Skillbook investment. Buy cruiser/battlecruiser, weapon books, defense books and learning books. Buy a library- you will need to buy these eventually and if all else goes wrong its still a decent investment.
50-100mil= Read through the forums and buy a whole bunch of t1 cruisers/frigs with t1 fittings. Understand that these will simply be throw away ships where you can LEARN to PVP. Try stopping by Faction Warfare sites in a month or so and give it a try out.
100mil= Rainy day fund.
50mil= Decent Cruiser/BC for mission running- grind to L4 missions to get a feel of the pve side of eve while your skills tick over.
50mil= take a shot in market pvp with t1 "meta-level" buy and sell orders. Learn the trading game.

Thread title says moral dilemma, yet all the talk is about game rules and fear of punishment, which have little to do with morals or ethics.
The only in game moral question is, if the isk was legit, and was given by mistake, should you give it back? The rest is just game rules.
But if Amarr'd is OP's alt then it seems CCP decided the question for you.

This is EVE, there are certain things that while immoral out of game are perfectly fine in game. The ingame rule is that if someone gives you isk it's yours. If they wanted something in exchange they really should have setup a contract. The thing here is that you want to make sure the isk isn't RMT tainted since CCP has a policy of wiping that isk away. But you're already covering that aspect of it. If that clears you're left of course with the moral dilemma of what to do.
From the in-game lore point of view you'd be fine in keeping it. Someone else made a mistake to your profit. EVE is portrayed as a very dark and cut-throat universe. One gets the impressions that morals are something best left behind with your pre-capsuler life. So you're fine from the roleplay point of view (unless of course you're trying to roleplay a moral pilot in an immoral universe).
From a personal point of view - if it clears ccp you may want to find out from the person who sent the isk what sort of a mistake it was and then make a decision, but from an in-game fiction point of view you're covered so it's up to your personal morals at that point.

I agree with Qui Shon. Sounded like the OP was asking whether he should give the isk back or not. After all, he does know who gave it to him according to his own logs.
From the posts in this thread, people are saying, 'Hell no. Keep it.' I guess we know that most of them, if they saw someone drop $50, would run up behind the person, take the cash, and never feel bad about it. Afterall, its the persons own fault for not hanging onto their money better right?
Does that sound like someone with morals?
The honorable and moral thing to do would be to eve-mail the person in game to find out if it was a mistake. You have to come over the 'greed factor' inside yourself to do this. Just like the honorable and moral thing to do would be to pick up the $50, tap the person on the shoulder, and say, 'You dropped this'.
You may find that the isk is legit, the person is quiting eve and handing out isk to random noobies. I'd do it if I ever decided to leave Eve for good.
Most people would say I am crazy for thinking this way. Its really up to you.
Just answer a simple question and you will have your answer on what to do.
What kind of person are you?

800M isn't that much ISK. Eve for a noob.
I feel uncomfortable with under 3B.
I mean you could train up BS and fly a Faction battleship pretty quick.
Once its verified legit... do that and keep that ship to run missions whenever you get low.

Don't spend any of that ISK 'til your GM query gets answered.
If it's legit, then good for you.
If it's not legit (and you've spent it), you could end up with a negative Wallet. With a negative Wallet, you can't sell stuff (broker fees, taxes, escrows, etc all need be paid in advance) and obviously you can't buy stuff. You can't even set sell Contracts (10k minimum)
That leaves a young newb pilot with no option, aside from 'ratting their way out of the hole... in a frigate... chasing bounties of 5k to 10k ISK... in heavily populated starter systems. It ain't a good future.
So 'til it gets resolved, treat that ISK like it ain't there.
Quote: Then again, was it maybe just a nice person that saw I was new and sent it to me?
Maybe... but doubt it. Good for you, if it's your lucky payday, though.

No, its just if you do PvP and like to spend ISK on the best you can fly. And for a noob you can fly faction and run Meta 4 still pretty fast. You could blow 800 million ISK pretty quickly.
I dunno. I made oodles of ISK from 6 months on. A million ISK was only a lot in the first week when I was buying Dessies and thought they were the coolest ships ever.
And my income doesn't even compare to many of the players in the Tech 2 game that I know. I know dedicated PvPers that make more then me with thier industry alts.
Once its verified legit, invest it in something that will make more ISK. Like a good mission ship or finding another corp that will put a return on that ISK.

Congrats. Just remember the rule of thumb, train for modules before the ship. And never buy something on the Wow factor alone.
Do research into ships specialities and try if possable to get peoples opinions on the ships you think you are going for

Yeah, I haven't spent an ISK of it. I just used the ISK I had before to outfit and nice frig for running missions and started training my learning skills. Someone told me to look at EVEMON or EFT (one of those) and build a plan so I know what I'm going for.
Think I'm going to stick with my frig or a destroyer as long as I can and try to figure out a way to invest the ISK and make some more money. |

What a windfall. I'm betting someone quit and decided to actually give you their stuff.
Paddy Paddy nnnwhatever actually gave you the best advice in this thread. Put most of it in Eve Bank right now, and learn to trade with about 100-200m. Once you learn this, the lump sum you have will basically make you self sufficient for the rest of your (hopefully long) Eve career. You will be able to PVP all you want. Don't blow it on shinys.
Most of all, don't trust anyone with it and triple check any contracts you may want to accept. |

Dont waste any of it...
The biggist mistake you can make is spending it and not realizing that its finite. Dont do anything you wouldnt normally do with a lower amount of money... And always keep a float. Dont let yourself get too low, always keep some money in your balance. While this means that money is effectively 'useless', its damn helpful if you lose your (mission) BS to lag or something stupid and you need to replace it. I would recommend 100m for this, as that will buy a tier 1 bs and fittings, although i try to keep about 200m myself. |
