I know im gonna get flamed for this, but i honestly dont care anymore.
There used to be a time when players dreamt about joining special corp's in eve, but for the most part those days are now gone. No longer are corps known for their pvp ability, but their ability to post crap on the forums, and one of the reasons for this is the fact that small scale combat is for the most part becoming a thing of the past.
Carebears complain about pirates in low sec even if its pretty much close to impossible to catch anyone there anymore, the high sec and low sec pvp'ers actually most of the time get told most of the time to move to 0,0 were the real pvp is. I hate to inform you guys, but pvp is actually a lot more then 700 vs 300 and that sort of fights.
So as much as i hate to admit it, some sort of battlegrounds is actually becoming more and more needed. we need a place were we can fight an equal force, were there will be no docking game, no warp to 0. We need a place were the best will win, a place were its no longer a numbers game. A lot of pvp'ers want a place were its all about the skills again, were corperations can make a name for themself as the top pvp'ers without having to be in laggy battles with 1k ppl.
And before you say, this will never happen cause this isnt what eve is about, please remember that the way eve is now is not what eve was when it first started, like everything else it changes, sometimes for the better, sometime for the worse. all im asking is that for those few of us that miss the days of small scale pvp once again get a place in eve

Edited by: Dirk Magnum on 13/01/2009 10:44:05 As if a controlled battleground setting at all resembles even old school small group PvP. I mean, every Alliance Tourney people ***** about how most of the fights don't actually simulate the type of in-game engagements experienced PvPers are familiar with. I seriously doubt any corp known for being able to participate efficiently in battleground engagements would every truly be respected amongst the PvP community, unless they showed similar skill in open space.
If you want some kind of watered-down pseudo-battleground fight setting just steal from any of the jet cans clogging the outside of major trade stations. You can get a fight in Amarr at any time 23/7 outside the middle station on the list.
All that being said, I don't actually oppose the creation of a combat arena, as long as it costs ISK to use and gives no rewards apart from what the individual player takes away from it in experience and blue flashy fun. |

Dear OP, I feel your pain and want you to know that it is shared with a lot of Eve players.
But small scale pvp in a controlled, fair environment is NOT what Eve advertises, it's "epic fleet battles" and it should stay like that!
Anything else can only work if it's organized by the community, battlegrounds as a game mechanic would imo break eve.
So get out there and make things happen, it sure helps more than whining on the forums. |

Edited by: Marcus Xavier on 13/01/2009 11:52:07 Nothing is stopping you from creating a "battleground" arena within your alliance. First, find a system that no one really wants and declare it a "battleground". Second, negotiate rules of engagement that everyone accepts when entering the system. If necessary, assign a corp or two to act as the battleground police.
If you expand it beyond your alliance, then you need to declare the system to be neutral territory and only "battleground" rules of engagement apply. If folks step out of line, then the battleground police will spank them. If you find it difficult to create or manage the battleground, head over to the "Features" forum and post your suggestions for CCP to create the tools that you need to manage the battleground. |

We already have battlegrounds in the Faction War systems. Granted, the numbers can be skewed, but so could they in Daoc. |

epic fleet fights will still happen with or without battlegrounds for small scale pvp.
those massive fights happens cause someone wants a new region or a new moon, and as long as ppl can make isk, thats what major alliances will fight over.
battlegrounds would however be very good for those small corps that does not want to be part of massive fights, or for those tired of for the x number of time getting hot dropped in what would otherwise have been a fair fight.

I dont know where you go, but I've had plenty of fights 10 on 10, 30 on 30 , all the way up to 400+
Combat in Eve is about situational awareness, and about good FC's adapating. We've already got Battlegrounds, its called the alliance tournament, go sign up.

1000% agree on the op, i have been involved in the huge 0.0 fights for all my EvE time and i really miss a chance for some small scale balanced PvP, whenever i go roam my killers will always be a 100 man gatecamp.
TBH why not add a kind of guildwars tournament style arena, where you can sign up in a station with a ship, choose the amount of people involved(could be detected automaticly through gang size) and then it would find an opponent with the same ship type or something.
I would LOVE to dock up in Jita with a blasterthron, open a window and press a button, wait 5 minutes and then getting teleported into an "arena" fighting against another Battleship. Really, i can't see the problem, people will still lose their ship, and the reward could simply be the chance to loot the victim and get that damn killmail.
My friend joined eve 20 days ago, he has been missioning and tbh thats all he can do, people say that EvE is a PvP game, yet the noobs cant get any unless they're ready to leave empire and go to 0.0, because low sec sure isn't going to give them any fights. (who the hell can't beat a frigate or T1 cruiser, seriously)
And honestly i don't think it would ruin the EvE Concept, the arena is optional, and honestly it's just a way to have fun, maybe add the ability to put a "bet" on the fight, agreed by the other participant.
If you disagree i would love to hear why this would be game breaking? I can honestly only see positive things with this idea, especially since EvE will hit the stores again soon, and quick PvP would surely be attractive to a wide variety of players.

I think what we want is an alternative...
I hardly doubt a tournament system will mean "making eve into other MMO's", EvE is already using a ****ton of features that other MMO's have, if it works why not use it right?
Maybe you should try to be a bit more constructive and tell us why tournaments/battlegrounds (call it whatever you want) are bad? |
